14 Sums up The Mats quite nicely.

Paul gets more recognition being primary songwriter but for what its worth the Stinson bros owned Sorry Ma, Stink and Hootenanny.

I think "Let It Be" is usually the recommended album for new listeners. That's how I first discovered em all those years ago 16

Hopefully madagas can throw in his recommendation and some more insight for ya. If I start to babble about the Mats I'll end up banned by tomorrow 14

from what i understand they were a small part of the us punk scene in the 80's with black flag and the bad brains and other bands like that...

Started of with punk ("Sorry Ma, Forgot..." and "Stink") whilst everything post-Stink were rock.

Neemo wrote:

...anyway i'm not sure how influential they actually were? hmm is it like a 3 year window in the midwest?

I'd say they were influential. Plenty of bands have given kudos (and still do) to the Mats. To name a few Green Day, Counting Crows, Ryan Adams, even Cobain himself apparently smile

Neemo wrote:

or do they actually have a legitimate following

Without a doubt. No further comment.

Neemo wrote:

this is prolly more of a madagas queation than anything since he seems to really be "the guy" if you wanna know about stinson's past efforts

I'll gladly backup all of madagas's praise for the Mats.

Whether Mats should reunite is difficult to call. As Paul said, don't want to ruin the legend status they carry.

Instead of this Rocky and Rambo shit, he should do a sequel to Cobra. That film deserved a sequel back in the 80's.

If only he'd be 10-15 years younger, I could see another Cobra (originally envisioned as another franchise) in the pipeline...

Are you guys serious? It was a decent movie but had no potential for a lengthy run of sequels. One "Cobra" movie was quite enough for me.

Lock Up on the other hand was a fine Stallone flick that deserves more recognition.

Remastered 'Mats -- a vein to be mined

"Next Tuesday, Rhino Records will release The Replacements' first four Twin/Tone Records releases '” "Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash," "The Replacements Stink" EP, "Hootenanny," and "Let It Be" (the band's final four discs will hit stores in September). These are the remastered beauties that Replacements followers have been waiting for since the band stopped in 1991: Painstakingly and lovingly assembled and produced by the band's original producer and manager (and Twin/Tone co-founder) Peter Jesperson, the original recordings are augmented by 27 previously unreleased tracks and tons of photos and memorabilia that flesh out yet again what many have called the best band of the '80s."

Continued here

Gonna cost an arm and a leg to buy the collection of re-issues, throw in another £20 for beer, £25 for hash, and we have one kickass weekend planned 9 Planning to have a listening party with a mate, we've spent days dissecting the Mats catalog before so should be awesome.

My mate Ed at beenafix.com sent me over the following transcript from Duffs official board smile

Ed wrote:

I got a question about some of the Contraband VR songs, does any of the songs there contain some Izzy ideas etc.?

Cause right after he jammed with The Project late 2002 he started recording Like A Dog in April 2003 and it has the song 'Bomb' which features an almost identical riff as 'Do It For The Kids'. Check out Bomb here:

Also in Slash's bio there's a pic with the four of you jamming saying you're working on a track called 'Snafu' which is also a Like A Dog track.

Some people are wondering if the ideas Izzy had when he was jamming with VR were used a few months later on his Dog album.

Duff wrote:

Yes....that is correct. I am actually gonna go out next week and play on a few Izzy tracks for his new record. Always fun hangin' with Iz! Astute observation and great question by the way!
