Looks like the Glasgow gig's been called off: https://twitter.com/gigsinscotland/status/1544051848558137350?s=20&t=VnwMjheICgalH8zN688saw

Yeah, I agree - and hopefully the almost universally positive response from the fans to the low voice will give him the confidence to change it up. They've also lucked out in having Melissa there – she can take the high vocal lines in the choruses while he delivers the power in the low end.

Here's Civil War, where he switches over to the lower register halfway through:

I haven't seen other songs from yesterday, but Nightrain with lower register was really good. Better than mickey, who was very weak in these last shows.
The irony is, allegedly the reason they were late on was Axl was apparently having anxiety issues over his voice going. But he sounds ten times better in the lower register! I'll take low growly Axl over the "right" notes in a Mickey voice any day. Either stick with this, or take the songs and transpose them to a lower key so he can sing the "old" vocal lines.

Axl had to sing in his lower register last night, and it sounded a lot better.
Honestly I don't know why they don't just tune down a half step the whole time anyway, but this is perfectly reasonable and gets rid of the Mickey Mouse issue. Plus you've got Melissa to carry the high vocal line in the backing vocals.

Well, by some miracle I managed to get a refund from Ticketmaster.
Show was pretty good; Axl and the band were on form, but they started late so they just blasted through the hits with no deep cuts. They even cut YCBM! One day I'll get to hear them play fucking Madagascar or TWAT...
Fortus was buried in the mix for the first few songs, Axl stopped Estranged halfway through to ask the audience is they could actually hear him. And Carrie Underwood turned up for SCOM and PC.

Sooo I've got a ticket for the Friday London show going spare, anyone want it?

Yeah it would be interesting.
I always think the whole thing would be different if Robin had not originally been the lead guy. Not saying he can never do a lead some of his stuff suits the new songs well. But he never had the chops to be lead player on the old material.
I would have put him in the Izzy role....that is Rhythm player who contributes new material, sure give him the odd lead line on the CD songs, but like Richard his main role is to be the rhythm guy. Then hire a monster player to be Slash and give that guy EVERY lead. Like a buckethead (although his image was an issue), a bumble, or maybe someone with more of a blues-shred background like Doug Aldrich. Slash's role is to be the guitar hero of the group...so it just works better having 1 dude in that role not splitting it into 2/3.
The thing is Robin is an interesting lead player; I'd love to see him in a Zeppelin/Queen-esque set-up where there's only one guitarist who gets to define the entire sound of the band. But in a GN'R setting where there's a weight of expectation as to how the band should sound, I'm not sure it entirely clicks. And I say that as a Robin fan who loves his contributions.
So you either go with the original plan – Robin as the only lead player, a complete change of direction for the sound, and wave goodbye to all those epic Buckethead solos that are outside of his comfort zone. Or you accept that Finck would be wasted on rhythm and go with a Fortus/Buckethead combo.
But then you run into the problem of Buckethead not really clicking with the other band members (Tommy in particular). Basically, a two-guitar setup with Fortus and Buckethead was probably the winning combo, but I'm not sure it would've lasted in any case, just because of the personalities involved.
Ironically the setup that would've probably been most acceptable to GN'R fans from the off would've been Fortus on lead and someone else on rhythm. Fortus has a look and feel that isn't alienating to GN'R fans, he can shred, etc etc. But by the time he auditioned, Axl had found Buckethead and had the bit between his teeth...
#320 Re: Guns N' Roses » What are your opinions of HS and Absurd? » 156 weeks ago
Absurd: Utterly baffling that this was the song they used to announce their return.
Slash and Duff have really elevated it musically, but the repeated lyrics are irritating. Songs are usually structured to build outwards from the initial lyric, like a fractal; just repeating the first verse over and over feels counterintuitive. And they haven't even used some of the additional lyrics that we know exist from earlier demos and live performances, in order to add variety.
If it were me, I would've structured it something like this:
[Verse]
Listen, motherfuckers, to the song that should be heard
Back down in the gutter is more than you deserve
Screaming fucking banshee, you know that’s what you are
Pussy full of maggots, isn’t that absurd?
[Chorus]
Absurd
Absurd
Absurd
[Verse]
Dizzy little dreamer with your head down in the stars
Fucking little schemer lost yourself inside the art
Syphilitic priestess baby, I know who you are
Parasitic demon sucking acid through your heart
[Chorus]
What can I do?
With a bitch like you…
[Chorus]
All I have I ask of you
I'll be damned
If it's not true
Every word of you
A bitch like you
[Chorus]
Absurd
Absurd
Absurd
[Bridge]
Just another life slips away
[Refrain]
Listen, motherfuckers, to the song that should be heard
Back down in the gutter is more than you deserve
Screaming fucking banshee you know that’s what you are
Pussy full of maggots, isn’t that absurd?
[Chorus]
Absurd
Absurd
Absurd
Hard Skool: Solid song, should've been the first one out the gates. I really like it. I know the use of the "aah-aahs" from one of the other demos irritates fans, but honestly if we hadn't had the leaks no one would've known. The drums are a bit plodding on the final release; they really should've used the drums from the original demo, which are much more dynamic and interesting.
