If only he had demanded the same level of perfection and effort out of his VMA and RIR singing voice, I think this 02 comeback could've been 180 degrees in the opposite direction.
MTV was still stoked for Axl's return until the cringe worthy embarassment of the VMA performance.
Yeah, that was the greatest missed opportunity in GN'R history. MTV was all geared up to promote the new band, their crazy appearance was actually pretty novel and iconic (and not that alienating to the audience in an era where Limp Bizkit's Wes Borland was sporting makeup and contacts). If Axl had bothered to do shed the pounds and engage the services of a vocal coach as he did in 2006, he would've blown them away - and we would've got Chinese Democracy then.

Yeah I remember that. Was always surprised that Silkworms did not surface during that initial 2007 leak. Every song performed in 2001-02 leaked besides Silkworms.
I'm pretty sure that the CD that Classic Rock reviewed is never gonna leak.

Well, I'm not particularly fussed about the moggs (other than mild curiosity at picking out some of the guitar lines - could be useful for learning the songs). But if there's any chance that this might lead to some unreleased material seeing the light of day, I'm excited. A better-quality Brian May CITR (or even, dare I whisper it, Atlas Shrugged), or more of the '99 demos with Robin and Freese, or... God, the Holy Grail for me, the re-recorded AFD...

I think it's probably in their best interest at this point, to just have Slash, Duff & Steven/Matt, and maybe Izzy, find a lead singer, similar, and do their own Guns N' Roses.
I think it's in our best interests, too; if VR are going around doing the classic-rock-old-school-GN'R thing with a vocalist who actually has Axl's range, it frees Axl up to do his own thing as well. People will get their Old GN'R fix from Velvet Revolver, and they'll stop banging on about a reunion. I'm actually kind of excited to hear what Axl will do with New New GN'R - an album recorded from the ground up with a stable lineup of Bumblefoot, DJ, Fortus, Dizzy, Pitman, Tommy and Brain.

I do vaguely wonder how long it'll be after Axl pops his clogs, before some record company exec hits on the idea of raiding his Chinese Democracy vault, stripping out the vocal tracks on the unreleased songs and getting Slash, Duff, Izzy and Adler to lay down some new backing tracks to them.
After a suitably respectful period of mourning, natch. I give it a week.

Ooh. Not that I'm begrudging a free tribute song, but it does sound a bit like he had a song knocking around in a back drawer somewhere and stuck it up on his site, though - it's not very MJ-ish, is it?
Anyway, hope someone tabs it soon, I need some new acoustic tracks to work on...

efff VR, Slash needs to team up with Cantrell and get Corey Taylor to sing. Slash is basically a frontman at this point, so no need for the theatrical singer. Call it Alice Gunn or whatever, play a smattering of GNR/AIC/VR/Jerry Cantrell solo stuff/classic covers, make some amazing albums and tour the world til they die. People just want to rock & Corey Taylor is the man for the job right now.
Thing is, I think if Weiland wasn't there, VR could persuade Izzy back. Maybe not on tour, but in a songwriting/studio capacity. Velvet Revolver with an Axl-quality vocalist in Corey, Izzy writing and Kushner doing his nicely modern effects-driven noodling would be incredible to behold.
Plus, if they can get someone who actually has vocal range, they won't be limited to covering Mr Brownstone and It's So Easy on tour. Truth be told, I was getting a bit sick of them wheeling those two out over and over again...

One of the things I liked about Scott was that he brought a modern edge to the band - stopped them from just belting out AC/DC-esque hard rockers and gave them a bit of credibility. If VR had gone with, say, Sebastian Bach they wouldn't have had that. They face a hell of a tricky job - ideally they need someone who has the modern stylings of a Scott Weiland but the vocal range of an Axl Rose. Oh, and the new frontman needs to have charisma, songwriting ability and ideally an already-established fanbase (getting an unknown in is a bit Judas Priest). Of course, singers who have established fanbases tend to be occupied fronting big bands of their own - something which I suspect nixed the possibility of Chester Bennington joining the band.
Corey Taylor would be an ideal frontman for the band, though. I hope something comes of this. I suspect the chap that the band tried out who didn't work out was Royston Langdon - they seemed to be all set to work with him, and then he did that disastrous performance of It's So Easy with Camp Freddy.
