#251 Re: Guns N' Roses » UYI Box tracklist unveiled? » 140 weeks ago
I've seen both bands, and… while the Conspirators are a tight unit and Slash clearly enjoys making music with them, Myles just leaves me cold. He has great vocal range and power, for sure. But…
There are two things I look for in a frontman: lyrical poetry and passionate delivery. I'll take a Scott Weiland or a Jeff Angell, who have a limited vocal range but a lyrical turn of phrase and passionate delivery, over a singer who hits all the notes but doesn't make me feel anything. And sad to say, Myles is of that type. It's a bit like DJ Ashba; he's striking all the poses, he's hitting all the notes but it feels a bit forced to me.
Axl, meanwhile, has the full package. Incredible vocal range, fire in his belly, lyrical songwriting skills. And if his voice is a bit less powerful than it was in his 1980s/90s heyday, that's honestly the thing I care least about of the three.

I think TB comes in for a lot on unwarranted stick tbh. As James said, they clearly act as a support system which Axl depends on, and ultimately that's the most important thing; I'd rather have no music and Axl in a happy place mentally, than new music with Axl wrestling with personal demons.
And you can't dispute the fact that they've achieved what no other management could; a (partial) reunion, Axl producing new(ish) music with Slash and Duff, and a world tour that ranks among the most successful of all time. I can't blame them for the issues around AFD and Hard Skool's staggered digital-physical release, since every band has had problems with vinyl manufacturing and distribution during the pandemic. And yes, they could be doing more with the archive material. It boggles the mind that they haven't released Houston '16 as a Blu-ray, and the UYI box set could definitely have more on there (where are the demos ffs?). But, whatever.

The new Queen song.
It's... okay. They've clearly reached the point where they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for unused Freddie Mercury vocals; I've heard the original demo and these are obviously placeholder lyrics that he wasn't intending to use in the finished song. But there is passion in his delivery, so it's nice to hear a finished song in one form or another.
I kind of wish they'd been a bit more innovative/ambitious though. For example, taking the bits where Freddie had come up with one line but not a follow-up, and writing/recording a new follow-up line with Brian or Roger doing a sort of "call-and-response." Would've gone a long way towards making it feel like a more complete piece, and turned a weakness into a strength.

They soundchecked (a bit of) Don't Damn Me!

The Origin (seen at a film festival, on release later in the year) - survival horror about a tribe of early modern humans being hunted by... something. It's very well-researched, with the director tapping survival experts, linguists and archaeologists to realistically portray our ancestors.
The whole film's in a fictional language, loosely based on a Basque dialect that's apparently the oldest living language in the world. There's a neat twist towards the end that kind of reflects the broader Original Sin of how homo sapiens came to dominate the world. Very enjoyable both as a historical document and a simple horror/thriller film.
#256 Re: Guns N' Roses » SCOM Troubadour 2016 Pro Shot » 141 weeks ago
I find it really hard to watch the clips from the Troubadour show 'cos every time I see Axl running around or putting weight on his broken foot I'm wincing internally.
Agree that the mix sounds wonky, and it's not the best showcase of his voice (Houston '16 is still the gold standard on this tour, wish they'd release a proshot of that show). Still, it would be nice if they gave this show an official release, given its historical significance.

Missed opportunity to turn the hat upside down and get a photo of the kitten inside it, smh.

Yeah the music is good...Axl looks a bit tired....or something.
He'd been running around on a broken foot all night ffs. Give the man a break.
#259 Re: Guns N' Roses » IRS Live 2006 » 142 weeks ago
What I find fascinating is that every single tour since 2001 there have been people complaining that:
1) Axl is looking heftier than last time omg he is fat
2) Axl's voice has gone omg mickey mouse lol
3) omg what is Axl wearing he looks like a clown lol
It happened when he took his shirt off for Paradise City at RIR 2001 (and I don't think he's ever done that since, he was clearly stung by the reaction). It happened with the hockey jerseys and braids in 2002 ("lol he's hiding the pounds under the baggy shirts"). It happened in 2006, it happened in 2010, it happened in 2016, 2017, and beyond.
And every single time a few years later you get people comparing the tour to the "glory days" of the last one, or the last-but-one, and saying that Axl's lost it. Often it's the same bloody people who were complaining about the last tour.
So: "OMG 2022 Axl is fat and has lost his voice, if only he looked/sounded like he did in 2016 at the (cherry-picked) Houston show."
In five years we'll get a reappraisal of 2022 Axl, I guarantee it.

He's on fire here. Hell..even his swagger is back.
Mate, I remember when that video dropped people were giving Axl shit, criticising his voice, the stumble where he couldn't get back up onto the stage, his weight… and now it's hailed as a classic performance.
