#111 Re: Guns N' Roses » The next GNR album: Current known state of songs » 96 weeks ago

Slash made it sound in an interview in 2022 that the plan was to release 1 or 2, then another 1, or 2.  Then that's it for the lockdown songs and onto a new record.

I think he said that a year after absurd hard school had dropped...so if we're lucky there's another 2 after the Perhaps/General release.

So my take from that is they might have basically found the 5 most GNR songs or the 5 ones with the best vocals out of the CD sessions and then are going to move on entirely.

That said, I'm sure any ones that are Axl piano based like Oklohoma is said to be will turn up one day. But stuff based off bucket/brain jams I'm not so sure about. But who knows with these guys.

A good example would be

This I Love. Isn't there practically another song buried in the mix?

Catcher and Better. Way too fucking abrasive. Clean it up and let these songs breathe.

CD - Remove the garbage from it.

Oh...and get that bass up in the mix.

It wouldn't take much for someone to improve the album.

Agreed...a good example to me is the title track - the demo of that is so powerful in the verses with Tommy's bass chugging loudly, and its almost totally lost in the final mix.

I know this will be an unpopular idea with you guys as you're big bucket fans etc....but I was listening to Hardschool, Perhaps and Absurd in the car...then swapped over to Chinese - and it was so obvious to me how badly it needs a rock mix to fit with the back catalogue.

It's a wonderful artistic album as it was. But I would love to hear a studio of Slash/Duff on the title track, TIL (with the scream vocals from the dance remix), Catcher and better, with re-recorded parts from Slash/Duff. Make it as like a bonus EP or something to fill in time before their next originals project. It doesn't have to replace the original version in the shops either, more like a special edition disc 2 or something. It's just every time I see Slash and Duff play them live I realise how hollow those recordings sounded in the final mix.

Cool. I’m happy for them. Even Fernando

I was listening to Melissa’s cover of Sorry and she really needs to be utilized more

Her take on Sorry made me appreciate Axl's songwriting more.

Like you can see how he could write pop songs like that rather than just rock.

Reminds me of when Cornell did that scream album with timberland.

Anybody know what the new vocals are on this song? I never listened much to the demo.

There's a few things, some of the lyrics sound like they are alternative takes or reinforced vocals - a few of the 'heys' at the start have a slightly different tone than the demo imo.

The major thing is the mixing on the chorus has the "got a lot more than I bargained for" vocals with his lower register at the front and the high version in the background, in the demo these parts were much more prominently in the high register I think.

Also there used to be a "save me" Axl backing vocal in the background on those parts which is either gone or very quiet now.

John 5 would have been interesting in the band cos based on his motley crue stuff he would have played note perfect versions of the recorded stuff as tribute to the creators.

I think he's trying to be funny - like quoting lyrics from perhaps and the general in his answer.

But there's been so much drama over the years that I agree some straight info wouldn't hurt!

That said, perhaps is out, the general is coming, it's party time.

I just need them not to forget about state of grace next time hahahaha.

Wqs chatting to Gibbo offline who reminded me how Slash did that music for Halloween Horror Nights a few years back, that sort of thing might really suit the intense (as far as we could hear) sound of The General.

Very excited for this.

HOLY SHIT....

why bury it as a B side? Perhaps should be the B side.

My guess is because it's a bit weird. The modern band thinks of itself as UYI Gnr or before. Even when they do CD tracks they put classic rock spin on it.

The inaudible general leak we heard sounded much more like an art piece, cinematic classical music, slow passages like a dance track, epic bass drops and banche demonic passion god tier Axl mode.

Awesome...stuff for us...but not for the radio...and not the kinda thing that follows SCOM in the set...

(then again neither was Absurd and they made that rock enough to play - so who knows)

Still it's great news, I think the song sounded like it had a kickass chorus/ rant section.

So what's the next batch of 2 then?

Atlas/State of Grace????

Or does Quicksong/Zodiac?oklohoma feature?

Slash basically said it was these 4 or 5 then on to a brand new album - which would be good psychologically but I do wanna hear one or two of these old tracks still - they're so cool.

The video is very cool. It's nice to have GNR more functional again.

I notice

Untitled.jpg

John 5 and Tommy Lee rolling with Frank and Fortus. Love to see some Motley/GNR shows happen together if they can forget the 1980s beef.

I'll go to my grave saying Better was initially two song ideas merged into one.

I think it sounds like that too.

It's kind of a theme on CD I think - a lot of the songs and demos seem to randomly swap genres mid song or incorporate elements you wouldn't expect within the style of song - seems to be something Axl was interested in experimenting with.

I love how the album turned out, but I must say I often find it jarring - when it's done well it works but it can feel bolted on.
