Are we really this bored with the leaks already that we have to talk about UYI?
Ummm.... overall feelings on CD era songs ^^^: game, set, match.

I'm with Bono and SG on this subject of Estranged and Civil War, but I can see the other point as well. Civil War is one of the only non singles to ever be played on a massive rotation on top 40 radio. Its most certainly known in the music world. Of course its not being played now because its one of UYI II's obscure tracks. Like Bono said, grannies were even listening to Estranged until grunge hit.
I feel like we've entered a time warp where we're in 1991 but using the internet.
Who cares about Chinese Democracy? Lets speculate about UYI.
that's too funny.

Estranged isn't a joke, i never said it was. I did say the public views it as a joke, and that is because of the video. People remember songs a lot by their videos, and Estranged's isn't really a good one.
Most casual GNR fans i know do not know Civil War, at least not by name. They know the song, but not the name.
My point exactly. the song is associated with the video. Nobody thought it was a joke before they saw the video. Play the song in a neutral setting and people WILL like it. And the situation with people not knowing the name of a song(Civil War) is not unique to the general public when it comes to alot of songs. Huge club hits like Low by hip hop artist Flo Rida are requested all the time by the wrong name. Most people know it as Apple Bottom Jeans . When I ask if they mean "Low" they aren't sure. Sometimes they even say "can you play song #4 off justin Timberlakes new album. The general public doesn't care what a song is called. You play Civil War and people WILL like it and remember it. Civil War just might be the one Gn'R song that even Gn'R haters like.

This is way the fuck off topic, but since this thread is as all over the place as CD is
very true but its made for some good conversation.

That is why Estranged has been voted one of the worst rock ballads of all time. It's considered a joke by most people.
Civil War is easily forgotten by the general public. Ask anyone that isn't a diehard to name a GNR song and i can guarantee that Civil War and Estranged won't even cross their minds.
haha! Ask anyone who's not a diehard to name anything other than SCOM, PC, Jungle, or November Rain. You really are outta touch here Saikin with the appreciation that Civil War garners from Gn'R fans and non fans alike. That is a sick ass song and I've yet to hear anyone ever say otherwise.
None of the Estranged bashing ever happend untill after the video was released. the song rules and everyone knew it. BUT when they put out the over the top video it was durring the Grunge fever pitch and it was now cool to blast bands like Gn'R. the video was pompus so critics started to associate the song with the video. the video was anything but street crd Gn'R so of course sudenly the song losses it's cred. My brother who is not in any way shape or from a diehard or even a fan really just said he thinks Estranged is, and I quote "fucking awesome".
is it just me or am I seeing a situation develope here where people are wanting to like the new Gn'R so badly that the've actually started trying to justify a song like Estranged being a joke or Civil War being forgettable to support their case? This has got to be one of the most insane things I've ever seen on a Gn'R forum.

Bono wrote:Seriously outside the cozey confines of the Gn'R forum world would think The Blues is one of the greatest songs Axl has ever written? I just don't see that happening. Up there with SCOM, Civil War, November Rain, Estranged? No way.
Here, though, the GN'R forum arrogance is already stamped on this post just like those loving the leaks. Tell me again who loves Estranged beyond GN'R diehards? Estranged is one of the biggest jokes to music fans when it came out, and it's still an easy joke people make when talking about GN'R.
I am 100% sure that The Blues would be given more respect than Estranged was.
And I'm not sure people really remember Civil War...
You are completely wrong with this statement. When the Illusion albums came out every muther fucker owned those albums including non diehards and Estranged was thought of as amazing by most everyone I know. It's the video that was thought of as a joke. Trust me on that one. Civil War is a song that's appreciated by people who don't even like the old GN'R and is still a regular on radio where I live.
Seriously if you wanted to introduce someone to Guns N' roses and impress them would you choose The Blues over Estranged or Civil war? I seriously doubt it.

