#351 Re: Guns N' Roses » Rankings/comments on all the new songs » 873 weeks ago
1. Better
2. Catcher in the Rye
3.There Was a Time
4. Song 2
5. Chinese Democracy
6. Shackler's Revenge
7. Riyadh
8. IRS
9. Madagascar
10. The Blues
11. If The World
Comments: Better and CITR are the only two gems for me. Better is by far my favorite track of the bunch. I loved it from the first time I heard it. I've listened to this song more than any other song I own. To me this is the only track that I could see being a huge hit. I really love CITR, too, but not as much as Better. After the first 4 tracks (especially 7-11) I found it tough to rank them because none of them really stand out to me. To me they are all pretty interchangeable. They are average to slightly above average tunes to me. Somewhat catchy, but they aren't very memorable. If this was the album I'd say it's a respectable follow up to the Illusions, but it's not a classic and like James I wouldn't even consider it album of the year.
Fave old songs
SCOM
Nightrain
You Could Be Mine
It's So Easy
Don't Cry
Estranged
NR
WTTJ
Civil War
Don't Damn Me
Perfect Crime
Ain't It Fun

I have seriously considered removing the VR section because no one uses it and the only time people want to talk about VR is in the GNR section when something CD related happens. If VR fans refuse to post in a VR section, the section is worthless.
Well in all fairness there's not a lot to discuss in the VR world until they find a new singer or until Slash releases his solo album. Whichever happens first.

Thats a bit unfair. I hate Prostitute. I certainly don't live in the past. Someone having issues with the music isn't a big deal. Its when threads related to Chinese Democracy get massively hijacked with old band discussion that its going too far. If someone thinks the old band is better and that's their main contribution to a Chinese Democracy thread, then a wise thing to do would be saying that in the section aimed at the old band. Same goes with VR.
Discussion doesn't get stifled or censored here. It would just be best for all members here if these discussions can go in the proper place.
Lets say you take a month long vacation and there's a leak when you get back. When you come here to see what leaked, are you gonna be happy if instead of the info you are looking for you see people saying how great Slash was in 1991?
Well I don't mean to imply this site censors anyone because I believe this site in the best site for intelligent GNR discussion on the net.
I just mean it seems there is always a small handful of fans that react negatively to anyone who isn't really enthusiastic about the new material which I think is unfair. In this debate we had fans telling others that they are actually being dishonest with their feelings and simply dislike it because it doesn't feature Slash on it. I just thought that was ridiculous.
I agree if someone is just here to bash the band then that doesn't have a place here, but like I said it is only natural for the fans to compare the old vs the new. It's what fans do. It would happen even if the original band recorded CD. I agree if someone is just going to talk about how good Slash was almost 20 years ago that is a silly, but I don't see the offense if someone is saying they don't feel the material is on par with the classics. I'm sure when the album is released people will want to rank the albums to see how it stacks up against the other albums. Like I said that's what fans do. I'm a big Oasis fan and I know one of the very first discussions with each new release is how the new album stacks up against the previous releases.

Amazingly beautiful. I think I'll be picking up this disc. I listened to the samples on Amazon and it sounds pretty good.

The world is biased. My time on the internet over the past 10 years, countless media articles, concert experience, and YES, even discussions with GNR's band members and associates have led me to this assessment.
So the *only* reason someone would be unimpressed with this material is because they are biased?

