I'm glad to see that Axl has hired Bas as his new publicist! smile

As far as vinyl vs. CD, though, there's no doubt that a 12" album is much cooler to hold in your hands, and to appreciate the art. I still have all of my Iron Maiden albums, and 12" singles, with all their cool Derek Riggs art. I even bought a copy of ELP's Brain Salad Surgery simply for the H.R. Giger artwork and I don't think I've ever even listened to the thing. Appetite was one of the first CD's I bought, so I never had that one on vinyl.

I can understand how an analogue recording from the 70's or 80's sounds better on vinyl, because it more accurately captures the original sound wave as it was recorded. But I don't get how a modern pro-tools digital recording can somehow sound better when transferred to analogue and pressed on vinyl. Even if the vinyl 100% faithfully captured the wave form, it would be a faithful capture of the digital samples. Now if it the original master recordings were sampled at 96k or 48k, it could sound better than a 44.1k standard CD. But why not release it in SACD or DVDA format then?

I also like how he refers to CD as "the first album" smile

And also how they're supposed to be starting back up in January, but he's not supposed to talk about it!

I was still holding a slight hope that Axl would have been the cover story on the next Rolling Stone, but it looks like Britney Spears is there instead.

As I said before, the silence is deafening. The lack of any comment whatsoever from Axl speaks volumes about this thing. I mean, he commented on the Dr. Pepper press release earlier this year, and now he doesn't have anything to say when his masterpiece has been released to the world?

Ha ha, that's the same thing I think whenever I hear that song.

And of 2000-present bands, I think some of the few that will be remembered in 20 years are Coheed & Cambria, Slipknot, and System of a Down.

You know, I tried to connect to the page at least 20 - 30 times before I finally got through. If they had enough servers to begin with, I would have got through on the first try and not wasted several dozen further attempts at bandwidth.

Another thing they could have done is to get rid of the graphics-heavy flash driven page and replace it with a simple text entry form as soon as they started having issues.

This kinda reminds me of when NIN put out Ghosts as a web only download, and had lots of server problems the first day. But the difference is it wasn't limited to a one-day-only deal, and they fixed their problems by the second day.

gnrsource has the final verse in Chinese Democracy as

You think you got it all locked up inside
And if you beat them enough, they'll die
It's like a walk in the park from a cell
And now you're keeping your own kind in hell
When you pray for us, blame yourself
While their arms reach up for your help
And you're out of time

Yeah, I've always heard it as "keeping your own kind in hell"

Too bad they didn't make those Chinese takeout packs as a Best Buy limited edition or something. I think a lot of the hardcore fans would have paid $50 for a copy of CD, a shirt, and some of that other stuff in a takeout box.

So GNR at the peak of their success, and with the record industry still riding high as well, sold 770k of UYI2. So with the lack of an epic music video in heavy rotation on MTV, the lack of Axl doing promotional interviews, the changes in the music industry, etc., if with all that they can still move 500k I'd think that was quite an accomplishment.

I just read that they are claiming Black Ice had the biggest mainstream hard rock debut ever with 784,000 copies. I think that's a load of bullshit. They probably didn't even track the numbers very well back when UYI's came out. I bet each of them sold over 1 million, given the state of the music industry and the HUGE demand that there was for those albums.

I just found this on an old Billboard article in reference to the Kanye/50 Cent releases last year.

Billboard wrote:

West's new album ranks 15th among all sales weeks since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking in 1991. The double punch provided by "Graduation" and "Curtis" also marks just the second time in that era that two albums have bowed in the same week with totals surpassing 600,000 copies.

The last such occasion was in September 1991, when Guns N' Roses' "Use Your Illusion II" led The Billboard 200 with 770,000 copies in the same week that the band's companion album "Use Your Illusion I" bowed at No. 2 with 685,000, a pair of numbers now beaten by West and 50's totals.

I should also add that these numbers were not long after they started using the SoundScan system, so they should still be comparable to modern day reporting. They started SoundScan shortly before Skid Row released Slave To The Grind, which changed the way that the charts were ranked, because prior to that they added in factors like radio airplay and copies shipped, etc. When SoundScan started, Skid Row made headlines because they were the first metal band to debut at #1 or something like that, thanks to SoundScan being based solely on copies of CDs sold.

#170 Re: Guns N' Roses » What Really Led To Chinese Democracys Impending Release? » 865 weeks ago

It's a shame that most of the delays leading to Chinese Democracy had more to do with money and the business end of things than to actually do with the music. I'm sure part of the endless tinkering and retooling of the songs was simply to delay the release until the financial matters could be sorted out.
