The sooner the EU falls apart, the better.
Just curious, are you opposed to the concept of the EU (or more generically something like a United States of Europe), or is your biggest problem the way it is organized?
I personally believe there's no way in hell that even the biggest European economies (Germany, France, UK, ...) can maintain their current levels if the EU were to seize to exist. There's just no way to compete effectively with the US, China, India, etc... (even Japan) when you don't have the scale the EU currently has.
Furthermore, the formation of the EU over the past few decades has been one of the most important drivers in turning a war-torn Europe from a warfare to a welfare continent. I think the EU definitely deserved the Nobel peace prize it got in 2012.
Now, does the current EU 'democracy' work? Hell no, the entire setup is asinine. We need a single pan-European parliament and senate that is directly elected by the European people. We need a pan-European income and corporate tax system, a pan-European intelligence agency, a pan-European military, pan-European border and customs, etc... Member states should be either fully in, or fully out. None of this UK/Norway bullshit of special cases and special rules.
Of course, the individual states need state rights as well. Things like culture, education, VAT and sales tax, local roads and infrastructure, ... are obviously better managed at the state level.
Unfortunately, I think we might need the EU to collapse before something like that is feasible. Or perhaps the UK leaving, Scotland seceding and joining the EU would provide an less revolutionary path towards a stronger Europe.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the sentiments. I and my family, colleagues, etc... are ok as far as we know. I take this flight often enough for it to be kinda routine (once every month/two months or so).
The thing that is incredibly fucked up is that the country had been on high alert for months since the last, we had military personnel actually patrolling the airport (I saw one in the exact place where the first bombs were detonated), subways, multiplexes, shopping streets and malls, ....
We need to stop thinking that throwing more brute force at this problem is going to solve anything, it just creates a false sense of security. Everyone can always hide in plain sight in busy places like this. We can only really solve this by dramatically increasing the quality and quantity of our domestic (as in pan-European) intelligence operations. These groups need to be infiltrated, up to the highest levels, with as many agents as possible and taken down from the inside.
DCK, I seem to be stacking up these near misses! I was in Paris the day of the Charlie Hebdo attacks, I was in LA when San Bernardino happened, I took the Thalys the day that attack was foiled... Oh, and my birthday is September 11th... go figure!

At least 13 dead after explosions at the airport, supposedly 2 more attacks on the subway in Brussels...

I'm currently in Frankfurt, on a layover from Brussels to San Francisco. This happened about 90 minutes after I checked in at that exact same spot. To say that I'm a bit shaken would be an understatement...

Well, he better have his rasp back in that case!

Also, I think Axl could easily pull off Don't Damn me if he's in shape physically. Yes, there's a lot of words to be sung there, but at least vocally he can for the most part use the lower register "CD" style voice (except for the slow part in the middle).
I saw a lot of people put this on their 'filler' list, but I absolutely love that song and think it would kick ass live!

