This takes balls because if you don't live up to it then doing the Joe Namath thing can REALLY backfire. On the other hand it sometimes gives your team a shot in the nuts and inspires the team to play at a higher level to make the boast a reality. Historically when this sort of claim has been made in the NFL it yields surprisingly high in positive results that favor the boastee's team.
Steelers' Smith guarantees upset of New England
By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer
December 5, 2007
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Defensive back Anthony Smith is so certain the Pittsburgh Steelers will end the New England Patriots' unbeaten season, he is guaranteeing a win Sunday in Foxborough.
The Patriots (12-0) may have the perfect record, Smith said Wednesday, but it should be New England that is worried about the Steelers (9-3) rather than the other way around.
"People keep asking me if we're ready for the Patriots," Smith said. "They should be asking if they're ready for us."
Is Smith so confident that he is willing to copy one of former Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter's familiar motivational ploys by guaranteeing the Steelers will win?
"We're going to win," Smith said. "Yeah, I can guarantee a win. As long as we come out and do what we got to do. Both sides of the ball are rolling, and if our special teams come through for us, we've got a good chance to win."
Despite Smith's abundant optimism, no other Steelers are designating Sunday as guaranteed win day. Linebacker James Farrior, cautioning that Smith hasn't been in the NFL long and may not realize what he is saying, doesn't think the Patriots will pay any attention.
Smith, a third-round pick from Syracuse in 2006, became the starter at free safety only after Ryan Clark needed spleen surgery in late October.
"He better keep his mouth shut," Farrior said, though he was laughing and wasn't angry at his teammate. "Oh well, I guess we've got to go deal with that."
Or maybe not. Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, asked by Fox Sports Radio about the comments, answered, "Who was it?'
Told it was Smith, Harrison said, "Never heard of him."
Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel also doubts Smith's words will have any impact, even if the Steelers might have been better off not giving an exceptional team like New England any bulletin-board material.
"I think a lot of us in here feel like this is one of those games where we really don't have that much to lose," Keisel said. "If we win the game, well, we weren't supposed to win, and if we lose the game, we were supposed to lose. They're this big, great team that no one can touch."
The Steelers stopped the Patriots' record 21-game winning streak in 2004, but they have dropped five of six to New England since 1997 -- with two losses in AFC championship games.
Still, Smith is convinced there are multiple reasons why the Steelers will be the team that makes certain New England doesn't become the first NFL team to sweep a 16-game schedule.
Pittsburgh's defense has allowed the fewest points and yards in the NFL and, Smith said, "We don't expect that to change."
Also, he said, the Steelers are more physical than any team New England has faced and are so balanced offensively, the Patriots can't stop both Willie Parker's running and Ben Roethlisberger's throwing.
If the Patriots thought the Ravens were physical Monday night when New England was forced to stage a desperation rally to win 27-24 in the final minute, Smith said, wait until they meet up with Pittsburgh.
"They say they played their toughest game last week against Baltimore, but I think we play harder than Baltimore," Smith said. "They're going to be in for it again this week. They're going to have a tough week in front of them."
Smith isn't worried his words might give the Patriots a motivational kick during a tough week in which the Patriots are playing two physical AFC North teams in a seven-day span. Or that his own teammates will dislike what he is saying.
"They will back me up," Smith said. "Everyone has the same attitude anyway, so it's not like it's a big thing."
If Smith didn't give the Patriots enough hey-look-at-this material, here's this nugget for the Patriots' receiving corps: Smith said they may have Randy Moss, but Cincinnati -- not New England -- has the league's best wide receivers.
"They've got Walker and Moss," Smith said, referring to Patriots receivers Wes Welker and Randy Moss. "But they're not like Cincinnati."
The Steelers shut down the Bengals' passing game during a 24-10 victory Sunday night, limiting star receiver Chad Johnson to six harmless catches. Carson Palmer completed only 38.6 percent of his passes (17-of-44) and was 11-of-37 (29.7 percent) after Cincinnati's opening drive.
Keisel could only laugh after hearing Smith's comments, saying, "Maybe I should start (guaranteeing games)."
Will he begin doing that next week, when the Steelers play the Jacksonville Jaguars (8-4)?
"Maybe the week after that," he said.

It's been a terrible year for me, losing my dad and watching him suffern to the very end overides anything that was great this year. http://forums.prowrestlingfans.com/imag … erysad.gif
Sorry to be downer
carry on
I'm sorry you had a tough experience like this but things will get better and the good times with your dad far outweighed the bad, nothing can take those good memories away. He (and those cherised memories) will always be with you...that stays.

