#141 Re: The Sunset Strip » Rolling Stones - Hackney Diamonds album » 93 weeks ago
Listened to Hackney Diamonds on a loop last night before bed..and woke up to it playing.
My opinion unchanged...their best since Voodoo Lounge and the two best songs Tell Me Straight and Sweet Sounds of Heaven.
Jagger and Richards spotted in the studio. They may be finishing those leftovers for a deluxe edition soon.

RIP
This is one of those bands I've heard about for eons but never really listened to them.
Instead of listening to the Stones tonight, I'll queue up an assortment of their songs.

Not that you guys care, but you should. The Replacements just re-released Tim.
Ill give it a listen. I love listening to remixed albums. Animals was incredible...REM's Monster was a dud.
Sick how the The Wall remix was finished long ago but just gathers dust because they just can't get along. A miracle we even got Animals.
Yeah this obviously got delayed.

Yeah it's coming.
God...pease let it be be in high quality.

Holy shit...I forgot Pee Wee's Big Adventure! That would have to be in my top 10 somewhere.
Shining (not as scary as it used to be)
It's more of a psychological horror film about family dysfunction/abuse. I definitely see it differently than I did in my youth. The presence/ghosts more to propel the story along.
Nightmare on Elm Street (idea is great, Wes Craven just not in the Carpenter league)
I need to watch this again.
It is an awesome idea. It needed to be taken more seriously...more of a dark approach, doom and gloom, less Freddy the comedian. They also needed to go all in on Freddy as child molester/killer. They flip flop on this.
Clint, Pacino and DeNiro were all in a slump in the 80s. Not many from them.
Heartbreak Ridge and Honkey Tonk Man his two best 80s films.
My favorite Pacino 80s movie is Author! Author!
De Niro is damn lucky he even made it out of the 80s with his star power intact.
Rambo First Blood
Die Hard
This made me realize I didn't include any action movies on my list...unless Aliens is considered action.
The Terminator would come close to making it.
They Live is awesome...would've made my list in my youth but it's too cheesy.

Let's do the 80s now.
A huge contrast from the realistic, gritty 70s with a huge injection of cheese. This impacted both film and TV.
Definitely some classics though.
Stand By Me
The Shining
The Thing
Missing
Broadway Danny Rose
Friday the 13th part II
River's Edge
Aliens
Coal Miners Daughter
Arthur
Honorary mentions....some could have easily made my list...
Star 80
Night Shift
Hannah and Her Sisters
Full Metal Jacket
Throw Momma from the Train
Wall Street
Hellraiser
Brighton Beach Memoirs
Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Not much football discussion this season.
On Monday I watched the first Bears game in about 4-6 weeks. They won...but that was an ugly game. I didn't realize the Bears get the #1 and #4 picks in the draft. They better not waste those.
Like all seasons in the parity era, it's topsy turvy in comparison to the previous season. Some teams that were good now suck...and vice versa.
There's a Barry Sanders documentary on Amazon that looks really good. Gonna have to watch it soon. Always felt sorry for him. One of the greatest players in history yet had to waste his career in Detroit.

Tubi and Amazon have a bunch of movies leaving at the end of the month so figured I'd watch a few.
That Thing You Do - They do a great job on the 60s setting. About a one hit wonder with Hanks as their manager...and you start getting sick of that song.
Capricorn One - I iked it but it does have faults. It feels like a TV movie. They don't do a good job piecing the conspiracy together. Gould should've been digging for the truth from the get go. Instead we get a handful of scenes for him to put it all together. Also not enough scenes of them on the Mars stage or in the ship. The climax is lackluster.
When all those Mars movies were coming out in the 2000s, one of them should've been a remake of this.
It's weird seeing Sam Waterston in anything but Law and Order.
The Little Things - This is even worse on a rewatch. There's a good story here but the incompetent detective almost kills it.
James wrote:12 Angry Men (1997) - Great film. An all star cast .. including Gandolfini right before The Sopranos. Great chemistry. Should've swept the Golden Globes and other awards shows. This might be the best made for TV movie ever.
While it's a drama...it's really a comedy drama. I laughed every few minutes at their bitching/yelling.
Love how the story plays out...it's all about the jury...the criminal and anything else irrelevant.
I need to watch the original from the 1950s.
I’ve yet to see the 1997 remake, but the 1950’s version had me gripped all the way through. An absolute classic.
Maybe I should watch this tonight.

Wouldn't say garbage, but it gets old pretty fast. Monsters is best of the bunch, still can't stop listening to it
This is the problem with the drip feed strategy...and dripping it on a starved hardcore base.
Casuals and non-fans don't give the tiniest of shits while hardcores listen to it on a loop for a week or two until they get sick of it.
Now we're waiting for the next song that may never come before these songs have been officially released.
polluxlm wrote:Incredible how many different opinions there are about GN'R songs!
I more or less like the post CD stuff a lot more than CD (demos excluded). As a fan I guess it is harder to judge. Most casual fans would probably say the songs are poor, compared to Jungle, NR etc.
I think the material is just all out of context and in the wrong time.
Yep...all the material is clearly meant for the 2000-3 timeframe. It would be like the Beatles releasing songs from Sgt. Peppers in 1989...or Pink Floyd releasing Animals in 2002.
The lack of context for a potential casual audience is wacky in itself. These practically random songs just drop without knowing or caring about their history. It's unprecedented. No mention of an album or movie/video game soundtrack. There's no sign that the band cares about any of these songs. They're just there... waiting for you to listen...or not.
For me The General is the best song we've heard of the CD material. It's mature and brave, but 20 years too late and not really a GNR song.
While I don't think it's the best, I agree in spirit. The album needed more of this and less Steph/Slash.
I also agree with Jimmy. None of this stuff is really mind blowing and it's now much easier to see why CD II never materialized. Other than incompetent management incapable of getting it released in the 2010s, there's no cohesive album. The leftovers are just a random hodgepodge of songs in varying states of completion. Whether they're good or bad doesn't change this fact.

I don’t know why people would be expecting changes to the version we’ve already heard. They played it live twice. Cats out of the bag we know what it sounds like.
People were expecting a HQ version of the song...like all other bands release.
We passed off the shit quality due to the leaker fucking with it. Now we know that's not the case.
They must have, what else would they be playing when it's not been released anywhere yet?
It was getting a CD exclusive release in Japan. Not surprising radio stations got an early copy.