Yeah that's a good point. I've driven to Best Buy many time just to get the "extra material" on CDs or DVD's that only they offer. Like the Kissology DVD's and The Who "Amazing Journey" DVD. I guess since Best Buy will be the only ones selling "Chinese Democracy" they can sell it as is and skimp on the extras. Bummer.
Here's how the Eagles put out "Long Road out of Eden" last year. Which BTW took about 6 years to make.
10/30/07: 2CD release featuring 20 songs (90 minutes of new music). For the first year after the album's initial release, the album will be available in North America exclusively via the band's website, or through Wal-Mart and Sam's Club retail stores. Internationally, it will be commercially available through traditional retail outlets.11/30/07: Deluxe Collector's Edition released featuring two bonus tracks, Included a 40 page booklet with lyrics, credits, exclusive photos.
Interesting the parallels with the Eagles. That was their first new studio album since 1979. They rewarded their fans definitely. Aside from the fact they had to go to Wal Mart. But they also sold it through their website which Guns should definitely do.
Yeah, I mostly buy at Best Buy these days just to get those extras.
I think it is likely we'll see more than one version and I think it's likely it will come in a similar manner to what the Eagles did. Azoff seems to be about maximizing profits so that would make sense. He knows the diehards will go out and buy the cd right away and then would go out and buy a special edition when it is released.
#357 Re: Guns N' Roses » The Upside of a Best Buy deal » 873 weeks ago
I think that might backfire. I think it would piss off a lot of people that couldn't get the album during the first week for whatever reason. Not to mention they'd lose money on the LE's that didn't sell that first week.

monkeychow, I completely agree with your post.
Wow, Acquiesce, you certainly are seeing something I don't if you think people with negative reactions get shouted down. Negative is the name of the game here. It's embraced and worn as a badge of honor.
I understand what you mean. There is a negativity here about how the whole CD saga has been handled over the years (and rightfully so IMO), but I'm talking about the reaction to the songs which is a different beast. I would say the reaction to the actual music is very positive on the whole, but when there is a negative reaction that person is written off as someone who is biased because they live in the past.
But how do new band fans ever 100% judge a negative review on the band and their music, as the gospel? Who do we believe? How can we believe? When 9 times out of 10, if I were to take ANY new GN'R song, tell someone on the street it's old GN'R, and they'd foam all over it. But if I tell them it's new GN'R, they'd spit venom of hate against it. If I tell them it's a new band on the scene, they'd most likely be neutral to positive (which has been the case in the last few years).
The old vs. new argument is tired, I agree, but the old fans have to see the new fans side of the argument. It's tough to believe critics and old fans alike, when WE know that if Slash were to replace Robin tomorrow, suddenly the new band would be validated... and that's simply not fair to anyone involved in Guns from 1997/98 to the present.
This argument is silly. This is your supposition. There is no fact based in your statement. I could easily turn it around and say that if Axl was not associated with these songs that 9 out of 10 of the fans that currently praise the songs wouldn't be foaming at the mouth over these songs and comparing them to the Illusions and GNR classics. This type of argument doesn't prove a thing except how arrogant and biased you are to think the world would agree with you unless they are biased.
I can't judge the album as a whole since we obviously don't have the final version, but so far I think the material is good, but unspectacular. So far from what we've heard CD is a decent album, but it's nothing groundbreaking and it isn't a classic. So I don't know why it is so shocking to some that it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I do think it is a respectable follow up to the Illusions, BTW.

When Best Buy releases a limited edition version of an album it is used as an incentive to purchase the album at BB instead of another retailer. Since it is going to be an exlusive there isn't that incentive, but maybe they will release an expanded version. I'd imagine there is a strong possibility we'll see multiple versions since Uni wants to squeeze out every last penny they can on this album.

yeah i wish those arguments would stop too .... alot of times though its the aparent diehard of NuGnR that seem to start with messed up comments which virtually dare an oldschool to respond...to get rid of these types of off course debates it needs to be a whole board effort to refrain from posting anythign which will start the same old debate...
i dont think i have ever hidden that Slash is one of my guitar idols...someone disses him its hard to refrain from defending him...itd be the same with you bri if someone says shit about BH...while we're on the subject can the BH vs BBF comments go away too (not directed at you Bri)
I completely agree with everything you said, but I can see how this old debate constantly gets started when it's only natural people would compare the old material vs the new.
One thing concerns me though it seems like anyone with a negative reaction gets shouted down and written off as someone who is biased because they live in the past. I don't think that's fair because I think someone can be a fan of the old band and remain objective to the new material. Some of the fans of new material certainly aren't the most objective in the world either when some are such Axl diehards that they convinced themselves this album was going to be great before any leaks ever appeared. I just wish people could speak their opinion without being labelled and shouted down. I'm saying this as someone who is a fan of the old band who also enjoys the current material.