Hard to believe but we are almost at the end of another year. What was your favorite movie, cd release, sport event (etc) this year?
Here's mine:
Movie: Halloween - It's not that the movie was anywhere near as good as it should have been but Rob Zombie's remake did some things right and these things made Michael Myers a scary figure again, not some lame guy wearing a mask who spars with rappers. This movie may fall to second by the weekend if I finally get to see The Mist. This short story by Stephen King has always been one of my favorites and I have heard the movie does the novella justice.
Music: Megadeth's boxed set of rarities entitled Warchest. This boxed set includes some of Megadeth's best stuff throughout their amazing career. You have a buffet of their best songs to feast upon as well as some excellent sounding previously unreleased live tracks and demos. Finally you get a dvd that really showcases what this band is like live. The concert footage is at the end of the Countdown to Extinction tour and the band is at their best. Holy Wars, Lucretia, Wake Up Dead, In My Darkest Hour, Peace Sells...they are all played live to perfection along with many other Megadeth staples. GET THIS ONE but get it used on Amazon or Ebay and save a little cash.
Sports: Oddly enough I have to hand this one to the New England Patriots. The reason being the great competition from the teams playing them. Indy, the Eagles and now the Ravens have made for some of the best NFL games to date and there could still be a couple more left during regular season...who knows what awaits in the playoffs!

In the end it is going to be this lack of communication that comes back to bite the wallets of those who are "the record company" and of Axl. You can't continually bite the hand that feeds you and expect to prosper for long. The more fans (potential buyers) are alienated, be it Axl/the record company/both's fault, the less potential this album has to do well. I'm sure if someone did a correlation bar map you would see as delays and lack of communication rise that interest of the project at all levels (from the record company's view as well as the fanbase) decline. How much longer can anyone expect this project to have any chance at success?

Slither and Fall to Pieces were glimpses of "what may be" to me but that was the highlights and the end of anything of note from this band. With the talent and potential that Velvet Revolver had this band has been nothing short of a major disappointment to me. Libertad was horrible in my opinion. To me THAT was the end.
From here I'd (of course) like to see the original GNR reunite but NOT until Chinese Democracy is released. Otherwise I wouldn't mind seeing a new band form with Duff and Slash ... I could give a shit less about the rest. I liked STP but Weiland has done nothing outside of Slither really to impress me with VR.

This list is odd but I do agree with Estranged being on there over November Rain or Civil War. One thing I DON'T agree with is putting When the Levee Breaks on this list and NOT putting Kashmir...are you fuckin' kidding me?

The Ravens/Pats game was great. I earned a new respect for Ray Lewis and the way he motivated and led his team. I lost a little more for Brady. I thought he acted like a total prick in the interview that followed the game. Too cocky and too whiney. The fact is the bonehead timeout on the 4th and 1 is the only reason they got the win and to be fair a couple of calls that were made heavily favored the Pats and had they not been made the outcome could have been much different. Brady was even questioned about this very thing when some reporter mentioned that [paraphrase] "alot of calls went your way in the fourth quarter", he got pissed off and came back with something like "the other three quarters went their way". Hardly true, the Ravens were penalized 13 times for 100 yards while the Pats were only penalized 4 times for 30 yds.
In the end Baltimore played a good game and the Pats played a good game. It's obvious that Brady (in particular) and the Pats are no longer so sure they can't be beat this season however and I think Pittsburgh has a great chance of offing the perfect season.

I think bands like Trixter, Firehouse, etc. helped usher in the grunge movement even quicker than it would have happened. It would have happened anyways as grunge had the full support of the media, but when the media and public seen these wastes of space type bands on the tv and radio representing hard rock, everyone knew it was time for a change.
I couldn't agree more. I have long said that THIS is the real reason along with the fact that the bands that were good got lazy and either put out shit albums or went years without anything at all. However when bands like Trixter, Firehouse, Mr. Big, (insert other meaningless band here) started popping up everyone wanted nothingmore than to kill these fags off. This opened the door and then the great music of Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam (and a few others) kicked it down.

Those ratings say alot, this has been another very strange season. Just a couple of years ago the AFC West was the toughest division in the league. A 9-7 wouldn't get you the playoffs, and a couple of seasons ago a 10-6 wasn't even enough for Kansas City. Fast forward to this season and the Chargers are on top with a 7-5 record and even Denver at 5-7 is alive, pretty sad. KC simply sucks. We went from 4-3 to 4-8. Damon Huard is an interception machine, they bench him and bring in Brody Croyle. He does pretty good so Herm Edwards brings back D. Huard yesterday and he throws two interceptions...brilliant coaching.
The Browns are the team I would also expect to surprise somebody that faces them. They didn't lose that game yesterday by the way, it was a bad call. The receiver had a touchdown and he was forced out. Problem is you can't review a force out only the catch itself so throwing a flag only proves he caught the ball, does nothing about the problem of the force out. The NFL MUST get rid of the force out rule OR (and this is the right way to go) make it reviewable. The Browns are one better than their record because of a bad call and would have been only a game behind Pittsburgh.
Tonight we'll see if the Ravens can do anything against NE...doubtful. To beat NE you must have a good offense and an aggressive defense, it's the only way they will be stopped from a perfect season.
