It's incredible that about a week ago we got The General and possibly also Soul Monster and already the forums are a ghost town againa nd the buzz is gone.

The drip feed approach really kills the hype + it shows how this saga has just taken way too long.

The band should formally announce some of their future plans - like if they're actually doing a new album then just announce that you are doing that. Right now... the future of the band feels like it's entering a 03-05 silent era.

I think it is entering a silent era...they'll come out of hibernation for the farewell/anniversary tour in two years.

Yeah it is crazy we got the two big enchiladas and the forums are already going back to business as usual.

What helps kill it so quickly is the fact they never actually comment on these songs. ZERO info across the board.

So we talk about em for a week, listen on a loop for days, and then it's over. Time for the next drip which is probably not coming...at least anytime soon.

There's no reason to release Atlas or another song now. They aren't doing anything! No tickets in need of some promotion to help sell them.

If another tour leg was starting, yeah Atlas might be on tap.

Worst song topic...

My World
Shotgun Blues
Get In The Ring
Scraped

Pink Floyd - Final Cut

Underrated effort. There are some really good songs on this album. Being a continuation of the Wall does hurt it. Roger should have built something around songs like "Not Now John" instead, but on the other hand then you lose "Your Possible Pasts" which is the best song on the album. Very Wall'ish though.

It doesn't really feel like a continuation though. It's a dirge lacking the epicness of The Wall.

Best songs to me...

Not Now John
Two Suns In The Sunset

I listened to it more this past year than in my entire life. I thought it deserved a second chance. I hated the whole thing back in the day...didn't have a single song in my collection.

It's really unfortunate that it's their last album. I'm with Gilmour...it's not good enough.

They needed to go out with a bang.

Me too.

I gotta give those two a rest soon.

I got a Stones album and Roger Waters to catch up on.

After the release of this set of songs... Absurd to Monsters...I think it's now much clearer on what the A and B lists really were.

Fans always took it as A list = Big Guns, B list= everything else.

It's more like the A list is fully fleshed out songs and the B list is all the 1 verse and a chorus on a loop stuff plus the various instrumentals, sketches, and obvious throwaways.

No one had any idea at the time that big guns would actually be on this B list.

Personally what I'd prefer more than anything is leaks or boxset release of CD material with the musicians who actually wrote those songs. However, it's very possible we never hear that.

Failing that I'd really like them to continue with releasing Slash/Duff reworked CD era songs, preferably as a bigger release and not a dripfeed. The dripfeed approach is really old and boring.

Failing that.... give us something completely new. I personally dont think what these guys write and produce in their 60s will be that interesting so if what that Mayhue guy said about there being Appetite and UYI era songs that were never finished I'd prefer those.

Failing that... just release more proshots in good quality like the 91 Ritz.

Really though. I just wish they'd ditch the secrecy and silence. It's not cool or mysterious. It's annoying. They aren't the pinnacle of pop culture like they were in the early 90s and they don't have the mystique of the early CD years. You have an older fan base with disposable income, talk to them and give them things to buy that they want.

The Scooby Doo sooper sekrit mystery crap should've ended the moment the album was released and/or when Ashba joined.

There was no longer anything mysterious or interesting about them at that point.

Unfortunately it somehow got wrapped up into their "brand". The UYI wait and everything surrounding it really was exciting and mysterious.

So were the early 2000s.

I think a big reason it continued into the 2010s is the fact that a supposed aura of "mystery" was the perfect disguise for incompetent management.

Management stayed the same with the reunion. Live Nation does the heavy lifting with the touring juggernaut...and what's left is handled by GNR management. Obviously what's left after the touring isn't much. 16

We're damn lucky we're even getting a semi-annual release of singles. It could have so easily not even happened at all. Instead of the near constant touring that ran interest completely into the ground, they could've went away for 2-3 years and ticket sales never drop to the point they need something out there to get media interest.

It could've easily just been toy trucks and touring....

So you would rather remain with your head in the sand ?

It probably has more to do with wanting to discuss the actual songs that just leaked instead of who may or may not have songs and the drama surrounding Village Sessions discords.

It was always a niche group into that stuff (me included obviously) and that group is shrinking as we enter the final chapter.

Big part of what makes a song great is also the context it's hears in. When you hear it, how you hear it, how it's presented and also where you are at in your life.

Get all this music out closer to when it's written and it will all hit different.

The General frankly sounds really dated, I dig it but musically it's style is well ... early 00s. It's fun to listen to but it would have been enjoyed a lot better if it came out in 02-04.

Yeah this all would've went down so much better in my mid-late 20s. While none of it is really cruising type of music, I definitely would've been cruising down McHenry with these songs blaring.

Love em or hate em...in the 2020s these songs are verging on being novelties....

The deflated myth balloon, the dated nature of the material, the horrid production/mixing issues, the vibe that it's coming to an end, and the drip feed which doesn't even allow them to be taken in as a whole.

They couldn't compile these songs into an album without am entirely new mix being done. They are too all over the place. It would be the most abrasive record ever released.

