#991 Re: Guns N' Roses » The Next Chapter or the Grand Finale? » 911 weeks ago

Buckethead took the songs (and more importantly the potential) to a much higher level and made GNR exciting.  Without him it's Axl and some musicians, not that they aren't a good band but damn BH made them something special.  If the whole thing just doesn't simply implode once and for all (which I fear may be the case) I'm still hoping against hope that we haven't seen the last of Buckethead with Axl again.

It's time for change.  Let's hope that whoever wins this next election will FINALLY take this issue seriously and not just "promise the moon" to get votes.  We are L A S T in this category.  How much more of a wakeup call do we need?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - France, Japan and Australia rated best and the United States worst in new rankings focusing on preventable deaths due to treatable conditions in 19 leading industrialized nations, researchers said on Tuesday.

If the U.S. health care system performed as well as those of those top three countries, there would be 101,000 fewer deaths in the United States per year, according to researchers writing in the journal Health Affairs.

Researchers Ellen Nolte and Martin McKee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine tracked deaths that they deemed could have been prevented by access to timely and effective health care, and ranked nations on how they did.

They called such deaths an important way to gauge the performance of a country's health care system.

Nolte said the large number of Americans who lack any type of health insurance -- about 47 million people in a country of about 300 million, according to U.S. government estimates -- probably was a key factor in the poor showing of the United States compared to other industrialized nations in the study.

"I wouldn't say it (the last-place ranking) is a condemnation, because I think health care in the U.S. is pretty good if you have access. But if you don't, I think that's the main problem, isn't it?" Nolte said in a telephone interview.

In establishing their rankings, the researchers considered deaths before age 75 from numerous causes, including heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, certain bacterial infections and complications of common surgical procedures.

Such deaths accounted for 23 percent of overall deaths in men and 32 percent of deaths in women, the researchers said.

France did best -- with 64.8 deaths deemed preventable by timely and effective health care per 100,000 people, in the study period of 2002 and 2003. Japan had 71.2 and Australia had 71.3 such deaths per 100,000 people. The United States had 109.7 such deaths per 100,000 people, the researchers said.

After the top three, Spain was fourth best, followed in order by Italy, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Greece, Austria, Germany, Finland, New Zealand, Denmark, Britain, Ireland and Portugal, with the United States last.

PREVIOUS RANKINGS

The researchers compared these rankings with rankings for the same 19 countries covering the period of 1997 and 1998. France and Japan also were first and second in those rankings, while the United States was 15th, meaning it fell four places in the latest rankings.

All the countries made progress in reducing preventable deaths from these earlier rankings, the researchers said. These types of deaths dropped by an average of 16 percent for the nations in the study, but the U.S. decline was only 4 percent.

The research was backed by the Commonwealth Fund, a private New York-based health policy foundation.

"It is startling to see the U.S. falling even farther behind on this crucial indicator of health system performance," Commonwealth Fund Senior Vice President Cathy Schoen said.

"The fact that other countries are reducing these preventable deaths more rapidly, yet spending far less, indicates that policy, goals and efforts to improve health systems make a difference," Schoen added in a statement.

Sorry to hear about your friend's pain and final choice.  I hope all those that he left behind will find peace and remember the better days they shared with him.

I think its more a cultural thing.

While i agree "It don't really matter" or "it do not really matter" is bad grammer....that kind of incorrect usage is quite common in English in some communities.

You are probably correct on this one (hoping that my other theory about James' idea is wrong) monkeychow.  CD is a straight up rocker with a bit of grunge influence thrown in for good measure.  These type of songs usually have a very raw and rebellious feel to them.  From the beginning bad grammar has been used in rock songs as a sort of rebellion and to give it a raw, unbound type of feel.

I love this song and everyone knows how I feel about it, but there's something about this song that's always bothered me.

"It don't really matter".  It do not really matter. That doesn't make sense. This song is at least seven years old, so its obviously intentional(or it would've been fixed). But why? I have always thought the song was about his online fans and about the possibility of the album never coming out, so is this error a jab at how internet geeks are quick to point out grammar/punctuation errors?

The bolded part is a bit scary when you think about it.  When you first said this a few years back my guess is most people didn't "read that much into it", but now given the fact we STILL have no album this theory isn't as funny any longer! sad

Think about the whole first stanza:

It don't really matter
Gonna find out for yourself
No, it don't really matter
Gonna leave this thing to
Somebody else

"It don't really matter, Gonna find out for yourself" ... ouch, that could be a nasty way of saying "It's not coming out, get over it.  Keep on debating, believing, whatever...you'll find out for yourselves."
"Gonna leave this thing to somebody else"...could be seen as "you guys talk about it all you want, YOU deal with it".

Of course it's a stretch, but this idea (along with the ongoing-for-years idea that CD never really existed in the first place) gains momentum with more and more time passing and STILL no album.  Think of it this way...would you have believed EIGHT years ago we would still be wondering when the album is coming?   I wouldn't have.

Excellent reply.  That is some great information Q and it is well received.  I will check some of this stuff out for sure.

#998 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » LA Guns thread » 912 weeks ago

This thread has reminded me of how much I liked L.A. Guns once I got turned on to them.  Cocked and Loaded was the one that won me over, in particular Never Enough/Malaria and The Ballad of Jayne.  Hollywood Vampires was decent but I preferred Vicious Circle.  I really liked Long Time Dead/Chasing the Dragon/Killing Machine and Crystal Eyes off that one.  That was the last I heard of them.  Any suggestions for post Viscious Circle to reintroduce a one-time fan?

#999 Re: The Sunset Strip » Dave Grohl To Drum On Led Zeppelin Reunion Tour? » 912 weeks ago

Yeah, I like Grohol but Jason makes a helluva lot more sense.  Ten years ago would have been a better time for them to do this (like Lofton is saying) but I'm not sure it's too late.  Led Zeppelin will smack ANYBODY else who tours this year...period.  In my opinion Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band of all time, I say this without hesitation.

About the Giants-Bucs game, that Giants drive to start the 4th quarter was a killer. Up by 10 already, and they took 8 minutes off the clock and then scored a TD. That was huge. If they can play like that next week, they'll upset Dallas.

That would be great.  Anybody but Dallas!
