Late night speculation part I:
The more I think about it, the more I think Axl has a direct role in having My GNR shutdown. Especially with Eric ending his statement the way he did, wishing Axl the best etc. To me that is somebody who is doing their best to keep the peace.
Late night speculation part II:
Part of me also wonders if this is somehow tied to the MSL fiasco. Something that (if I remember) was never allowed to be discussed on HTGTH, yet FLOURISHED on MyGnR. Could this have been the catalyst for Axl to go apeshit on Eric finally? The tipping point where Rose decided once and for all that Eric's site was out of control (true or not) and a threat to his brand (true or not.)

I still say GNRX was the best of the bunch. jarmo even used to post there.
I'm still blown away that a site would try to inflate their numbers.
What was GNRX?
I don't know why a site would inflate it's numbers either. For one they totally aren't believable and two it doesn't work.
Does anybody remember the "Lost Rose" blog? I used to visit there in 2000 (I think) before I bothered with the forums.
I don't know about anybody else, but at this point it is almost a habit. I've made it quite clear I'm not that excited by GNR these days, but still make visiting a couple of places a daily ritual. Although I don't have one I'd call "home" anymore. For years HTGTH was my home and I rarely, if ever, went to any other forum.

Well even before Jarmo got all cozy with GnR, he began to be too controlling in regards to how conversations flowed. Off topic banter (in the off topic section no less) was tightly moderated by him and often he would lock up topics or demand people get back on course. He also seemed to love arguing with his members, which I found odd. He'd argue all day with them, threads in the admin section dedicated to sparring matches. And nnce he became Axl's bootlick, forget it, the place changed immensely.
But yes for a few years, say from 01-05 it was a great forum and I was always on.

HTGTH has really gone to shit since hasn't it? I remember when hanging out at the place was fun, but that was a looooong time ago.

Kind of crazy the "victim" got the same punishment as the bully. What is the lesson they're trying to teach anyway? Sit there and take a beating?
I remember when I was a kid, in a redneck grade school in Florida. I went to the teacher because I was being picked on by another student. He punished both of us, him for picking on me, and me for not putting up for myself. How's that for some southern logic? Of course if I would have hit back (which I did later) I would have gotten in trouble then too. Either way, you're in trouble, and most times it equaled getting paddled.
Always loved that redneck mentality, how else do we deter violence besides paddling these boys with a big ass board? Makes total sense huh? lol

^^
From what the mods say, it'll probably be up for a little while until it's taken off line.
That's what I don't get. Why couldn't he just announce it was going offline and then put it in maintenance mode at midnight until the whatever happened? He made this announcement then let the site fall into disarray.
Now it's a ship floating out at sea with a bunch of drunk pirates on board, some of whom actually believe the captain may still sell it to them before it sinks. Funny stuff indeed.

Right now:
NewGNR: 1123 Guests, 70 Users (10 Hidden)
CD.com: 107 Guests, 15 Users
gnfnr: 4 members, 9 guests, 0 anonymous users
HTGTH: 25 Guests, 2 Users (1 Hidden)
Pretty much says which site is the biggest now.
NewGNR always says it has 1000 + guests and a couple of hundred users. It's a script they use to make it look as if they are busy. Usually it's the same dozen jerk offs and that's it. Check it out, and see how "busy" it is. The post count/activity NEVER matches what it reports at the bottom.

The MBs were originally driven by the mystique of CD (and lack of news) anyway. Once that was gone, many people took their ball and went home. I remember boards predicting an influx in traffic, and in fact the opposite happened when CD was released. To me that was the first tipping point for the online GnR community. Prior to that users would sleuth through the boards looking for any tid bit of information they could get their hands on. Once the cat was out of the bag, the excitement, and anticipation vanished really. After that the boards slowly hemorrhaged users.
MyGnR closing is also another turning point, and it will most certainly change the online fan landscape as we know it. I honestly don't see any other boards that are capable of carrying that load and becoming a staple in the community. There are what? Half a dozen smaller boards that became noticeably vacant after the CD saga was essentially over. The traffic had migrated to mygnr, leaving the others to their core groups of posters (a couple dozen or so per board.) Of course there is also HTGTH.
MyGNR is indeed an end to an era. The demand simply isn't there to create another MyGNR and never will be again. It started at the right time and frankly it ended at the right time too. How many people on these boards are really excited about Guns anymore? I think a better question may even be, how excited about Guns is Guns anymore?
Over the last couple of years, I talk very little about Guns, other than how disappointed I am in them. I think ultimately Eric was tired, let down, and would prefer to have a life. Receiving letters threatening litigation ain't so fun either, and sure wouldn't motivate me to keep spending money on a fan site.
Honestly I think MYGNR pulling the plug represents many things in regards to this band and it's fans.

ppp wrote:MYGNR has been poorly moderated for years, sadly. First they had Madison who was allowed to ban everyone that disagreed with any opinion she had (even non-GNR ones). Eric did nothing about this until Axl got fed up with her, despite many posters asking him to do so.
The madison fiasco looks completely different in hindsight now. It was the first nail in the coffin of mygnr and what makes it laughable is all the people pissing and moaning about the site's demise were cheering that on. The lead singer of the band the site was devoted to demanded the removal of the person who ran it for nine years yet no one thought that would have consequences?
mygnr sold out but wasn't allowed to go balls deep in the selling out and get continuous, never ending perks. It was the most active site for YEARS and became even more active when Jarmo went official. I guess the desire for shows, backstage passes, and emails from Beta were so strong they were willing to risk it all.
Now look where they are. Axl never needed the site and I told that to madison when all that shit went down. The GNR camp has an official forum. They don't need 2, 3,etc. They need ONE to filter content through and the strategy to play the two other major sites like a fiddle until tossing them aside like garbage was a checkmate move on the online community.
mygnr is now dead. Now all that remains is cd.com which is a borderline troll factory, newgnr which is a virtual clone of that, gunsnfnroses which is a small yet active community similar to this one, and GNRevo.
HTGTH is king and will be the site where ALL news is filtered through. Every other site that still exists will be littered with links to HTGTH for almost every future topic, which effectively neuters all other sites, regardless of no censorship or how close the communities are.
My long ago prediction that there would eventually only be one forum and it would be affiliated with the band/official website is a large step closer to reality.
Well I don't know if I agreed with you then, and I don't know if I agree with you know, but as sure as hell looks like you're right.

There is obviously much more to this than Eric feels he should tell us. The cost, time, and potential legal issues alone would have any rational person asking "why bother?"
