#171 Re: Guns N' Roses » Slash’s 2018 Recording Plans » 392 weeks ago
Duff and Ben were originally only on a few WP songs on their first album, but they re-recorded parts of it in 2013 for the re-release on a bigger label. WP2 was recorded as a full band effort, all of them in the studio together. I saw them live in 2013, so I already heard some of the new stuff and it sounded like WP2 could be an even better album than WP1. That's probably why I have been waiting so impatiently for this...
Just to clarify, on Duff's solo album it's not Jeff Angell, but Jeff Rouse from Loaded. But yeah, an Izzy/Jeff Angell collaboration would sound really, really interesting

The second Walking Papers record was recorded around Christmas 2013, right after their tour. So actually quite a while ago. There were some issues with the release at first. From what one could gather from their FB Updates, there were troubles with finding the right label and also some issues with naming the record?! It was never announced but reading Barrett Martin's book makes me think they actually broke up at some point. He mentions that in 2014 "his latest rock band split". I don't know what other band that would have been. It also would make sense as their FB Updates almost died completely in 2014. Instead Duff suddenly was talking about a new solo album that he started recording with Izzy and Jeff (from Loaded), Jefferson Angell (singer of Walking Papers) then started his own project with Ben Anderson (the keyboard player of Walking Papers) and nobody was talking about WP2 anymore. Then GN'R happened and only after Barrett's Martin book release he started talking about it in interviews again, saying that they were waiting as long as Duff would be busy with his "day job".

I think when I looked into it back in the day that the 2nd cover Apex posted above is also Japanese in origin.
It wasn't the first time.

OMG, either I never looked close enough, or I just have a vivid imagination, but I always thought it was a bunny on that poster...

given their history, this was pretty cool. hopefully kurt isn't rolling over in his grave.
i'd REALLY love to hear him drum on chinese democracy live. imagine that -- slash's badass guitar works with dave's huge fuckin' drum sound. it'd easily be the definitive version of that song!
i mean, dave's drumming on smells like teen spirit was the inspiration for the drums in chinese democracy, so it would only make sense.
Scott Rowley wrote:The two men sat and talked for six hours straight as Axl filled him in on the state of Chinese Democracy. Fully briefed, the next day Zoot entered the studio without Axl. The first task set him by the singer was to help with the drum sound for the album’s title track. Axl had told the studio guys that he wanted the same drum sound as Dave Grohl on Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. The production crew would claim they had it, but Axl wouldn’t be satisfied. Zutaut asked Roy Thomas Baker and the engineer to play what they had, and found himself agreeing with Axl.
“I’m gonna take a break but I’ll be back,” Tom told them and then he did the only sensible thing: “I went and bought Nevermind at the local Tower Records.” Back in the studio, they compared the two and set to work making the GN’R drummer sound exactly like Grohl. “I guess maybe they heard the Nirvana hits on the radio and they just thought that they knew the sound, but none of them had thought to just go buy the album and listen to it.”
They sent the finished thing over the Axl who called Zutaut straight away: “I’ve only been asking for that for, like, six fucking months!” he said. “You don’t understand: I’ve been losing my fucking mind! I ask you for something, I get it. I’ve been asking other people and they can’t get it?!”
My thoughts excatly...

Agreed, the guitar work is a bit of a mess and at some places also the synths need a little correction. The mix nevertheless sounds more exciting and fresh to me than the 2006 or final versions.
Just kinda underlines the assumption that the album would have sounded better in 2002/03...

I always liked Gilby. Combined with inputs of Axl, Duff & Slash I could have pictured some ideas from Pawnshop Guitars beoming Guns N' Roses material. Anyways, looking forward to his record though!

I'd love a pm if after all those years there might be something 'new' available. Personally I'm hoping for full versions of either Silkworms or Oh My God.
#178 Re: Guns N' Roses » New Tour Dates Added » 398 weeks ago
More interesting is what they plan on doing Jan-June? The optimist in me says studio time, the realist in me just laughed at myself.
It's not gonna be studio time. I guess we'll have to see about Slash, but Duff will probably tour the new Walking Papers record. Barrett Martin did an interview recently, saying WP2 will come out in January 2018 and that they'll tour the record. The reason the record didn't come out for so long is that Duff was busy with GN'R...

Technically, Myles being busy with AB doesn't imply a GN'R reunion. Just saying.
Slash2Baz's comment that that's all he can say, does make me wonder however.
