Illegal immigrant '˜never' thought to leave boy
Man comforted child after mom died in Arizona desert crash, officials say
Good Samaritan, but not American
Nov. 28: A Mexican man was trying to cross into the U.S. border illegally when he ran into a traumatized 9-year-old Arizona boy needing help. NBC's George Lewis reports on an unlikely hero.
updated 8:35 p.m. ET, Wed., Nov. 28, 2007
PHOENIX - An illegal immigrant who gave up his long walk into the U.S. to help a boy whose mother was killed in a van crash in the desert said Wednesday that he never thought of leaving the child.
"I am a father of four children. For that, I stayed," Manuel Jesus Cordova Soberanes said in Spanish from his home in the Mexican state of Sonora. "I never could have left him. Never."
Authorities said Cordova may have saved the life of 9-year-old Christopher Buztheitner, whose mother was killed when their van ran off a cliff in a remote area north of the Mexican border on Thanksgiving Day.
A spokeswoman for the Mexican consulate in Nogales said the office is working to obtain a short-term visa for Cordova so he can come to Arizona and be recognized for his actions.
The 26-year-old bricklayer was two days into his walk and about 50 miles from Tucson when he saw the boy, who had walked away from the crash.
In a telephone interview with The Associated Press from his home in Magdalena de Kino, Mexico, Cordova said Christopher had scrapes on his leg and was dressed in shorts despite the desert cold.
The boy had his dog with him and was holding a side mirror from the wrecked van.
'I just sat next to him'
Neither Cordova nor Christopher spoke the other's language, but the boy took the migrant to the edge of a canyon and showed him the accident site.
Authorities said Christopher and his mother, 45-year-old Dawn Alice Tomko, had been in the area camping. Tomko was driving on a U.S. Forest Service road when she lost control of the van, which landed 300 feet from the road.
By the looks of the mangled van down below, Cordova said, it was obvious the boy's mother had died. The child was distraught but did not cry.
"I felt frustrated and sad because I couldn't do anything for the mother," Cordova said. "And I didn't know how to console the boy, so I just sat next to him."
Cordova gave the boy the sweater he was wearing, climbed down to the van, and found chocolate and cookies to feed him.
He then built a bonfire, and the two hunkered down. The boy slept most of the night; Cordova kept watch and tended the fire.
Mexican mayor calls man a hero
Fourteen hours later, a group of hunters found the pair and called for help. U.S. Border Patrol agents took Cordova into custody, and Christopher was flown to a hospital in Tucson.
Christopher was reunited with family over the weekend; a message left with his uncle was not immediately returned Wednesday.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said Cordova is "very, very special and compassionate" and may have saved the boy's life.
Adriana Hoyos Rodriguez, the mayor of Magdalena de Kino, called Cordova a hero. "He left everything to save that boy," she said.
Cordova said he wanted to come to the United States to earn money to feed his four children, who live with their mother, and help support his girlfriend's three children. "I have two families, many mouths to feed," he said.
He said that even though his trip was thwarted, he is glad to be back home and wishes Christopher the best. "I hope he has a good life," he said.

This should be good. The angles in the death scenes (especially in the first two FD's) and the way they were filmed would be a perfect setting for the use of 3-D, IF it is done correctly.

This Baz disaster doesn't mean too much: he hyped the album a lot, used Axl's name to promote it, but hey, most GN'R fans just downloaded the 3 songs and that's all. My only fear that Axl gets scared that his name din't sell Baz's record. [/i]
I think you and DTJ are correct about GNR fans just downloading the three songs. It would have been very interesting to see the difference in sales had the three songs with Axl not been available as independant downloads.
You hit on something else I've been thinking about Mikkamakka and that is how will this effect Axl? He has been (at least seemingly) very reluctant to release Chinese Democracy and I believe it is because his name is so much at risk on this project at this point. A mediocre selling cd would be a huge slap to his ego. Baz's record not selling well could be another "reason" to delay CD in his mind. On the flip side if Axl was to find the three songs he sang on were downloaded heavily, this may give him a boost. I would really like to see the number of downloads for these three songs vs the album as a whole.

I agree DTJ that GNR would do much better but I just don't know if they would get as big as debut as we all hope or as they would have if the album were released say back in 2004 or even 2006 as "promised". I'm thinking it may not see a debut that high on the top 40 (perhaps somewhere in the low 20's or high teens) whereas before it (in my opinion) would have been a top ten or higher debut. Maybe someday we will find out...maybe.

This was disappointing. I really expected a top 100 (probably low but still in the top 100) debut, especially with the good reviews and Axl being on the cd. If for some reason the cd was sent to these outlets in such small quantities as a marketing scheme it definitely backfired. There were people who went looking for this cd and were turned away because it wasn't available. Based on the sales it is a given this wouldn't have saved the disappointing debut but he may have been able to push out another 25-35%. That would have been important because now that the initial buzz is gone and the album has basically flopped it will be a harder sale.
What does suck is the topic no one wanted to talk about during the promotional phase of this album: How does this affect Axl and GNR? Axl was the main selling point of this album and it debuts almost out of the top 200.
Good point James. Chinese Democracy/Axl has lost quite a bit of clout by letting this mythical album change from the status of "most anticipated" to "joke". Things were bad enough already but then promising the album in 2006 and not delivering really did some major damage. I wonder how well Chinese Democracy will/would debut when/if it is ever released? A few years back it would have been an almost guaranteed top ten debut I think, now....I'm not so sure.

I just clicked on the link. It's gonna help the sales of Libertad since Libertad is right below it and can actually be bought.
Axl and Beta will be happy to hear that news. That gives them something to talk about for a few months.
Lol, I totally agree. I'm of the same mindset James, without a tracklist and/or an album cover it is just more of the same ol' shit.

I'm interested in knowing the numbers as well. The album is better than I expected and Axl DOES sound amazing, hopefully it will do relatively well. Like DTJ it only makes me want more, it's like a tease.
#1170 Re: The Sunset Strip » QUIET RIOT - KEVIN DUBROW Dead At 52 Confirmed Accidental Overdose » 917 weeks ago
I didn't realize it was 24 years to the day, that is very strange. So weird how life always seems to be a "wheel" that makes the oddest connections but yet they happen too often to ignore.
Metal Health was definitely a key staple that solidified mainstream rock as a viable product. The videos and music of Quiet Riot dominated much of the early 80's and QR/DuBrow's contributions should not be forgotten. On Metal Health there was a song called "Thunderbird" which was written/dedicated to the late Randy Rhoads. The song now rings true for Kevin as well. Peace to you and may you not be forgotten.
