Yeah but most of them only step outside of the standard rock paradigm because they can't cut it inside the box.
I disagree with this wholeheartedly. And for your example, you pick GNR and Nirvana, which is taking one of the best bands of rock, GNR, against one of the weakest performance groups of the alternative scene. And you judge them exclusively on performance. Writing counts too, and that's Nirvana's, well, only strength.
And even so, could GNR have achieved the right balance for alternative music? Could they play with the right accents, the right subtleties? Who knows. The vocalists and lead guitarists from 80s bands could probably do a better job of the notes and rhythms than could alternative players trying 80s music, but there's so much more to music than that. The alternative movement had significantly better drummers and bass players, and singers who put more into emoting that hitting clean high notes.
And that's really what that movement was all about. Expanding the scope of music to include textures and transitions and subtleties and ensemble playing.

Jane's Addiction were a lone deviating sound from 80s rock in the LA scene of the 80s. Gotta give them some respect for being out there and not doing the typical glam thing.
If you want to slam the alternative scene for its unnecessarily agitated stance on 80s rock, fine, but don't pretend it had nothing to offer. None of the rock bands outside of that movement were going to write '3 Days' or 'Then She Did' - Jane's did some great stuff. So did Smashing Pumpkins. So did Blind Melon (hey, it's me, of course I was gonna give Melon a shout out).
Grunge had a lot of bands that were only different from bands like GNR in superficial ways, but a bunch of those alternative groups were able to step outside the standard rock paradigm, at least for a few songs or a whole album, and do some really cool stuff.

I didn't like... any of it. I can't even specify beyond that. The crowd's reaction was entirely justified. It was irritating, unrelenting, Cornell just wailed on high notes without any musicality or articulation. The lyrics were completely unintelligible, and the band wasn't crisp enough to make sense of the song to an audience that hadn't heard it before.
I didn't rock and it didn't make sense. It was hard to follow without being dynamic at any point. I have to expect that they're dead on arrival in terms of mainstream attention if that's how they choose to present themselves.

I gotta say, I watched the show last night, and I thought their performance was 100%, start to finish, absolutely awful. Huge disappointment.

Well I'm sure promoting Jason Garrett will solve all their problems

Compared to Green Bay's injury problems the Cowboys injuries, minus Romo, are pretty minor. And even when Romo was healthy they were a 1-6 team, so hard to blame their struggles on his absence.
The coaches obviously have to go but it's the players fault for the way they play. They've completely given up and that really speaks about the character they have there. I've never been impressed with this Cowboys team and the inability to win playoff games, the attitude of entitlement they have, and their collapse this season all point to the players. Wade may be terrible (he's actually just mediocre) but it's not his fault the Cowboys choose not to tackle players. Or that they get beat in man coverage 9 of 10 times.
Athletes at this level shouldn't need coaches to motivate them. It's as unprofessional as anything I've seen in the NFL.

If the Bills take a quarterback I'll be kinda pissed.

If the Sabres don't show some life soon, I really gotta wonder if Lindy's time is up. They play with no heart at all, and do worse at home than on the road. I like how we draft and how we coach our young talent on the way up, but there's no excuses for this team to be so bad right now with really low/moderate turnover from last year.
Sabres are 30th in the nhl, Bills are 32nd in the nfl. Both dead last. At least the Bills look like they're getting better, and I think a more energetic coach for the Sabres could spark some improvement.

Yeah the new cover art is just... whatever. Nothing good about it, it's just darker. I wonder if he'll leak a track or two in the coming days/weeks. I'll have my eyes open at the nin fan sites for anything that comes out.
