btw all my claims above are speculation...i jsut wanna make it clear, and i dont wanna be misquoted or misunderstood
as for the "Slash trashed Axl publically for years" comment, i dont buy it, i dare anyone to drag up as many derogatory Axl comments from Slash as they can....there isnt many as you wanna beleive. if peopel post a bunch of example of Slash bashing Axl i'll humbly back down and apologise, but i've followed this band "forever and a day" and i honestly dont recall anything really scathing coming from slash
anyway i'm not on the Slash bandwagon right now, the thought just struck me and i thought it'd be somethign to discuss....a new take on an old topic so to speak...
an example in my own life....someone keeps calling me at work right, and every time its like "wadya want now" , then it becomes a bit of a comedy, then it really starts to annoy the hell outta me, its like fuck off already, on top of that if you have somebody in the other ear telling you how much of an idiot the guy it then it also increases agrivation....so (just theory again) say in one ear we got beavan/zutaut....they say, "Axl...ya know Robin/BH are pretty cool but did you ever think of calling Slash" and in the other ear you got Beta/Del saying God Slash is a fucking prick, remember the time..." eventually you are gonna reach your breaking point and say...."fuck you and fuck Slash, hes a damn cancer" or somethign...know what i mean?
anyway again yeah its just speculation....the vicious animosity that Axl seems to have for Slash is a bit mind boggling to me
I'm not trying to avoid your question, just don't have time to dig up the articles right now, but to me it's not so much that what Slash said was insidious on the surface, but that he told blatant, flat out lies with the sole purpose of making himself look like the good guy and Axl appear to be the only cause of the breakup which the general public bought
Two examples are his claims that Axl wanted to make a techno album, wanted to sound like Pearl Jam, was treating Guns like his solo project, etc. It is also worth noting that Sorum stated that Duff and Axl were both on one side of the fence and the rest of the band was on the other, while Slash was trying to make it out that it was Axl alone. Later on in his book he said that creative differences in regards to musical direction had nothing to do with the breakup, but that's not what he said from 1995-2004.
The next example is his blackmail claim regarding the name. Axl pointed it out and anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of business law understands that a contract signed under circumstances like that is voidable. In civil law, it is not innocent until proven guilty, it is preponderance of evidence, which means that each side states their case and whichever side is more than 50% correct wins. In this case, if Axl had blackmailed the others into signing over the name and it was a he said-she said thing, and four people were claiming that it was signed under duress while one person was claiming otherwise, the contract would be voidable. Obviously there was more evidence than that, and it favored Axl, which means there were likely witnesses and other people who knew the true nature of the contract. Therefore it becomes apparent that Slash was lying about a story that has done a tremendous amount of damage to Axl's rep over the year and has been accepted as fact by the general public
Slash proved himself to be a liar with the infamous visit to Axl's house incident, which went from "I never went to his house" to "I went there to talk about a lawsuit" to "I went there to apologize for how things turned out" in a matter of months. Maybe not directly related but nonetheless shows how he has no problem lying to save face and make himself look better but in this case he got caught up in his own lies

The story of Axl blackmailing him and Duff into signing over the name for example. It is pretty clear that this isn't what happened, but it doesn't matter. Slash said it and the general public believed it. To this day a large percentage of the general public still thinks that Axl forced them to sign over the name and kicked everyone else out of the band
Yeah, I think for better or worse most people think it's Axl's fault the old lineup broke up. Even if some actually believe THAT story, they still blame Axl one way or another. Fact is, I'm sure it took all parties involved. But you're right, in the general public's eye, Axl gets the bad rap for the whole thing. Slash is just a more likeable and more available guy, so I guess he's easier to believe. Even though he's not as innocent as he may claim to be.
Yeah and I think that is why Axl's animosity exists. Some irritation that Slash is more adept at playing the PR/press game, and that Slash did in fact appear to go out of his way to destroy Axl's reputation publicly for several years with the stuff he said about him both in terms of breaking up Guns and as a person. Axl has sad that he was very hurt and upset when Slash left GNR and I imagine Slash's behavior in terms of what he said to the press following his departure is unforgivable in Axl's eyes. Axl has always been a polarizing and controversial figure and there's no question that Slash caused significant and probably irrepairable damage to his reputation
Although I'm sure that people saying that he should get back with Slash is very aggravating and is the cause of his recent comments (trying to make it clear in no uncertain terms that he is not going to work with Slash again), the root of the problem is pretty obvious at least to me, that being Slash's departure from GUns and subsequent behavior