I can't believe what i am reading. I think hell just froze over.
How the hell can VR be better than these leaks? Contraband was already written when Scott came in, and then he tried to sing and write for the music, which obviously didn't work too well. Libertad was one big mess. Horrible writing, uninspired songs, and a record that really feels like it wasn't taken seriously at all. Take 4 amazing musicians, and you should get an amazing album. Didn't happen that way.
Slash, Scott, Duff, and Matt have all written amazing music in their careers. CB and Libertad definintley were not their best works, not even close.
The Blues is one of the best songs Axl has ever written. Every single one of BH's solos are amazing. Robin shines on songs like Better. Now we get to hear Tommy shine as well. Huge's work is critical.
So how can VR be better? Just because of songs like Slither and FTP?
Everyone is going on about how great VR were, and how great Libertad was. Where the fuck are the hit singles off of that? That's right, nothing topped their first album that people consider their worst.
I'm amazed right now. The talent of the band that made these songs is something we haven't seen in a long time.
Seriously outside the cozey confines of the Gn'R forum world would think The Blues is one of the greatest songs Axl has ever written? I just don't see that happening. Up there with SCOM, Civil War, November Rain, Estranged? No way. And again here we go judging VR's material on their talent. Saying they should be able to do much more. Well maybe if they spent 10 years doing it they would but they wanna fucking rock so they throw some shit together and there ya go. The talent in this Gn'R + the material we've heard + the time it's taken = major letdown. If the talent arguement can apply to VR it certainly can apply to Gn'R when they're arguebaly a more talented group of musicians.
Here's the thing. Axl has surrounded himself with a bunch of yes men. Argue it all you want but it's the way it is. Axl is the engine in all this. The songs are his, the direction is his, the ambition is his and there's nobody in this band to tell him to fuck off and lay down a track. In VR you got a bunch of no nonsense rockers. Super talented but with an ounce of the ambition. VR's like a Porsche but with nobody to drive it. Get Axl and the VR guys back together and you'd have the driver to run the fucking Porsche. I have no doubt in my mind that if these guys could sit down and work out their differences they'd blow any of this new Gn'R stuff outta the water. Slash and Duff would have no problem telling Axl enough is enough. Axl would bring his vision, Slash would bring that vision to fruition and there ya go. You'd a have a Gn'R with attitude, you'd have new and exciting music. It's called chemistry and i relly dont' thik the new Gn'R has "IT". I don't believe this new Gn'R has acomplished anything that the old Gn'R couldn't have. I mean with everyone that's been involved you'd think we'd have one song that we could all at least agree on but we don't and we're far from it.
I agree with Dreamline about Axl's voice. There's always been something about it that is appealing even when it's in the shitter. Just imagine Axl singing on Contraband or even Libertad with his knack for melody and lyrics. They'd fucking rock. It's not the guys in VR who let it down in my opinion. They just didn't have the proper driver. They aren't out to set the world on fire or be something they aren't. Axl on the other hand is too busy trying to be everything at once and it simply comes up flat.
Whoa. I kinda got of topic there. Sorry.
#3528 Re: Guns N' Roses » Potential Singles? » 887 weeks ago
The only one that has any hope of being successful in my opinion is Better. Axl's voice sounds like the Axl people remember, it's catchy, it's actually danceable, it not too heavy and the solo at the end is classic Gn'R sounding. The slow stuff like the Blues, CITR and If the World will in my opinion be thought of as cheesy. Madagascar has potential based on the melody but it's a bit too dramatic and the sound bites suck ass. IRS is weak as shit and I can't see that appealing to any mainstreme format. Rhiads doesnt' have a hope in hell of being a single. TWAT and #2 are are just too much. They're the furthest thing from the definition of a single. Chinese Democracy might not be too bad but nowhere near the success potential of Better.
#3529 Re: Guns N' Roses » Overall feelings on the CD era songs.... » 887 weeks ago
Bigbri I'm no expert in production either but like you I use my ears. For me the Gn'R stuff is a clusterfuck. It doesn't sound good, it doesnt' sound professional. Vocals are drowned out far too often, guitars are hidden under bullshit synth, too many electronic beeps and blips going on. The drum machines are embarassing and if they aren't drum machines than holy shit does Brain ever sound robotic and soulless. The songs have lost any heart and soul they may have had due to the production. they sound bloated and pretentious. I mean an all out "industrial" band like NIN sounds more organic than this stuff in my opinion.
#3530 Re: Guns N' Roses » Overall feelings on the CD era songs.... » 887 weeks ago
And the "ignorance" comment you are citing from me is from someone who said they don't hear a rocker in the leaks.
Is there anyone who would agree that there has been no rockers in these leaks? And I hope we're not gonna get into a debate of what constitutes a "rock" song. That would just be dumb.
haha no that is true. I think what people are saying is there's no straight out radio rocker. Nothing like say Hell Yeah by Rev Theory, or Remedy by Seether, or Slither by VR. There's these weird industrial, flavoured rockers that won't suit the mainstreme. Let's face it. Gn'R has been mainstrem since day one(a year after the fact mind you). Their songs are classic radio rockers and nothing we have from CD era fits that bill. But you're right breaking down rock songs into sub genre's would be silly. Personally I think Better is the closest thing. Bit of a mess in the middle of the song but it is a rocker for me. CD's kinda cool, R & B is a mess in my opinion.
