Mission Accomplished

As for the other album...

"I know Axl was very serious about putting something out before Christmas. He was talking to me about it. He was talking about finishing liner notes. I don't know what happened." (Baz, Rock My Monkey, 12/02/07)

One possibility were the new release plan negotiations.

"[Best Buy's senior entertainment officer, Gary] Arnold says he began negotiating for the exclusive rights to sell Chinese Democracy more than a year ago." (LA Times, 11/20/08)

"About 60 people lost their jobs at Interscope and Geffen Records on Thursday when both labels merged into one. According to sources, a budget of $18 million was spent in making and promoting the Will.I.Am, Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Doll) and Eve albums - all were bombs and two aren't even out yet." (Kings of A&R, 12/17/06)

"'The album was completed before Christmas,' [Beta] says, 'but everyone knows that. We're in negotiations now with the record company...'"  (Classic Rock, 02/08)

A new GNR studio album had been in the works ever since Slash began recording his Snakepit demos fourteen years prior. The project had since then outlasted its originally intended record company twice.

I'm not surprised Paul Cashmere would serve as the middleman (and the story's legit, James, they're merely responding via Cashmere rather than their own website).

Trust me, the guy's been setting himself up as the next Kurt Loder for years now. In order to get real info out of GNR, one has to tell the right stories. Cashmere's been doing this for a good while now, he was on the money back in 2002 and got the exclusive on the proposed Labour Day release back then.

He's been playing that game long enough now to know not to falter in the finishing line.

Various reports

Best Buy and Geffen Records announced that one of the most highly anticipated albums of all time, Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy, will be available beginning Nov. 23 at Best Buy and BestBuy.com on CD, vinyl, and digital downloads. The title track, the first single from the album, was released to radio today, October 22. Chinese Democracy is the first album of new material from one of rock's most influential bands since the 1991 simultaneous releases of Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II.

[...] Produced by Axl Rose and Caram Costanzo, the album, which will be released on Black Frog/Geffen Records, includes 14 tracks. 'Shackler's Revenge'  debuted September 14 through the Rock Band 2 videogame and 'If The World'  can be heard in the film Body Of Lies, which premiered on October 11.

Chinese Democracy is being released in three formats: CD, Vinyl LP (with a free digital download of the tracks), and as a digital album. - Rolling Stone, 10/22/08

The title track from Guns N' Roses' new album, "Chinese Democracy," will be available to download by U.S. radio outlets at 5 a.m. ET tomorrow morning (Oct. 22). Although some album tracks leaked this summer, this is the first authorized new music from the group in nine years. - Billboard, 10/21/08

Chinese Democracy, the album Axl Rose has labored over for more than a decade, will finally hit stores on Sunday, November 23rd (a departure from the normal Tuesday record release day). The album will be sold exclusively in Best Buy stores and online at Bestbuy.com and iTunes. A music video is in the works, and the band '” in which Rose is the only remaining original member '” is expected to tour in 2009, according to a source close to G N' R. - Rolling Stone, 10/17/08

Guns N' Roses' long-awaited Chinese Democracy album on Geffen/ Interscope finally has a release date. The album will hit all Best Buy stores, where it is an exclusive, on the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving, Nov. 23, giving it a full seven days on sale before entering the chart on Dec. 2. Best Buy's sales week runs from Sunday through Saturday night. - Hits Daily Double, 10/08/08

Best Buy is set to be the exclusive retailer for Guns N' Roses decade-plus-in-the-making new album "Chinese Democracy" before year's end, sources close to the situation tell Billboard. Some details of the deal are still being worked out, including the release date. - Billboard, 09/26/08

Today at the Best Buy media holiday kickoff event in Dallas, TX, it was apparently announced that the Best Buy exclusive release was official! The deal was done within the last 48 hrs.

GNR management was on hand, (Azoff or Gould, apparently an English man) they played the group three songs, Chinese Democracy and two others. [The songs were later confirmed as CD, If the World and There Was A Time, with Andy Gould representing GNR management at the event. An audio recording has also surfaced.]

But management stated one song would play for the credit roll in the new Di Caprio flick Body of Lies [The film will open wide stateside on 10/10/08. Del James has confirmed that a GNR track is included.]. The album will be released on Nov 25, only at Best Buy. - MyGNR, 09/25/08

[Shackler's Revenge on Rock Band 2] is the beginning of what is expected to be a series of announcements about Guns '˜N Roses, the main point being that the album will be finally released and before Christmas.

[...] By getting the album out in November, Guns '˜N Roses will have a chance to claw back some of the control of the distribution [in response to the recent leaks] and finally put this long overdue release in the hands of the fans. - Undercover Press, 09/13/08

I hear that the deal with Best Buy is 99% done. The plan is for Best Buy to have an exclusive on Chinese Democracy, which will be released the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. - CD Blog, 09/01/08

A little birdie told me the deal with Best Buy is done.  All that's left to do is sign the contract. - Bob Lefsetz, 08/31/08

Even Guns n' Roses' Chinese Democracy has a chance: A source tells Rolling Stone that a November release date has been selected in case the band decides to put it out. - RS, 08/28/08

the current intended release date for CHINESE DEMOCRACY is november 25, 2008. it is azoff's strong preference that the release be done through best buy and not wal-mart. [...] i was also told that the story was leaked by azoff to put pressure on best buy to up their offer and close the deal. - MSL, 08/19/08

According to sources, negotiations are underway for "Chinese Democracy" to come out as an exclusive at one of the big boxes -- either Wal-Mart or Best Buy. Negotiations are also ongoing to have conventional record company distribution, another source says. - Billboard, 08/15/08

Currently, this thread is for viewing only, as we have more than one discussion on the subject already.