There Was A Time
I love the lyrics, and the final 4 minutes is to me the best thing GnR has ever done musically. Axl's vocals are amazing there too
If I had to do a Top 5 it would be
There Was A Time

Will never understand all the hate this guy gets from the nutswingers. I chalk it up to mainly young fans who never experienced the real band.
There's just no way you can be a GNR fan and hate Slash. Dislike some of his post GNR material? Nothing wrong with that, but to say some of the tripe that gets posted at these sites is just unreal.
To be fair, I think Axl gets a lot more hate from Slash nutswingers overall than Slash does from Axl nutswingers. To me the majority of the "hate" Slash receives from Axl nutswingers is backlash regarding years of horseshit from certain people

I'd say Axl has good chemistry with everyone in the band, but not all band members have had good chemistry
For example I'd love to hear an album strictly composed by Axl, Bucket and Pitman
I'd also love to hear one composed strictly by Axl, Ron and Stinson
They'd be totally different albums, but I believe both would be very cool, and there is great chemistry between those people. But there have been indications that guys like Bucket and Robin and Stinson didn't get along. Too many chefs, that sort of thing
#17 Re: Guns N' Roses » Is the Van Halen tour a lesson to Axl? » 848 weeks ago
the problem wasn't a lack of vision. it was axl never being around.
I agree with most of your comments war. Axl did have a vision; it was to move GNR forward into the new millenium past the musical style favored by Slash and others. That is why he hired Robin Finck, Buckethead, and added another synth guy in Pittman. The main problem here was the lack of execution. From the simple task of introducing the new members to the public where they would not be seen as a old GNR cover band to the recording of the album in a reasonable time period, they failed miserably. It was a lack of leadership that doomed this era.
I think some of the blame has to go to Doug Goldstein and Merck. They did nothing to further the recording process--I think this is more true for Goldstein. It seemed like whenever there was some sort of minor problem--ie. the stuff with the drum sounds--those things would take forever to fix and doom the making of the album. What GNR needed was a kick ass guy who could get things done and at the same time convince Axl that the world wasn't falling apart when there were problems in the process. It's a shame that Tom Zutaut got booted in 2002 since it appeared that he had made significant progress in allaying Axl's worries about the album and progressing towards it's long awaited release.
I'm real interested in seeing if Irving Azoff can coax any new material out of Axl. Axl seems to trust him and he is a guy that gets stuff done (reunited Eagles album, reunited VH w/ Dave and allegedly an album in the future).
Nice post. There's a solid amount of evidence that in 1997, desperate Geffen execs handed out a $10 million advance when Axl didn't really want to make music, which was evidenced by the story Youth told about Axl telling him he was moving too fast. For years there was money being spent with no oversight or supervision. Management apparently rejected some version of the album in 1999 or 2000, because the people who handed out the advance in 1997 were let go in 1998 when Polygram got swallowed by Interscope. There's plenty of blame going around but to say Axl had no vision is not necessarily true, seems more a case of trying to figure out how to realize the vision and getting the right people in place to do so, and trying to balance the desire to do something new (in the context of GnR) without straying too far from the brand
#18 Re: Guns N' Roses » DJ Ashba First Impressions » 848 weeks ago
I'm indifferent to it all. He can hire Jim Nabors or even dig up the corpse of Boss Hogg for all I care. He wasted the potential of the best lineup he had, so it doesn't really matter anymore who he picks to tour. We already know its not gonna sound like the album, so just let him pick whoever he wants.
I'm just hoping for more of that 2001-02 material to be released at some point.
The 2002 lineup was a beast. I said this a while ago but I think that if Bucket had come aboard in 1997 instead of 2000 things would've turned out much differently. I think it's pretty apparent that Robin just didn't have the chops as a player or writer to be "The Man" in GnR, although as a part of the supporting cast he could be a great contributor
The dynamics of the band, when Robin rejoined after Bucket had joined, were probably pretty weird. Buckethead is 20 times the guitarist Robin is but they had to share the co-lead guitarist role
#19 Re: Guns N' Roses » DJ Ashba First Impressions » 848 weeks ago
Somewhere between indifferent and good. I love what Robin did on CD but DJ will probably handle the old Guns stuff better than Robin and these guys are all more than capable of playing his stuff on CD
The only guitarist move at this point that would get me overly excited is the return of Bucket which is never going to happen. To me Ron and Fortus are good enough on their own to handle the guitar duties and both better players than Robin in a live setting although Robin has a certain charisma and mojo on stage that is very cool in person. Ashba will fit in fine, he's certainly not going to hurt the live performance any, he can play and loves GnR
