If they were truly aiming for success they should have chosen a different song. Hard School or Perhaps. The general public and the casual concert attendees who want to hear SCOM and NR won't dig this track. The song won't get any radio airplay with these lyrics.
Don't get me wrong, I like the song and I'm glad they finally put something out, but they surely can't expect it to be the next Paradise City or Jungle...
They should call the album Not In This Lifetime, cuz this being the first single with Duff and Slash back in the band is a bigger surprise than the reunion tour itself. It's literally the most absurd thing they could have done for a release..
Agreed, they went with this song for a reason and that reason wasn’t so it could be a #1 smash hit. Who knows what the actual reason is. Monkey laid out a few good options. Maybe they just like the aggressiveness of the song when they performed it? For the first time in a long time it seems as though there’s a plan. I would expect Hard School will be unveiled later on this tour. It could just be a coincidence, but they unveiled Absurd in Boston & announced the single in NY, two major cities. In this day and age I’m not sure how much that matters when everything finds its way to the internet anyway, but maybe the plan is to debut Hard School in another large city. The LA show is in a few weeks, so that might be too soon? Chicago next month?

I think even people who hate the song have to admit the title is hilarious and the release of the song is ballsy. "Absurd." Yep, that's exactly the correct word to describe this song if you are only familiar with the classic GN'R sound. And unlike My World, this strange song is actually released as a single. Ballsy as hell. LMAO
FWIW: as of Friday afternoon, it's #12 overall on the iTunes Pop chart and #1 on the iTunes Rock chart.
While I don’t think the song has staying power, I think it’s pretty impressive that it’s #12 on the overall pop chart. I’d say that’s more promising than the negative feedback it’s inevitably getting. I gave the song negative feedback 20 years ago, those people just have to wait until 2040 and it’ll grow on them. Hang in there!

I wouldn’t worry about Axl getting scared off by bad reviews this time around. He’s not alone to shoulder the whole burden now. It was all on him before. With Slash and Duff by his side, there’s a lot less pressure. If he really was worried about that, I highly doubt they would have led with Absurd.
Someone brought this up before and I was thinking the same thing. Do you think this was the plan all along, meaning leading into the tour? Play show 1 to get warmed up, debut Absurd show 2, announce it’ll be released as a single show 3 knowing word will spread like wildfire amongst the online community. Or did they decide to throw it all together after they got some buzz after playing it at Fenway?

Anyone compare it to that version with Bumblefoot? I flushed that long ago after hearing it.
I never heard that one. Missed it while I was absent I guess. No reason to hear it now though I suppose

People are people... if GN'R will release an all new songs album, NuGN'R fans will bitch about the "lost CD recordings", and will blame Slash and Duff.
If the new album will contain some of the leaked songs, AFD5 fanatics will complain.Any cover they'll record will get much hate as well.

Yeah, I think you’re always going to get that. That’s why message boards exist, right? So people can share their differing viewpoints. Can’t blame people for feeling a little jaded after all these years. I sometimes wonder why you’d keep coming back for more, but I guess there’s an obsession of sorts that’s hard for all of us to let go of, regardless of what is or isn’t going on. Last night was the first show I haven’t gone to in my region (2 hours away) since 2002. I’m jealous of those that got to witness it, but I’m hopeful they’ll be back with even more to offer down the line.
