Mostly. But a little change in the setlist, maybe even with the same songs in a different order would help. A little. But as long as they're playing these mechanic setlists, it's not more than a well-paid, boring job. Artists would never do this.
@the 'best possible setlist' argument. Same old song and dance. When they'd been playing the usual setlist back in 2002, the Axlists glorified that as the best possible way that'd be stupid to change. When they played a different, yet monotonic set in 2006, then suddenly that was the perfect mix and order. Then came 2009 and had some surprise shows, constantly changed sets (for a few weeks) and everybody was happy with that. Everybody, even the so-called 'naysayers'. It's not true that he cannot please GN'R fans. Now we're back in the setlist boredom, and there are still people, the same people, who try to convince the rest of the world that it's perfect as it is.
No. F. Way. It's not perfect. It's lazy. Axl 'I don't work for you' Rose can't take his precious time to rehearse some new or old tunes. Maybe GTA or NFL or NBA is much more interesting, but he needs to do some touring to pay his bills. Good for him, it still can be a kickass show on his good day. But please, at least you, fans don't try to justify his laziness.
I agree with you.
It's tough to say that lazy is the word. I really don't know what the thought process is in that camp.
Maybe they need to keep playing the same songs to appear to be a well oiled machine of a rock band.
I had to giggle at a comment that NYC had not heard 4-5 songs. LOL. Didn't this band play Camden? Do we need to make a density plot of the US to find out what songs haven't been heard live town by town? Come on, now. That's just plain silly. And, if that is the band's thinking, they are milking the old catalog for every last cent.

Of course there isn't. Some people will never be satisfied, or it will be impossible to satisfy all people. It's a no-win situation all in all.
Ali
That is a pretty simplistic generalization. I love ya Ali, but you are better than this.
Clearly, there is a lot Axl can do to make the fanbase happy. However, no movement to the future and a recycled setlist isn't the answer.

Spot on. Wasn't this time supposed to be used for the new album?
Why re-visit a tour that already has been played on every continent.....some, in fact, twice.....with the same setlist?

I never said everyone is watching these streams. But clearly the arena shows were not selling out. In the case of the fanbase, their attendance becomes much more important when the rest of the nation fails to show up.
G&R have been exclusively playing these hits since 2001. I don't know if you are sincerely going to argue that they can get away with a nostalgia tour every four or so years, but I certainly will argue that the band will continue to be in stasis mode, selling 6000 tickets or less per venue if this trend continues.
I think you truly underestimate the effect a new song can have on a tour. Especially a good one. Especially one tied to a movie and a single. Most bands tour on something, and not simply the past. G&R seem to feel different. Perhaps that is why their numbers have been so poor. Look at what Van Halen is doing right now. Hell, even AC DC back when whispers of Chinese were in the air. It is possible to sell out based on a few decent new tracks and a solid catalog.
Well, my panties are in a bunch b/c Axl doesn't have another 20 years to figure this out. He is approaching the twilight of his career yet we have exactly one album of material since the old band busted. Tours like this keep the porchlight on, produce poor attendance numbers, and pay salaried band members. And not much else unless you like to hear this band wail through Appetite's greatest hits yet again.

Not on this tour they didn't. The settlement with Azoff assured that.
This may come as a surprise, but word of mouth plays a lot into generating interest. It is an antiquated notion that a single show doesn't affect those who are not attending. They actually affect attendance at future shows and the interest of the fanbase. News travels fast on the interweb, especially as setlists are parsed the morning after. Is it worth getting home at 4am on a workday to see the same show you saw already?
Personally, I can attest to quite a few old G&R fans who went to shows in 06/07 who stayed away this year simply b/c there wasn't much new in the offering. There are others who saw one show but were not attracted to going again b/c of the lack of variability. Perhaps this sample size is small, but it could be an endemic problem with what is going on. A rudderless ship touring for some reason unknown to the band, the fanbase, and the audience.

It'll never be enough for all parties involved. You can't possibly please everyone. Fact is, this band is so far behind the 8 ball, and have so much to make up for that there's no way they can win some people back. Even if they start playing new songs and release a new album, there'll be people complaining that we were supposed to have THREE albums by 2012.
I get the frustration, things have operated at a snails pace with this band, so it's understandable. I don't fully understand why people seem so upset with the way things are going, yet they keep following the saga. I guess their hearts are in the right place and they're hopeful, but the disappointments continue to pile up for them in the meantime.
I don't buy this, if you don't like it, get off the boat argument.
Yes, smaller intimate shows are better for this unit. Not b/c of fan clamoring, but b/c of the 6500 people showing up to these arena shows.
Second, just showing up and replaying the same show over and over and over is boring. They have been working this setlist since South America. Is it really so hard to change it around a little bit? Too hard to play a different cover? Too hard to play a new song? I just don't get the need to continue playing the same setlist three nights in a row in NYC. U2 never does that.

meh...you know what, I am resigning myself to lurking in the Gnr section until this RRHOF thing or some type of new music is played/stolen/released whatever. I am at a boiling point with this shit. Like Killingvector said, we are treading water. I am happy that Axl is having fun and is actually out kicking up dust. But, the same old tired arguments are wearing thin.
hang in there, dude. We are all at the same boiling point.
Just let out the steam.
Imagine if the 3rd NY show belts out the same setlist as the first two....christ, I mean, what WAS the point? Has to be money. Has to be.

I think the problem is that this band is still looking back and not looking forward. Additions such as DC, Estrange, and CW do not really help that cause.
#249 Re: Guns N' Roses » Roseland Ballroom, NYC 02/10/12 » 697 weeks ago
I agree with you, madagas.
I also think that we will know if Axl has made up his mind about the RRHOF when tour dates stop popping up around that time.

Even his statement on the new music issue is pretty dour.
