#211 Re: Guns N' Roses » Musician's comment on Guns N Roses/Chinese Democracy » 865 weeks ago

Chinese Democracy wasn't going to change the music world... it's an album about Axl Rose's life with the media/fans/old bandmates/girlfriend. It's really built for Axlphiles to begin with, and others can enjoy it. Axl himself basically said "you'll like a track or two on there" or something in a review years ago.

The difference is people need to have things bashed into their brains and they're not doing it. It would have been better received back then, but that's neither here nor there in terms of the release right now. I don't think anyone really sits around pissed off that Axl got the GNR name, not normal people anyways. Like the "Chinese Democracy took 15 years" comment, there'll always be the "Axl's the only one left" thing, but if it's good and promoted, they will come.

I think people would have been more forgiving if he'd have done some press. That's what it all boils down to.

What I like the most about this VR vs GNR thing is now it gets its first dose of reality. For years we've heard the nutswingers say how CD will destroy everything VR did sales wise, critically, awards, etc. Now all of a sudden none of that matters. If this album was flying off the shelves, it would still matter to them. Now they just have a bunch of excuses.

Too funny.

VR sucks in my opinion. The only way I can even listen to them is by condensing the only songs I like into an EP....

Slither
Fall to Pieces
Psycho Killer
SBQM
Messages

The rest is garbage.

I can give most anything on Contraband a listen, but I only go out of my way for:

Dirty Little Thing
Slither
Fall to Pieces
She Builds Quick Machines
Loving the Alien
Set Me Free
Surrender (Cheap Trick cover bonus track, just thought I'd throw it out there)

Weiland's not my kind of singer (and at times, lyricist), that's my only real beef with Contraband's sound.

Axl, if you're reading this, I love you dogg. Let's do a rap album.

Peace.

Yeah, it's another one of those "people today don't care about quality" posts when people do care about quality, idiots and 14 year-olds don't. The trick is to get the idiots on board with you. It's not like the 80s (or any other decade) didn't have its share of crap  purchased because of name sake and popularity/appearance. The 00s have taken a disturbingly terrible decline in quality compared to anything else, though.

The true comment I was referring to was the fact that with more promotion and the overall quality of the songs, the album could have been a lot bigger. I'm sure you would agree.

People are just pissed off that Slash, as he said in the book "would rather not deal with the bullshit of being in Guns N' Roses than be in Guns N' Roses".

Most threads on here has the guys coming back to Axl on their knees like he's some sort of savior. Most people here post about the band being distinctively different and the opposing views and restrictions pulling at one another created the sonic bliss we all enjoy. Then reunion talks come up and suddenly the guys all have to go back and live in Axl's world. I sometimes ponder if these fans are living in the same fairy land Axl is. But, hey, it's a relevant argument because I like Axl and thus whatever works for Axl has to work for everyone else or they are wrong.

I like CD better than Contraband by far.

It's not about a winner, it's about the way people go about expressing their opinions. There's nothing subjective about treating ideals fairly and if VR's sales were based on curiosity like so many say, the same would have to be said about GNR's eerily similar projected sales. Either that or they literally gained no new fans and just old Gunner fans bought it.

#218 Re: Guns N' Roses » IF CD doesnt outdo Contraband » 865 weeks ago

I'm not really looking to see a benchmark at all. I just don't think the double standards all the time are healthy. It just seems that anything Slash accomplishes always has some piss poor excuse and yet Chinese Democracy can sell 300k (supposedly) and now opinions have twisted. Thing is CD and Contraband are such vastly different albums it's silly to compare them. I'm just working on a sort of baseline from point A to point B and how some people just make up their own path when it's convenient.

I didn't like Libertad at all, either.

#219 Re: Guns N' Roses » IF CD doesnt outdo Contraband » 865 weeks ago

But, bri... not saying it's you, but people won't shut up about Libertad flopping and said VR got all their sales out of curiosity. Now CD flops and it's about the art. Well, Libertad was pretty personal to Weiland (was it not?), but he can't flop and GNR can? It's dirty pool all around. I hate when people are inconsistent when a new idea suddenly becomes more convenient for them to agree with. It's proven time and time again in the GNR world, mostly by anti-Slash guys who say he's never branched out (and he fucking has) because he doesn't think he's in NIN. When he does branch out, he's insulted.

Contraband was a good album, I don't like the vocals 1/2 the time, but it was. That's why it sold that many.

Yeah, the only good thing to come from a potential failure of the album is the fact that blind Axl supporters can be laughed at now more than ever.
