I like this song a bit better than the last one. Better pacing.

Idle thought: Izzy should get Tommy Stinson on bass. A Stinson/Izzy writing combo would be awesome, their styles would complement each other really well.

These songs would benefit by Tommy's vocals too.

The label will want to maximize their profits on the CD II material however they can.

I'd wager that means having Slash play on it and some producer they like producing it. They've been wanting to do that since the early 2000s. Of course, Axl will never do that. But even if Slash re-records Buckethead's or Finck's parts, it won't negate the issues that CD had when it went to market. It will likely still be over-produced, lacking in spontaneity, and feel a bit stale as a result. I suppose they could take it back to formula and have the whole band re-record it but I doubt that.

I do think that those criticisms will matter less, I know plenty of open-minded casual fans who love CD and accept it as GNR canon with no qualms largely because they didn't follow the 2002 band or listen to the leaks. Axl will be the man behind the curtain assuming nothing leaks ahead of time this time around and the good will with most fans and the media will help ensure whatever is released next gets good reviews.

That said, I think the root problem is: "What does Guns N' Roses sound like"? It's been a problem since the Illusions records so much so that it broke up the band. On Chinese it was just as much of an issue. You had the late 1990s Robin Finck songs and you had the early 00s Buckethead songs. Same issue, different band.

I also think that the only way we hear the early new GNR sessions is if Axl dies and even then, probably without vocals, which is a damn shame.

The whole thing is a catch 22 and as I mentioned before, the fans lose again.

Yeah, no argument from me. I listen to the 2002 soundboards more than I listen to the finished version.

I never loved CITR but it's a damn shame what they did to that one. A mess.

Do you mean "original" as in track listing or band performance?

I'm speculating but I think CD was what the 2001-2002 tour was. Very electronica driven. Half new sound of hard rock, electrofunk, and hip hop beats like "Silkworms", "Shackler's Revenge", and "Oh My God" and half classic GN'R blues driven "IRS", "TWAT", and "Catcher". Bait the hook with nostalgia and lead the fish towards uncharted waters.

I mean in every interview in those early days he / the journalists mentioned the same songs.

I cant wait to finally hear some of this other Chinese material to see what he was holding back. I am still in shock that they didn't have a monster single on CD. Did the sessions lack one entirely or did Axl just hold it back and let CD be essentially a leaks album + bonuses and let the chips fall where they may?

IIRC both "Madagascar" and "CITR" were both mentioned as lead singles early on. So....

I do think "Better" is a really strong single and "IRS" is a good B-side. The former even had some good buzz around it from bloggers who hated GNR. The leaks did fuck them into a wall.

I wonder if the label has any interest in releasing CD II at all.

If they do, they might want it after a from scratch Axl, Duff, and Slash release.

The good news is that Axl probably has the most leverage that he's had since the early days of the CD project.

As far as Slash being on all of the material, it's probably unavoidable. I don't like it but I accept it. I do hope a Deluxe Edition is released, however.

#1088 Re: Guns N' Roses » Axl at the Chinese Exchange » 479 weeks ago

I don't think he's uninterested in releasing a GN'R album, he said he wants to, and according to rumor they were on the cusp of releasing CD II years ago. I just think that unlike AC/DC or his solo ideas, it's far less encumbered by politics, drama, and red tape.

My hope is that he'll just release the original versions of the songs without Slash, DJ, or Bumblefoot and then start fresh from there.

Unfortunately, I think the fans will be waiting for a long time again.

It was never about Slash specifically, though. He said as much:

I've always thought it was a catch-all song directed at everyone who's held Axl back or told him to "just shut up and sing", from managers to the fans.

Yeah, I know, just being a bit of a cynic.

I think that while Axl may be motivated by various feelings in the moment, when they come out, they tend to be more abstract anyway.

"Sorry" will now be the Swiss Army scapegoat for whomever the fans want to think Axl doesn't like.
