No problem, russtcb and you're welcome.

Buzz, I'm glad you downloaded the tracks. There Was A Time...for me, that song does it the least for me.  I find Axl's verse melody to be not as strong as the other 8 tracks.  Still like all the tracks though, but I liked 'em even before I mastered 'em. The mastering just makes it all rock more, which is a good thing.

The human voice usually becomes fully mature after age 28 (see http://web.ku.edu/~cmed/private/federarticle.html).

As we age, our voices can and do change, but singers who take care of their voices properly generally do not lose their upper range. What changes is the ability to sing lower and fuller. Our median range can drop a note or two, but our ability to reach that upper range doesn't change. Proper diet and vocal exercise better ensures that our best singers retain their vocal instruments. Smoking, drug abuse or singing beyond the natural range for too many years is often the culprit of the apparent loss of range in some of our aging rock stars.

A really great place to read about these kind of topics is the Associated Board Of The Royal Schools Of Music (http://forums.abrsm.org)

Thanks for your kind words and you're welcome!  Haha...yeah, really though...for me, it was about making it personally enjoyable for my ears to listen to so that I could make a fair judgment of the material.

Super glad there are folks out there enjoying it...the material is worth enjoying...for sure.

Yeah...they sound pretty damn good like this i must say. Don't supose you've ever thought of doing "Catcher in the Rye" wink wink

I actually have a fairly clean version of that track...the vocals are just too dang low in the mix, though...it was a rough mix...not even close to the mix of the other 9 tracks.

Hey J,

Can I ask a question? How were you able to master the tracks without having the original source files? Like you made these from an Mp3 or something right? I would have thought you'd need to have the original protools files to be able to bring things up and down properly in the mix and isolate the parts.

NB: I totally believe this is your work, so i'm not at all implying you didn't do it, or giving you a hard time or anything like that. I'm just a guitarist and thus ignorant of the world of recording/mastering enginers and that kind of thing..(ui just play my part and go home..then they do their magic LOL) .and trying to get my head around how it it all works smile

Mastering is always done from a completed mix...I converted the mp3s to wav and then went to town.

I really don't get the people out there posting about how bad this material is.

1. If it ain't your cup o' tea, go drink your own cup, no reason to piss in everyone else's.
2. By even the second listen of the entire nine songs, it is clear that the material is solid. The writing is fantastic and the performances are completely first rate.

Gimme a break...we got morons running around screamin' about how Axl's lost his high range. Anyone who thinks the recorded vocals on these nine songs point to any loss of vocal ability on Axl's part isn't listening with their ears.

Be bitter about the years lost all you want...there are some of us who are happy to hear this new material and remain hopeful that it may just be properly released someday.

buzz,

The looking for attention comment wasn't directed at you...it was directed at me and it wasn't even a direct insult...it was a "well, I guess he could be doing it to get attention" kinda thing...it was a statement of possibility.

The entire thing you're missing here, the thing you're not understanding or even using your mind to consider is how it is I happened upon this lovely little website.

The mastering work I did on these songs, I did for myself. I then shared that work with my brother...he then convinced me to share that work with the general online community, because the mastering made such an enormous difference. You see, buzzy, in the initial write ups of these leaks, Antiquiet and major news outlets were claiming the mp3 files were fully mastered tracks. However, a quick listen of the Antiquiet mp3 files and a simple viewing of the actual wav forms within those mp3 files made it clear to me that the tracks had never been mastered. I don't like quiet, unmastered, low quality mp3 files on my iPod, so I did a bunch of work to greatly enhance the sonics of the files...that is to say, make them okay to my personal standards.

I first posted about what I had done to the files on the Metal Sludge gossip board, as well as another message board that I go to at times called the Heart Of Metal. One of the Metal Sludgers told me about the RockConfidential.com site. I emailed the guy who runs that site and he quickly emailed me back to request the files. He downloaded the entire zip file I had uploaded to my own server space and re-uploaded it to his own server space and then blogged about it. If you'd like, I can forward you those emails...tags and all.

Now...how did I hear about this site?

Simple...James Lofton contacted me through my mastering page which is a simple myspace page (myspace.com/steinhausmastering).  James wrote me to thank me for the work on the files. He was appreciative you see, because he had actually heard the work. I checked out his myspace page, which then led to the discovery of this website. I exchanged a few myspace messages with him and here we are today.

See...it's actually quite simple and straightforward.  There are no shenanigans being played on you, no wool being pulled over your eyes.

I see youve named it "If the war (end today)"..     ?

Yeah, got the title from Metal Sludge.  I've since changed it on my iPod it to "If The World" after seeing the set list.  Didn't worry 'bout changing it in the actual zip file, cuz I don't feel like re-uploading the dang thing.

People will call them what they want and we could see a million set lists and if the album ever comes out, we may just be surprised to find out what the titles are then.

Plus, it is commonplace for bands to abbreviate or use partial song titles for their set lists.  I know my own bands have always done that sort of thing and every band I've toured with has as well.
