#301 Re: Guns N' Roses » If CD came out in 2000, 2001 or 2002? » 145 weeks ago

This will be an unpopular opinion.

First let me say I love the CD songs and it's one of my favourite albums.

But I doubt it would be a huge runaway commercial success.

Rock fans wanted at least Axl and Slash on a record. So it would be treated like an Axl solo record. Accordingly, Axl's fame would give it a certain amount of success as he has pedigree as the front man of one of the most important acts of a generation. However, given the style is a touch different (especially in 2002 as opposed to the 2008 versions) there would be a roof on it.

Think of how Snakepit, VR and Slash solo has gathered enough attention and awards to be successful but isn't playing GNR sized venues - and that's despite Slash sticking to his known style and not having expectations upon the audience to evolve with him.

Axl on the other hand was putting out challenging stuff - so I assume he'd do well but not super well. At least with the record as it was.

When i hear stuff like the dance remix of TIL i wonder if Axl could have been entirely reinveted in a different genre in some other world.

Everyone in classic GNR adds their flavour that makes the sound.

But I think to the casual listener who isn't a deep music fan the most obvious aspects are Axl's raspy tone and Slash's unique guitar sound.

Which isn't to discount the other members, swapping them out makes a difference, but it's much more subtle.

To non-musicians and casual-fans you can replace stuff like rhythm guitar and drums and it doesn't matter.

I think that's what tricked Axl into thinking he'd get away with replacing the whole band for a while. But it turns out Slash was not someone you can swap out so easily.

So in short... I think he has more than a few songs left in the vault.

Another interesting thing was the TIL dance mix which seemed to feature an entirely different vocal track. I mean maybe the scream version was using outtake vocals from the original session, but it had the character and of his 2009 era voice which made me wonder if it was more recent.

That plus all the stuff you said, plus the occasional comment from people associated with the project makes me think there's a lot of stuff.

Like people talk smack but there's too many people who have said stuff for there to be nothing.

I actually think generally it works better for Vince's songs. Like motley is for the most part party music, so vince can be breathless and mumble but hit the right pitch and the general mood of the song survives even though you can't make out the actual words.

The issue with GNR is a lot of it is emotional/angry music where the tone of voice was really a part of setting the mood, so if Axl hits the pitch but in a mild mannered voice it changes the character of the song.

The sad bit is you can see he's trying his ass off. Like I suspect with his age and the sort of vocal damage he probably has he really shouldn't sing at all, should be unable to pull off anything close to the range of these songs, or get any grit left.

So I think the fact there's even a hint of rasp occasionally and that they're in the original key at this stage is the modern version of Axl being the musical monster he was in his youth.

That's my take on it anyway.

Like his voice sucks now compared to the past, but it's also been worse than this show (a few of the shows last year IMO), and the situation basically asks the impossible of him. Not saying it's great though cos I can hear the bits that are wrong just as bad as anyone.

But it is what it is at this stage.

Sadly I think sort of some type of medical marvel being invented I think the days of him coming out with blow-away UYI style vocals or even Ac/Dc 2016 style vocals are just gone. But you can still have a bit of fun at the shows, hopefully we get some UYI shows released proshot soon, and with any luck some more original recordings from before things got so dire too.

I'd be happy for the leaks to come out though because we know they're good vocally.

New songs would be cool too, but i'll take proper versions coming out of Perhaps, State of Grace and even an Eye on You version of some type than I would songs where he's using his current live voice.

I so hope this happens! I would love to hear a finished version of state of grace so badly!!!

^ That's how I felt watching the late 2021 shows we had....I started doubting if he'd even get to our tour or if they'd be forced to stop.

But I thought Rio wasn't as bad.

I mean his voice is clearly damaged these days, but he's getting better at mixing the mickey into spots where it's less intrusive. I noticed he did kinda yell a few of the lower ranged parts too - like in patience or something almost in the absurd voice...it makes me think he must be really struggling at this stage in a whole lot of his registers.

If you watch the whole broadcast there's some good stuff to go with the bad. Sound mix and band timing was much better than the previous Rio gig in 2017 or whenever it was. And slash's cover of Born on a Bad sign was pretty rad.

Also props to richard who pulled out some monster shred in KOHD...had his back to the camera unfortunately but it was a bit like WTF - i knew he could play fast but it's like he's getting better and better hahahahah.

Anyways, i find it hard, like the best they sounded since reunion was houston 2016 IMO, and everything post Ac/Dc tour has been a struggle vocally it seems, which is sort of tragic because they're capable of so much on a good day. But there's some light in the darkness for me, like everynow and then they do something pretty cool even if not up to the skills of the past. I really think more singles/albums is the key for me - as the vocals will have been recorded back in the day...and I think on a good day in the studio Axl could layer enough sound to get some anger going here and there.

I actually enjoyed it.

Obviously his modern voice isn't what we'd dream of. Like this show with Houston 2016 vocals would be amazing. Let alone fantasies like this type of 4k HD proshot with this line up except him as a younger man like in 2006 or something. So, it's not the dream show....but it's actually pretty watchable I found.

Admittedly my expectations going in were low. A huge part of what I liked about Axl's voice traditionally was rasp, and accordingly I've had trouble enjoying a lot of the shows from 2018 onwards. Most times I start watching but end up turning it off as some of the classic hits numbers really show up the different vocals. But this one was different somehow - there's still a LOT of mickey places and so on...but it's sort of serviceable.

I mean you wouldn't choose that voice but it's watchable mostly. In particular I thought the first hour was pretty solid - partly cos the first few songs are not as punishing vocally I think.

As polluxlm said - i was expecting it to be a cringe fest sadly - but it's a decent night's watch.

I do think we're seeing the tail end of the band's career these days as it's clear Axl isn't going to be able to do this forever.
I just hope they release more singles like Absurd and Hardschool before the end.

#309 Re: Guns N' Roses » Predictions for the next decade? » 146 weeks ago

I must admit I've warmed to Hardschool...cranked the shit out of it in the car the other day....but never the less....I dunno why a person would buy a hardschool top that's plain like that.

I mean a top for 1 song would be weird enough...but I could see it for a classic like WTTJ or YCBM or NR or something...but HS? I mean I like it but that's strange to me.

I see people say this a lot.

The problem is the whole idea of that is antithetical to the very foundations of monarchy.

King Charles III is king unless he personally choses to abdicate or unless he dies.

It's not something like a prize that is awarded because he seemed like the best fit or because a lot of people like him.

It's just not how it works.

Sort of like how a president doesn't stop being president just cos people dislike him, although admittedly the media seems to have forgotten that too in the past decade or so lol.