Chinese Democracy should have been something like this

Here's mine...

Chinese Democracy
Better
IRS
Sorry
Madagascar
The General
Monsters
Riad
Catcher In The Rye
Arlas Shrugged
There Was A Time
If The World
Prostitute

I would probably remove Prostitute for Street of Dreams.

Then all the left over songs could have been the b sides of the CD singles

In 2002 onstage he said the album would be 18 tracks + 10 B sides.

That's exactly what it should've been. It would've wrapped it all up nice and neat with only a small handful of unheard songs remaining.

I'd expect maybe close to two years off unless they get a big offer for a festival. But I doubt they will as they hit many of them this year anyway.

Another option is that this is it. It's grim to think about but a lot can happen in two years. Hell they could even fall out again at some point for all we know.

We'll get the 7" and that Schenker song next year. Maybe that was a chance to just get Axl and Slash to work on something and "See how it goes". I believe they will try to do an album of new material but I doubt it will come to pass, I hope I'm wrong.

There are positive's from this year. We got a high quality level Pro shot in Glastonbury that makes the Heaven & Hell fest look like it was shot with a potato. We got Perhaps and a music video for it. A setlist that had songs nobody saw coming, leaks of The General & also Monsters and they played The General live which is not something I think anyone would have guessed at the start of the year.

It's not all bad.... However it's not all good either. Many who moaned about his voice in the CD era now yearn for it. My interest as always is in the studio material & I hope we hear more of it..

No matter how it occurs.

Yeah it is scary as a hardcore fan....

We're officially at the start of a hiatus...how long unknown and they won't tell us...which likely means another silent chapter.

If/when they come back in 2025 or 26, it will probably be a farewell tour which will coincide with two major events...40 year anniversary of the band and then AFD.

A farewell tour is unlikely to require new songs to help push it along.

Something about The General coming out has a different feel than the other releases. I have a feeling they are wrapping up the CD era and they gave us the two songs most hardcore fans wanted the most.

Like you said, anything is possible but all we're probably getting next year is the Schenker track. Since they love doing anniversaries a year late, maybe something with TSI although that's unlikely.

Unfortunately I don't really care about reunion era live stuff so anything released on that front won't float my boat.

I would love for that UYI Remix to get a release.

I guess we just pray for another drip of the Chinese feed or leaks.

The General is wacky. This song should not have been sat on for 20 years. It didn't warrant the hype it received but in all fairness to them, a lot of the hype for this specific song was generated by the fan base itself.

I'd like to hear it without the vocal effects... especially on that chorus.

In a way i guess we could blame Beltrami, it was he who spoke about it first on his forum in 2002/3 and then to IGN. I know we knew there was a song about child abuse but we didn't know what it was called back then. 20 fuckin years...jesus christ

Axl mentioning we'd heard it before... leading to the concert intro...gave fans a false representation of what the song was. Everyone was expecting that as an intro and/or to play throughout the song high in the mix.

wrong-we-were-so-wrong.gif

So far the only big gun that is not a major disappointment. Nothing can live up to hype, but this is a great song. On average I think the unreleased tracks are better than what we got on CD. What a disaster that album was.

I'd rank Monsters above it but yeah...while neither is mind blowing...they belonged on the album. He had to realize that a follow-up was nothing more than a pipe dream and he should've just went all in on the album instead of this leaks +3 crap the album was turned into.

Remove Scraped and one of the ballads. Insert these two. If not one of those, ditch Shackler or the god awful final version of Catcher.

Have any of the so called big guns ever been that great?

Unfortunately....no.

While I do enjoy some of the material obviously, the more time goes by and more songs we hear...I can see Ezrins point of view...and the label's.

If you look at the sessions as a whole, there's a really good album buried in it. It's not Dark Side of the Moon though..not even close. In Pink Floyd terms, it's much closer to something like Meddle without Echoes or Obscured By Clouds.

Here is the thing, hearing some of these songs it makes you wonder if the reason they have not leaked is bc they are not very good and the haorders dont want to give that away so they can keep making money off of them.

Possible.

I think they could make the same amount of money on these songs regardless of quality.

Having said that...the amount willing to pay has to be shrinking.

The two big enchiladas just came out of the oven and no one is raving on them like it's my grandma's turkey dressing.  It's more like my aunt's thick cut al dente french fries... kinda tasty but you need a lot of ketchup to wash it down.

#190 Re: Guns N' Roses » Justin Hawkins (The Darkness) reacting to the General » 85 weeks ago

I made it 8 minutes in.

He takes too long to get to the point... reading YouTube comments, picking up his guitar... randomness....I'm tired of these YouTube channels doing this. It's been very noticeable the past year or two. They do it because they only get money if the viewer watches a certain amount of time. A host/channel loses me when I spot the pattern.

Thanks for posting it though...I had to Google him because I forgot who in the hell Justin Hawkins is. Couldn't remember if he was a singer, guitarist, drummer....
