Haha! What the fuck? the poll suddenly appeared after I posted. Weird.

#3552 Re: The Sunset Strip » The Ultimate Showdown #2...WINNER ANNOUNCED » 888 weeks ago

I'm the furthest thing you'll find when it comes to a  VH fan(I think they're weak) but the only Van Hagger song I can recall is Right Now so going by the "classics" I gotta say Diamond Dave gets my vote.

Oddly though I dont' see a poll to vote in.  hmm

I hate to say it, but I agree. There's too many hands in this cookie jar for it to be considered GNR.

There was never a stable lineup for a sustainable amount of time.

very true. Would it not be a sign of true arrogance if this is released as a Gn'R record knowing how many people have been involved. In a way it's either saying Axl truely belives he and he alone is Gn'R or that he thinks anyone can be a member of Gn'R. Either way he ruins what it was to be  Guns N' Roses. The lid has been popped now on an old issue but is it now officially time for Axl to drop the Gn'R name from this project?

Lyrically Axl is still pretty fucking awesome in my opinion.

O.k. so  my feelings are pretty much the same when it comes to all the leaks so I just wanted to sum it up in one thread rather than discussing individual songs.

there's obviously alot of ambition going on here and that's a good  thing but I don't think it's  stretch to think the ambition has been falsely manufatctured based on EVERYONE'S expectations and the pressure.  For me there is WAY too much gooing on in all the CD era songs except Better(which I feel is far and away the best one). There is some amazing things happening musically in these songs but alot of the time its lost in the mess of production and unnessecary additions. For example too much of the drumming sounds artificial. Drum machines? When the guys(whoever it is) kick into some killer guitar solo they're far too often accompanied by some synthesizer orchestra and it takes way from the Gn'Rness of it all. Again trying too hard to be epic when a  kickass solo is all the epic you need. Imagine the solo in SCOM being accompanied by some orchestra the way the outro solo in TWAT is? Makes you wanna puke doesn't it.  There's nothing organic to these songs.  For me they're trying too hard.

Axl voice:  now this is a sensitive issue for most so I'll try and be as nice as possible. Obvioulsy I've voiced my opinions on his live voice so hopefully I can be objective in this. Here it goes. Axl's voice alot of the times sounds produced. Yes there's always been an amazing amount of production when it comes to Axl's studio voice but on the past albums I never sat there thinking "wow they've had to tinker with this alot to get to this point". At times he sounds great even awesome but at others he sounds God awful and even worse soudns liek an Axl impersonator.  Then there are the times when ambition musically gets in the way of his voice and he becomes barely audible. Bad mixing.  Chalk it up to these being demos? It's getting hard to think that.  I'll be the asshole to ask it first(I'll get crucified but whatever). Is Axl the weak link in this thing? Vocally and with over ambition?

In the past Axl had great melodies which he carried throughout the song. In the CD era songs Axl has some killer melodies but unfortunately he himself lets them down at various points throughout the songs only to bring it back again and then lose it all over again. Does anyone else notice this? I just find at times when the melody should go "high" he brings it "low". When it should go "right" he goes "left" It's an annoying style in my opinion and it reminds me of Billy Corgen(who's ruined many of his own songs this way in my opinion)

Overall these  songs are good and even great to some of us(not me) but they aren't the stuff that makes up a  classic album or even a really great album. I don't hear one classic song. I don't  hear anything that 20 years from now will be rockin on a  jukebox in some dive pub. Maybe that's asking, wanting and expecting too much though. Something I've been thinking about lately too. Does anyone else ever think the reason we like these songs is cause they are representing a  time in our lives that we've all waited for. Regardless of the quality of the songs would we not like them anyways based on the experience? I think alot of it  has to do with that. I mean CD is a cool song but it's not great but when I hear it I get chills and in some weird way I feel like it's my song  as are all the demos cause who do I really share the experience with? Names on a  monitor. You guys. No offence 16 But nobody else knows these songs so for me it's my songs in a  time in MY life that nobody else can share with me. they could be my own personal soundtrack and I think that contributes alot to the appeal whether it's a conscious thing or subconscious thing. Make sense?  Is it heresy to suggest that our appreciation for these songs has been manufactured rather than genuine? I mean I hate coldslaw but if I hadn't ate in a few weeks Coldslaw would taste pretty fucking good and there's a good chance I'd have an entirely new appreciation for that salad 16

To sum up(I could've made this post in one or two sentence 16): I think there's too much going on in all CD era songs and ambition/production is simply getting in the way of the songs.  There's flashes of greatness, flashes of crap, flashes of forgetableness,  flashes of pure genius and flashes of "I have no idea what we're doing".  for me it's not enough. hopefully for others it is.

for the record of the newest leaks today I like #2 the best.  Better is still the best in my opinion followed by  Madagascar.

