Then when you get to the 2000s you would get the piano +tobias formed CD songs along with contraband era rockers from slash.

Or if they'd had a mild fight for a shorter time, I think a 2005 reunion album would have included a lot of the Slash solo material like Ghost, Back From Cali etc.

The reality we live in is kinda messed up.

It hurts me sometimes to think we could have had 1990s slash on This I love and There was a time - which are probably some of Axl's best works ever, and we could have had  2006 era Axl on stuff like Wicked Stone and Anastasia.

I know Slash plays them these days, but he's playing a cover of the existing solos, I want to know what he would have composed for it. Imagine the outro to Anastasia Sydney 2010 with Axl....

As bad obsession would say, "Too bad you're fucked up" 10

Had a look but couldn't find it either...this one is similar in stonewash version but it's not the exact thing he had.

So that 96 album would have included:

Fall to Pieces
Back and Forth Again
The Rose Petalled Garden (BLS)

And maybe Hard School & Down By The Ocean? Am I forgetting anything?

To me the starting point is 5 O'clock Somewhere....

Those were the songs that Slash/Gilby wanted to put on the GNR record. What happened is one of those perspective issues. Slash's take is that Axl rejected them because he wanted to pursue an industrial sound. Axl's take is that Slash told him he had to sing them 'as is' and wasn't allowed to contribute. I suspect probably a bit of truth in both sides - Axl has said before he finds his process works best writing music around his melodies rather than being handed finished guitar tracks, so putting that with his then interest in electronic music might have been seen by Slash as rejection even if it wasn't intended as such. One can also understand Slash's perspective that he needed to get back on the road to get off drugs, the UYI recording had taken 2 years, and he just wasn't up for an extended hiatus of fucking around with them. The way its now been 15 year intervals between albums kinda makes his point. On the other hand when your singer is Axl, with Axl's talent, it's pretty stupid to tell him he doesn't get to contribute musically.

Anyways....whoever is right about it....I think it's fair to say in a more functional relationship...where Slash wasn't willing to take his riffs elsewhere, and where Axl was still hanging out with them contributing organically rather than keeping different hours and with different staff....I think....those riffs would have been the foundational rockers of the next album....and the songs you've mentioned would be the huge ballads....maybe Catcher too? I think it would have had a very UYI vibe.

I mean it would be fun for robin to come out and do that...but i'm sure richard could handle it like he does Fink and Bucket's solos in some of the other songs.

I just listened on a better stereo to the same potato-quality leak and i hadn't noticed slash doing a cool slide in to his solo during the robin bit...could be I was full of absolute shit and the solo is fine lol.

Can't wait to hear it in proper quality, it's such a catchy song.

Brian May talked about Axl being emotionally attached to Robin’s guitar work so it makes sense he left that part in.

I almost wish he had left it in properly and add slash as well.

Like have the robin solo on the studio in the middle section where it was - let richard play this live - then have a another solo section either right after it or at the end where Slash gets to do an outro or something.

But hey, it's not my song I guess, and Axl does write some kickass songs. This shit is so catchy. Lets hope they release it.

Yes I recall Ron really pushing in the media for them to take this kind of approach of getting the music out with individual songs.

I'm glad it's finally happening. Hope we get perhaps properly on Friday.

It's probably tricky too...like Slash is being come in and asked to play over existing recordings that we're Axl's babies at the time and of which there was a lot of drama around - and in some cases by players who don't really play in his style.

Generally he's doing that well - just playing them with more of a classic rock vibe (eg the title track!)  - but you can see why maybe he felt that's not a moment for him to re-invent the wheel. It's not the time he's going to push back against song structures or really try and take some heavy risks with his playing. So I think that's what's happened. Same on Absurd - live he goes crazy and shreds it up - but the studio version if quite 'safe' and non offensive.

He's also probably doing it in a hotel room on the road with myles or something...and who knows if Axl was around to ask questions of....then when Axl hears it back....is he really gunna ask Slash to have another pass at it? Like he's probably just glad they sorted their shit out and can work together at all - even casually like it is.

So my guess is slash went safe to not piss off Axl, and Axl didn't call him on it to not piss off Slash.

But then that could be entirely fictional - who the fuck knows how suff happens, being in a band is always weird and the creative process is even stranger.

And yeah that transition is weird. I don’t think it’s a production problem, that was done on purpose because someone wanted it that way

Then the question becomes....

Why?

My guess is:

1. He was familiar (20+ years) with that dramatic opening to the solo so anything new makes it feel "missing".

2. Asking Slash to just replicate those couple of notes philosophically means you are telling Slash what to play - and you don't tell Slash how to do his job. Not only that you really don't tell him to do something the guy you tried to replace him with did - I'd be surprised if they speak much of that time at all lest they accidently re-ignite old drama.

Anyway, I dunno at all why they did it of course, but that's why I might have done it in that situation.

My thoughts on the song so far:

I still think it's a kickass tune (always have since the demo).

I love Slash and hate to rag on him but I don't think this was his best work. If you or I played that we would be happy - in itself it's a charming little solo - but it's not worthy of Slash - as someone said above it feels like a first take - and it feels too much like he just went the opposite of the existing solo - like play low where it was high just to be something else.

Vocals sound like they are badass, but I really wanna hear a proper studio release for that rarther than these pocket kinda recordings.

We thought global release was last friday then the rumour surfaced that it was "delayed" - my guess is this one slipped through the cracks and came out as per the previous plan. Suggests that it will be out properly very soon though.

Love Slash but not sold on that solo with the cut and paste, I get Axl wanting to keep those first few notes as they are hard wired in my brain too as "how it goes" after this long. But I think maybe he should have asked slash to ape that part then do his own thing. it sounds very weird with an overdub guitarist kicking in to grab your attention then fading out immediately. But I reserve judgement till I hear the release version on spotify or something without all the bar noise.

Axl's "eeyeyyyyyeeeeee" sounded awesome though. Enough to put me in GNR mode right there. I love that we are slowly getting a cool EP out of this....wish it was faster...but I do like these songs.
