efff VR, Slash needs to team up with Cantrell and get Corey Taylor to sing. Slash is basically a frontman at this point, so no need for the theatrical singer. Call it Alice Gunn or whatever, play a smattering of GNR/AIC/VR/Jerry Cantrell solo stuff/classic covers, make some amazing albums and tour the world til they die. People just want to rock & Corey Taylor is the man for the job right now.
Thing is, I think if Weiland wasn't there, VR could persuade Izzy back. Maybe not on tour, but in a songwriting/studio capacity. Velvet Revolver with an Axl-quality vocalist in Corey, Izzy writing and Kushner doing his nicely modern effects-driven noodling would be incredible to behold.
Plus, if they can get someone who actually has vocal range, they won't be limited to covering Mr Brownstone and It's So Easy on tour. Truth be told, I was getting a bit sick of them wheeling those two out over and over again...

One of the things I liked about Scott was that he brought a modern edge to the band - stopped them from just belting out AC/DC-esque hard rockers and gave them a bit of credibility. If VR had gone with, say, Sebastian Bach they wouldn't have had that. They face a hell of a tricky job - ideally they need someone who has the modern stylings of a Scott Weiland but the vocal range of an Axl Rose. Oh, and the new frontman needs to have charisma, songwriting ability and ideally an already-established fanbase (getting an unknown in is a bit Judas Priest). Of course, singers who have established fanbases tend to be occupied fronting big bands of their own - something which I suspect nixed the possibility of Chester Bennington joining the band.
Corey Taylor would be an ideal frontman for the band, though. I hope something comes of this. I suspect the chap that the band tried out who didn't work out was Royston Langdon - they seemed to be all set to work with him, and then he did that disastrous performance of It's So Easy with Camp Freddy.

All this factionalism among GN'R fans displeases me mightily. I appreciate Robin has strengths and weaknesses, just as Fortus, Bumble and Buckethead do. And they all add up to something marvelous.
Given how Axl's dragging his heels lately, I find myself vaguely wondering if they couldn't just dump him and find a new frontman. I dunno, get Bumblefoot to do the vocals, or (in an act of supreme irony) poach one of the Axl soundalikes that people are advocating as replacements for Weiland in Velvet Revolver. I like this band a lot, and I'd hate to see it go under because the singer's dicking around.

Yeah, he's got it. I was all for Chester Bennington, but Corey has the Axl voice down pat, and (like Chester) he's popular with the kids. Make This Happen, Velvet Revolver.

Actually the way TWAT is tabbed out Bucket's isn't all that hard. just a bit fast in places. And We're still trying to find a way to replicate the killswitch sound without butchering his guitar : /
The part he is having the most trouble with is the part around 5:56
and the crazyness at the very end
Just do what Ron does and rapid-pick the killswitch parts...

Axl will, tragically, expire while trying to reprise the "leaping off a tanker to swim with dolphins" stunt for the new, improved Better video.
Some bright spark at the record company will cull all Axl's vocal tracks from the unreleased songs, and get Slash, Izzy and Duff in to record new instrumental backing tracks. The resultant Made in Heaven-style album will sell millions.
Buckethead will release 1001 albums in a year, and, his work on Earth complete, will return to his home planet.

See, I didn't get into GN'R first time around. I was about 11 or 12 when UYI hit, and I just thought the lead singer was a shrieking twat; I much preferred Queen. And then the Freddie Mercury tribute concert happened, and I realised the shrieking twat was a raving Queen fan, and that he might be an okay guy after all. But I really got into them in about 1999, when Oh My God came out, and there was a lot of excitement about the new band - I was just intrigued by the concept of reinventing a band from the ground up, and sought out some of the old stuff to reappraise the shrieking twat. Found Civil War, was absolutely hooked, realised the shrieking twat was actually a bloody good singer/songwriter, and got properly excited when the Rio gig happened and we started hearing the new songs.
So really, I'm a fan of the new band in all its permutations. I think they missed a trick in 2002 - if Axl had trained up and got to his 2006-8 level of fitness and vocal ability in 2002, and released the album, Chinese Democracy would've been HUGE. But I don't begrudge the wait and the lineup changes, 'cause Bumblefoot improved every track with his contributions.
I hope Axl pulls it together and gets touring and recording again; I'm intrigued by what DJ can bring to the band, though I'm a proper Finck fanboy and feel he was a bit short-changed.
And I hope Velvet Revolver hook up with a singer with a decent set of pipes, so they can keep doing their thing, too - someone like Chester Bennington, who can belt out Paradise City and keep the old-school fans happy.

It's not that odd; certainly here in the UK the news shows get all sorts of people in to discuss the news. Usually, there's one political pundit and a mainstream guest - some sort of entertainer, musician or whatever. This sounds like pretty much the same thing!

99 IRS....notice the lead solo where Bucket's now is...sound familiar? I think it is Robin's solo on the final version. They just cut and paste Robin's in there for the 2008 leak version and the final CD version....unbelievable....recorded in 99.In any case, I like the drumming on these demos and the roughness of the songs.
Ah, the 1999 IRS. The one thing that I miss on the new version is Robin's fucking cool choppy rhythm guitar from 1:38 onwards. It's there in the album version, but inexplicably Axl's stuck an effect on top of it and buried it in the mix. Should've been left exactly as it was on the 1999 version... damn shame.

elevendayempire wrote:This is lovely and all, but when the fuck is someone going to leak The General?
Any basis for that question?
Just exasperation. The record's been out for a while now, and the leaks have dried up completely. We know there's more material out there, and I'm just wondering if the usual suspects have been digging around the hoarders, or if everyone's given up.