#3556 Re: Guns N' Roses » Song #2 (Unknown Title) » 888 weeks ago

These should be numbers #2 and #3 if we arent' sure of the names. I'm not sure which one you guys are talking about.

#3557 Re: Guns N' Roses » Riyadh and the Bedouins leak » 888 weeks ago

I agree with James. It's a  mess. Flashes of greatness, flashes of suckiness and flashes of forgetableness. Pretty much par for the course with all the CD era songs.

#3558 Re: Guns N' Roses » Riyadh and the Bedouins leak » 888 weeks ago

I'll listen to it but you know what sucks? When I logged in just now and saw this recent news my heart did not skip a  beat nor did my pulse increase . Massive difference from the 2006 leaks. *sigh*

Ok, name 3 bands that have come out in the last 3-4 years that are any good being played on the radio??  I don't know about where you live but radio here (not including Sirius or XM) only plays Foo Fighters, Kid Rock, or Weezer and Linkin Park new songs. Everything else is 90's rock, with some 70's & 80's mixed in. I cannot name 1 new band aside from cheapass crap like Fallout Boy or the other crappy band that sounds like them. The Killers are ok.

Well like you said The Killers, Silversun Pickups,  Neverending White Lights(Canadian), City and Colour(Canadian). That's four right there that are far and away better(in my opinion) than Death Cab for Cutie. My point here is Death Cab is nothing special and have built a fake reputation. Just so it's clear I'm not saying you or anyone on this site listens to music for image sake. It's obvious that all of us hear have a  good ear for music and what we decide to listen to is a legit decision. My point is a band like Death Cab is being swallowed up by fake music fans who's attention span is next to zero. they heard it on teh O.C. so it must be cool.  Teeny boppers are buying a  band like Death Cab cause they're "indie" and that in itself gives their cd/music collection some credibility. In my opinion it's an embarassment that when one critic hails a band other music journalists tend to follow like sheep and fans follow likewise.  An example being the Cure's last album. Hailed by critics and fans upon release yet a year down the road most all critics label it as a "for diehard fans only" type of album and oddly enough the fans hailing it a year earlier were now agreeing with the critics.   All in unison their opinions on the album coincided. What the hell is that?    I own a Death Cab cd, I had to see what all the hype was about and what I came to realize was that the hype was all about hype and not substance.  They don't do anything different or special. In fact I find them extremely boring. The feather in their cap was they were on the O.C. and endorsed by celebrity "indie geek" Adam Brody so they get on the mainstreme radio while a kickass band like The National  flounders on myspace pages.  We'll have to agree to disagree PaSnow but in my opinion when a band has been given every opportunity to become really popular and they aren't that says enough for me to believe(and know to an extent) that they are as much industry hype as the latest Britney album.

And for the record there's nothing wrong with Foo Fighters and Weezer;)

I'm having a  hard time articulating tonight. Novel sized posts. just as annoying for me to type out as they are for you guys to read:haha:

Death Cab for Cutie & My Morning Jacket are two bands who should be more popular. Had they come onto the scene in the mid-late 90's they'd be as big as Matchbox 20 or Jimmy Eat World. Instead, they're sheltered away in a small following with a myspace page.

I could not disagree more. Those are two bands who are extremely overrated. Especially Death Cab. They're two bands who have been idolized in Indie circles because they're supposedly "hip" and "trendy" not for their music but for what they represent. Falsly representing mind you.  Nevermind they're not indie anymore,  they're on major labels but they've been put into this phoney Indie category. It's more about image.  The image that follows with liking an "indie" band is well.. you know... legit roll . You earn this badge of credibility if you like them. Kind of the way Arcade Fire was popular. A band that was o.k. but extremely overrated cause every music mag said you need to like them so people did cause it made them "cool".  Death Cab was featured on the O.C. and was loved by that guy Adam Brody. His celebrity status pushed them to the forfront and made them "indie" poster children.  That's a band that has had everything done to make them popular. Copy cat reviews by every music jounalist who say the exact same thing about them because even they've been fooled into thinking they need to endorse them, tv soundtracks, celebrity endorsements, you name it yet they're still not a really big band. Why? Cause honestly the music is mundane and boring. If someone legitimately enjoys their music that's cool but in my opinion the majority of people listening to those bands are doing so more for the image than anything.  The majoirty of them are the type of music listener who trys their best to shun top 40 simply cause it's top 40.  Liking Death Cab is simply the "right" thing to do.

That's a  long ramble. not even sure if my point came across. hmm

And sadly James I have to agree pretty much 100% with CC's comments regarding MIA. I enjoy some of her stuff but honestly to most people a very good chunk of it just comes across as noise. Even to true music fans. She's not he type of artist that would ever be topping mainstreme  radio or singles charts or headlining arenas.
