#181 Re: Guns N' Roses » GNR LP reissues coming soon? » 887 weeks ago

I'm usually a sound quality snob, but to be honest albums are just too much of a pain in the ass for me.  Worrying about scratches, having to flip sides, etc is too much work.  With lossless digital formats like FLAC these days and hard drives becoming cheaper and smaller to the point where you can have a whole collection of music on a portable device, even CDs are getting to be inconvenient.

Would be cool to have some albums for display/collection purposes though.

Damn.  Missed this thread with all the excitement lately.  I like a lot of the Van Hagar stuff (Dreams on 5150 is definitely a favorite), but The original VH with Dave is just a whole different beast.  Diamond Dave hands down for me.

By the way, I agree with James about Jump...it's not that good even though it was a big hit.  I think it was like the biggest song of that year, if not it was close.  House of Pain is my favorite from 1984, but I do like Panama, Drop Dead Legs and Girl Gone Bad.

I love House of Pain.  I'm also a big fan of Hot For Teacher.  A bit cheesy maybe, but it rocks.  Course that could just be cause I'm a drummer and Alex plays mean swing feel time in that with some wicked cool fills.

GNR is more like Dream Theatre now, which were heavily influenced by Rush.  So is GNR a modern day Rush?

Don't think so.  Rush has released a CD nearly every year for the past 30 years, except for the little understandable hiatus when Neil tragically lost both his wife and daughter.  In half that amount of time, we're still waiting for one album.

Though I could see a point made for having different sounds for different eras, and the new stuff does get a  little close to prog.

Sorry the mention of Rush triggered my Pavlovian urge to comment.  Nothing to see here...move along.

#185 Re: Guns N' Roses » Overall feelings on the CD era songs.... » 887 weeks ago

First of all, a few have taken some time to grow on me, but I really like all the stuff so far.  I'd definitely pull these up on my ipod before choosing a VR song.

Most of this discussion is about the guitars and instrumental work on these tracks, so this comment might very well get lost here, but I wanted to mention something about the vocals.  I love Axl's singing.  Now idea what it is, but something about that guy's voice and the way he sings just does it for me.  I think the guy could release a cover of Mary had a Little Lamb, and I'd find it interesting cause he's singing it. tongue

That said, I think these songs are lacking the "layered Axls" of the past.  Axl harmonizing with himself, and doing that thing he does with his high voice on one channel and the "demon axl" low voice on the other.  I always loved how that sounds and miss it on the new stuff.  I hope some of that will be in the final mixes.  Wouldn't mind some Axl "Ow"s and "Aiyai"s either.

I'm stuck at work right now, but I have tomorrow off. Honestly, even though I think they sound the same, I'll probably get to it tomorrow.

I always wonder why whoever leaks songs is always incompetent as far as getting a good rip. sad

That glitch in Better is annoying, but at the same time, I'm now feel something's missing without that stuttered half a beat at the end of The Blues. big_smile

The elementary school attack stunned Japan, which prides itself on its safety and moved to step up security at schools.

Sadly, this seems to be very much changing recently.  I'm reading more and more of these wacko type, random, "I was in a bad mood, so I decided to kill some people" kind of crimes here lately.  I think one of the major issues is that Japan pretty much ignores mental health altogether.  Many people that should be getting some consuling or maybe even drugs, don't get the treatment that they need.  Basically, there's a stigma against any kind of psychiatric help - if you're going to a psychiatrist, you're a nut-case and should be locked up.

Combine the lack of mental health care with a city that is way overcrowded, people that are insanely overworked, and a society that is growing more and more selfish and apathetic abotu fellow humans, and this is what you get.  I'm sure Japan is going to be seeing much more of this kind of thing in future. sad

Not a bad idea. Specifically when movies get discussed in detail.

We'll look into it. SMF isn't the only site that has the feature. I've seen it used at Invision forums as well.

Living in Japan where American movies and TV are released 6 months to a year behind, I'd love to have spoiler tags on this site.  There's been many times that I want to see what you guys are saying about movies and tv shows, but I'm afraid to open the thread and have something spoiled for me.