So, I figured I'd try to put together a (somewhat) realistic setlist. This is based on the best-case scenario rumours that have been floating around – Izzy and Adler doing guest spots, a VR track, some Chinese Democracy material included and a new song (as per the rumours floating around, it's Atlas Shrugged – subbed in for Catcher, since it's allegedly a similar piano-led track).
I've tried to apply some rational thought to the setlist – it's loosely based on the most recent gigs, as this is effectively a "continuation" of Axl's GN'R with Slash and Duff subbed in for Tommy and DJ/Bumble. I've added solo spots and Izzy/Duff-led songs so Axl can go and huff oxygen backstage, assumed that they'll break out the tracks they've historically played and in roughly the same order, tried to balance fast/slow stuff and albums of different material in there. And I stuck Sailing in there 'cause why not?
Intro (The General)
Welcome to the Jungle
It's So Easy
Mr Brownstone
Estranged
Fortus solo (James Bond theme)
Live and Let Die
This I Love
So Fine (Duff vocals)
Dizzy solo (Another Brick in the Wall?)
Atlas Shrugged
14 Years (Izzy vocals)
Fall To Pieces
You Could Be Mine
Slash solo (Godfather)
Sweet Child O' Mine
Civil War
Axl piano jam
November Rain
You're Crazy (slow)
Yesterdays
Slash/Fortus guitar duet (Beautiful?)
Rocket Queen (Adler guest drums)
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Madagascar
Patience
NightrainEncore
Sailing
Don't Cry (Adler/Izzy guest)
Paradise City (Adler/Izzy guest)
That's a fine setlist, but with only two CD songs I would hardly call that a continuation of Axl's GNR.
If I were to build on this, I'd drop some of the slower/piano stuff (and if Atlas Shrugged really is yet another piano ballad, I'd hope they debut another new song instead) and substitute for more rockers. For Axl to save face, I think you'd need to include CD, and given that it's a rocker that's easy for him to sing I'm betting it'll be in there (and I don't mind). If Pitman is really out, I think they'll drop Maddy. Since the better rockers on CD are sort off out of character for classic Guns, it might be better to pick up Slither and/or Set Me Free instead of adding Scrapped and Shackler's. I'm on the fence about Better, and really don't like Riad.
So how about this:
Welcome to the Jungle
Chinese Democracy
It's So Easy
Mr Brownstone
Slither
Fortus solo (James Bond theme)
Live and Let Die
This I Love
So Fine (Duff vocals)
14 Years (Izzy vocals)
Fall To Pieces
You Could Be Mine
Set Me Free
Slash solo
Sweet Child O' Mine
Civil War
Axl piano jam
November Rain
You're Crazy (slow)
Yesterdays
Slash/Fortus guitar duel
Rocket Queen (Adler guest drums)
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Patience
Nightrain
Encore
Don't Cry (Adler/Izzy guest)
Paradise City (Adler/Izzy guest)

Ask Perot how the straight businessman approach works. It had to be someone pulling a Trump. I said that numerous pages ago. Nice doesn't bring change. Nice doesn't get people fired up. It had to be this way; there was no other way to get to where the establishment was in trouble.
Page 71. You don't even have to go back too far to see the latest mention.
You're still not explaining why 'it has to be this way'. What way? To achieve what, exactly?
#258 Re: The Garden » 2016 Presidential Election Thread » 484 weeks ago
How? Raise tariffs? That's Trump's plan. Does that make sense?
It does, but the unfortunate side effect will be that Americans should get ready to pay up to 50% more for their CE devices, clothes, etc...
Also, it'd set the US high tech industry back significantly if Europe doesn't follow suit: European companies would still manufacture in China, import to Europe and sell through to the US shifting the center of the high tech industry (back) to Europe.
#259 Re: The Garden » 2016 Presidential Election Thread » 484 weeks ago
I think you guys are still missing the point completely. I haven't seen anyone say trump is the ideal candidate. He's necessary to get us where we need to be.
It's kind of hard to get your point though, you keep asserting things but rarely back them up with reasoning and arguments. Can you explain why Trump 'is necessary to get us where we need to be' and where exactly you think that is?

So your plan is spend your way out of debt? Please explain.
Even the most pessimistic/right-wing view on Bernie's plans project a net positive result of $9.8 trillion over 10 years, how is that spending your way out of debt?
The concept behind it is very simple (and gives some insights into why trickle-down economics doesn't work): the richer people are, the greater the percentage of money they earn becomes "immobile" (in bank accounts, long-term investments, ...) effectively taking it out of the economy. Poor and middle-class people on the other hand will spend most, if not all, of the extra money they earn as part of an updated tax program (or money they don't have to spend on things like healthcare and education), pumping it back into the economy which leads to higher income for the state, which in turn covers the cost of all these social plans.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a miracle cure for an economic malaise, but I believe it definitely is what the country needs at this time.
