Given Ali likes the clean tone best, and prefers the feel of the 2012 wobbling pitch displayed during last night's rendition of "better" over the cold cutting sharp anger of a 2009 Axl...I can only hope that he'll report that the gig sounded bad...as to the rest of us...that will mean Axl's back!

Please do not put words in my mouth. Yes on the first part, but the 2nd part is complete and utter fabrication you're attributing to me. I never said anything about preferring "wobbling pitch".

I find it consistent with what he has put out in the last few years.

High on helium, short on rasp.

I'm not going to defend all posters, but many, including myself, come back to post when the band actually does something.

Fair enough. I don't have the attachment to the raspy tone some do, so it's not as big a deal for me that he doesn't use that tone now.

Agreed. I don't think it was the best show by any means. All I was trying to point out that if you were to do what I did, which is observe the reactions of those in attendance with and around you, and those on the forums, it was a stark contrast.

It does not matter how good your range IS or WAS, you can have someone with little vocal range sound BETTER than someone that has a better vocal range.

Just take eddie vedder and axl tonight.
Axl has a much bigger vocal range yet eddie vedder sounded better.

Axl has  a better vocal range than Mark Foster from Foster the people but Mark blows Axl out of the water when it comes to singing.

You have no clue what you're saying when you say range has nothing to do with singing.

Ali

You have no clue, Adele is a way better singer than axl, and Axls range is way more than hers (Axl is like what 4 maybe 5 vs Adele being a 3).  Adele is one of the best singers in the world and doesnt have the range of Axl.

You have no clue.

I understand the distinction between range and vocal tone or quality. I'm not arguing that. But, to say that range has nothing to do with singing, when it is something that can be broadened with vocal exercises, i.e. singing, is absurd.

WAIT. WHAT'S THAT?? Someone at a GN'R show thought it was better than a bunch of people on the internet hoping and wishing for failure??

Good for you. I'm glad you and those around you had fun! 9

Yeah, it's actually astonishing the contrast. I think some people just have a tremendous attachment to the raspy vocal tone and if he doesn't use it, he sounds like shit.

Roll on tomorrow.

Axl doesnt even need his upper register for most of the stuff he played tonight and he was still terrible.

You clearly know nothing about singing if you think vocal range has nothing to do with singing. It's something that can be developed through training.

Steven Tyler can sing higher than axl but axl can go lower.
Axls mid range sucks now, while tylers when he was 50 was still very good

i dont agree.

tylers natural range is higher
axls natural range is lower

they are different types of voices

axl used to reach the notes tyler still does and had a larger range

but tyler never could reach the lower notes

age, care, etc are all given as reasons for that but dont make a difference for....

the fact remains axl has lost that upper range

you can say tyler is better in the long run and ur half right

lower degree of difficulty and ability but tyler is better off because he can still sing his own material properly

vocal range has NOTHING to do with singing or how good you sound. Axl cant even sing low anymore as well, his lower register is awful.

Today is day one. I plan on getting there early to see what merch they have. Looking forward to this unique GN'R show experience. This will be the 7th different city I've seen GN'R in.

Ali

Right on, right on.

I'll PM you my cell # for tomorrow in case you want to send any pics and updates.

I can't make clear enough that you are in no way expected to do so. I'f rather you just enjoy the show, but if you're so inclined, you're welcome to shoot me whatever you want.

And faldor;

I'm wondering the same thing. We're having a vinyl party at my house tonight that doesn't even start til 8 so I'm thinking I'll make it. I'll still donate my $5 anyway, but I may end up seeing it on YouTube or when gibbo supplies us with the awesome DVD he'll make of it. smile

Thanks Russ. I am happy to provide updates tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

At the venue now. No GN'R specific merch on sale. Got a show t-shirt and a small poster.

Saw a flyer with start times posted for all the acts. It said GN'R is playing at 10 pm local time, next to last, before Neil Young and Crazy Horse.