Tom Zutaut, who is the actual originator of the psychic-mumbo-jumbo-sharon-maynard-yoda-crap information?

Actually, Peter Wilkinson of Rolling Stone was the first to disclose the Sharon Maynard connection back in 2000.

During a 1992 GN'R swing through the US with Metallica, Yoda apparently became concerned about energy fields around Minneapolis and ordered that a date contemplated for the city not be booked. It was later rescheduled for a different Minneapolis venue. "Axl had trouble," a tour regular says, "in areas of the country that had a strong magnetic field concentration."

Before some dates in Japan, presumably at Yoda's urging, information about atomic power sources in the country and power sources for the Tokyo dome had to be collected. A source involved in this mission says he never understood precisely what this data was used for. "It was something about the magnetic forces that exist in the universe and where those things are in comparison to where Axl would be spending his time."

[...] While it is customary for tour employees to submit a photograph for a laminated pass, with Axl other things seemed to come into play. Doug Goldstein is said to gather photos at the singer's instruction for psychic assessment. In Sedona, some think, Yoda would examine these photos. What does so-and-so want out of Axl? Does this person have his best interests in mind? What kind of energy do they emit?

Submitting a photo to Axl for evaluation by Yoda, some say, coincided with employment in the GN'R world. Band members, crew members, record-company executives - everybody did it. The procedure still goes on. Recalls one current employee, "I sent my picture in. Everybody gets a photo made for a pass. People made jokes about auras being read. What's this for? Nobody really knew. But I don't know anybody who got canned for anything other than not doing a good job." On occasion, according to a music-industry figure Axl recently worked with, Yoda even requests photographs of the sons and daughters of people in Axl's world. - RS, 2000

Yoda was around since at least 1992 and is credited in the UYI liner notes. Whatever her influence over Axl was, their relationship lasted for no less than a decade.

Lefsetz used to work in Sanctuary's American division, in a rather high position, I gather. As Sanctuary's now rolled into Universal, there you could have his little birdies as well.

#237 Re: The Sunset Strip » Biggest Horror Icon » 877 weeks ago

I'd argue Friday the 13th was always strictly American pop mythology, and never got as much wind outside that market. What hampers the notably better European run of Michael Myers is the fact that Halloween has worn out its past significance in the local calendar, thus giving up some of the impact and lore. Still, the Shatner mask makes a lasting impression and he's the archetype in the illustrations of a psycho-killer in a many horror film study I've seen as of late. The Nick Castle Myers' got finesse, making the Voorhees character look like a doorman who'd wandered out of some bachelor party. In comparison, Jason's very crude and blue collarish; the makeshift murderer instead of the blank spot in the human psyche - then again, as far as appearances are concerned, by Halloween 4 I failed to notice any major difference.

As for Freddy, dreams are universal and whom amongst us aren't occasionally startled by a vivid nightmare? That makes him a frontrunner but what harms him, however, is that they never manage to make Krugerman live up to his potential (or shall we say, expectations). What we're dealing with here is the monster who preys on ones deepest, most disturbed fears and phobias - with teenagers, he should be all over their blooming sexuality. Tongue in the phone doesn't quite cut it, while a valiant effort it may be. Then again, we got the Channard Cenobite luring the 17-year old Imogen Boorman with cocks for limbs in Hellraiser II, which puts that into perspective - particularly when coming from otherwise oh-so-correct Brits.

I'll go with Alien.

Read any Ellroy?

I remember you've been into true-crime. Ellroy's Black Dahlia, the fictionalized account of the Elizabeth Short case, is nothing but amazing. The film is equally terrifying as the novel is harrowing, albeit for completely different reasons.

#239 Re: The Sunset Strip » L.A. CONFIDENTIAL TOPS BEST LOS ANGELES MOVIES » 877 weeks ago

I used to really, really dig the film.

Then I made the mistake of reading James Ellroy's original novel, which blew away a good chunk of respect I had for the film adaptation's narrative. What had originally seemed to me as wonderfully fluent and seamless mystery now appeared as a distilled and heavily chopped down version of the original storyline.

For instance, the character of Inez Soto (the rape victim Bud White saves) was a central figure in the novel, while in the film she's practically forgotten after being discovered. Also, the 'Rollo Tomasi' plot device never appears in the novel, making it a rather brilliant inclusion by the screenwriters on its own right, but also a necessity to tie up loose ends and make the story run faster.

Don't get me wrong, the one major gripe I developed for the film after reading the novel was that I wanted to see the whole thing as a miniseries or something; they nailed the LA looks and had a stellar cast - I would've killed to see them do the entire storyline.
