#191 Re: Guns N' Roses » Slash confirms “one or two” new songs by June » 174 weeks ago
Why, in God’s name, would anybody think they would re-release Oh My God?
1.It was redone in 2006 along with the BBF Silkworms. Absurd is basically the BBF Silkworms with a couple of Slash licks pasted in, so it's something they could do without much work.
2.It was on the leaked 2008 CD 2 list.
3.There was a glimpse from a soundcheck I think of a video behind had the band with lyrics from OMG, so this means the band have made a concert video for it.

My guess: reworked OMG & Atlas.

Guns N’ Roses recently released “Absurd” and “Hard Skool” — your first songs with the band in more than 25 years. How do you know when a song is ready to come out?
“Hard Skool,” in essence, was a completed song when I was first introduced to it. And Duff and I went in and redid the bass and the guitars. It’s a simple song, so it didn’t take a hell of a lot of thought and analysis. I think it was a lot of fun just because it was part and parcel of a bunch of stuff that we were working on that was all sort of new — at least to Duff and I — so we had a good time. There’s a bunch of new stuff also coming, maybe a little bit more complex, but it’s just as much fun.
Does that mean there’s a new album coming?
I know we’ve got some songs and we’re releasing another one at some point soon, and there’ll be another one after that. As far as the record is concerned, that remains to be seen as far as a whole package, but I feel pretty confident that at some point down the road, there will be.

What's going on with John Bonham's forum? Please PM anyone from that community
The GNFNR Twitter account said "we are coming back", so I assume whatever it is it's temporary.

He doesn't really care anymore. That's been the problem for many years.
The muse is gone.
He's willing to do the nostalgia thing because it's massive money performing in front of huge crowds that requires zero effort in a creative sense.
If something happened and it becomes half empty arena syndrome and people start expecting something (on a large scale), it'll be the mid 2000s all over again.
He'll go home.
One of the problems with such a scenario is his age. He doesn't have the luxury of another silent period in him. If he retreats again, it's the final retreat.
I agree he doesn't care, but when he started playing Absurd back in August it was the most animated and motivated I've seen him on stage since AC/DC in 2016, and the most with GNR since 2010. It seems he really does still get enthusiastic about playing new material. Maybe the problem is he can't really sing most of it well, which is why he didn't debut Hard Skool until the end of the tour. Hard to get enthusiastic about singing The General or attempting the chorus to Perhaps if his focus is on not embarrassing himself.

I fully expect Atlas/reworked OMG.

On the other tracks it sounded like they just muted the old guitars and recorded slash over - which while cool isn't as much as I would like to see Slash do on some of the others. Like Atlas to me was the basis of a really cool song - but it's current structure without anything else it sort of went no-where - it was a bit like if we'd heard estranged with no slash guitars. What I'd like to see is slash add stuff to them properly...like add in a new guitar melody to go with the verses or a new bridge or something but I think the nature of this project (keeping most of the existing instruments etc) means we won't see too much of that.
Some of the songs like State of Grace I think will be great to have finished though.
I guess i'm saying i'm fine that they're doing CD2 songs, by wish is that it was more collaborative creatively - but from the last batch it was more like Slash and Duff took a finished song, and just covered the bass/guitar parts and left it otherwise.
I'm not sure that's entirely fair. I mean, with Hard Skool they clearly stripped out the extended intro and rejigged the structure, and I'm prepared to bet that was all Duff ("Why is there a minute of guitar noodling at the start? Drum crash, bass line, off we go.").
We don't know for sure that's Slash/Duff's work or just a later NuGuns version of Hardschool. If BBF's Absurd hadn't leaked in 2018 we would have had no idea Slash didn't write the new riff.

Since I have little to no hope for a new album, bring on the UYI box.
I tried listening to Absurd and Hard Skool again today. Both are beyond mediocre. If they represent the new new Gnr’s idea of what should be released to the public, then I will pass on purchasing any new album.
The Hard Skool demo from 20 years had a better vocal mix. Obviously sycophant Caram is still behind the wheel. Slash obviously isn't inspired to write around someone else's songs but I thought his leads were OK.

A year later... just like AFD.
TSI box/deluxe edition in 2024?!?
My interest will hinge on its tracklist.
Yes....Ritz 91 is a huge selling point...even better would be the Warfield warm-up show on the Here Today...Gone to Hell mini tour. Always regretted not going to that show.
I don't think I ever heard the Vegas show. If memory serves me correctly, only 89 show I ever owned was the 'Stoned in LA' bootleg. If these are the only live shows....not bad at all.
The million dollar question....
What pads out the rest of the set? Do they go all in or is it limited in scope? It could go either way. Other major bands like Pink Floyd have went in both directions for various box sets.
In the case of GNR, it really needs certain things if they want hardcores gobbling this up...
- The rough mixes Slash raved on for years.
- The AFD-UYI Holy Grail....YCBM demo
I'm cautiously optimistic.
Others have speculated it's Vegas 1992 and Slash got the year wrong.

Slash: "It got delayed by the pandemic, but it is coming out I think this summer. There's a bunch of cool live stuff on it". Confirms Ritz 1991 and Vegas 1989.
