#351 Re: Guns N' Roses » GN'R 2021 Tour Thread » 176 weeks ago

Huh, I finally managed to track down that second guest appearance by Pink on the tour, at Bottlerock 2021. Seems like the only person who bothered to film it was this drunk guy, who doesn't know how to spell "Patience".

This is demonstrably untrue; you just need to look at the last show from the tour where he's belting out Hard Skool and Paradise City with full rasp.

If we were to rank replacement members in the band surely DJ would come last? Maybe Frank is in the mix but that's not his fault.

I’m no fan of DJ, but how is he anymore out there than Melissa?

Were you upset about Teddy Zig Zag? I actually think Melissa brings valuable backup vocals for Axl. Don’t care what she does on the electronics.

Yeah, Melissa's vocals add a nice layer of texture to the songs.

I fully expect Atlas/reworked OMG.

I would’ve said no way to OMG being redone, due to Axl saying back when it came out that Duff and Slash weren’t interested in working on the song.

But after we’ve gotten Slash playing Silkworms with Absurd, I’d say anything is on the table now.

Yeah. Of the demo tracks, the ones that just need a spit and polish are Perhaps, Atlas Shrugged, Oh My God and State of Grace (they need some actual lyrics for that shouty bit, mind). They could probably do something with Eye On You, too, it just needs verse lyrics.

And if Axl can work up some lyrics (or already has done) then Quicksong and Oaklahaoma come into play. I also like Zodiac 13, but that one feels a bit on the industrial borderline for Slash to work on (then again, as you said, if he's done Absurd then anything's on the table).

Doing something different was exactly what nu gnr needed. They could never recreate the magic of the old band so why try? Axl had the right idea, but unfortunately the rest of the world sort of killed it.

If he had been able to truck on with that lineup until the fanbase got used to it I think they could have reaped great rewards. It's much easier to forget the old band when you turn up as something completely different, yet good. With Ashba and Co it pretty soon turned into a nostalgia band and the question then becomes "why not just bring back Slash?".

Yup. There was genuine curiosity about the new line-up, and in Buckethead they had an iconic figure who could act as a focus of attention in the same way as Slash (it's telling that even half a decade later, casuals, magazine articles and comedians were still referencing "the guy in the KFC bucket" long after he was out of the band). You need someone who's recognisable by their silhouette.

If they'd sorted out their management, got the record company behind the new band and CD, and coordinated their promo, there were a couple of opportunities to redefine GN'R as the CD line-up.

1) VMAs 2002. If Axl's voice had been in shape, and they'd come out of the gates with a one-two punch of Chinese Democracy and TWAT, or WTTJ and Better, or something, instead of that bizarre WTTJ/Madagascar/Paradise City medley. Songs where you showcase each of the lead guitarists and their unique tone, basically, and unapologetically blast out some new stuff. And then say, "The album is out in x weeks."

2) The 2006 tour. If they'd managed to retain Buckethead, and the continuity of the new line-up. As it was, frantically subbing in Bumblefoot left everyone confused, and started the "revolving door" of guitarists. Promo was completely fucked by the time they got around to doing the Better video; it was "introducing" like seven band members, and the two lead guitarists were no longer in the band by that point. Bumblefoot, for all his guitar skills, just wasn't as iconic a figure as Buckethead. And Robin and Fortus' idea of just sticking with two guitarists was terrible. Yes, they could play the songs, but by that point the public had latched onto Buckethead as the defining figure of nu GN'R, and his absence could only leave the band looking diminished.

But Axl's voice was on top form, and with a stable line-up (which meant coherent promo) and an album release they would've killed it.

Ashba… I'm not quite sure how to articulate it but there's something off about him. He's a poseur, aping Slash's performance but without the soul. It's kind of like comparing Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker to Jared Leto's performance. The former is effortless, the latter a try-hard desperately trying to look edgy in Hot Topic gear.

I will be interested to hear what slash and duff added to the other songs.

On the other tracks it sounded like they just muted the old guitars and recorded slash over - which while cool isn't as much as I would like to see Slash do on some of the others. Like Atlas to me was the basis of a really cool song - but it's current structure without anything else it sort of went no-where - it was a bit like if we'd heard estranged with no slash guitars. What I'd like to see is slash add stuff to them properly...like add in a new guitar melody to go with the verses or a new bridge or something but I think the nature of this project (keeping most of the existing instruments etc) means we won't see too much of that.

Some of the songs like State of Grace I think will be great to have finished though.

I guess i'm saying i'm fine that they're doing CD2 songs, by wish is that it was more collaborative creatively - but from the last batch it was more like Slash and Duff took a finished song, and just covered the bass/guitar parts and left it otherwise.

I'm not sure that's entirely fair. I mean, with Hard Skool they clearly stripped out the extended intro and rejigged the structure, and I'm prepared to bet that was all Duff ("Why is there a minute of guitar noodling at the start? Drum crash, bass line, off we go.").

Looking back on this period, it was honorable to let that charity album have Civil War exclusively but was a mistake in hindsight.

The fact it entered heavy rotation on Rock and top 40 stations gave little incentive to buy it...and many places didn't have it for long.

Should've released it as a single so it could properly chart and it allows the possibility of Down on the Farm as a B side.

They could've released it as a single to promote the charity album, with the profits going to the charity.

Crash diet? big_smile

Not a proper GNR song....same with Bring It Back Home and Just Another Sunday.

Axl and West Arkeen demos.

I guess they could still use them but it's probably unlikely.

I dunno, if they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for additional material they could do a cheeky re-record like they did with Shadow of Your Love.

#GunsNRoses was trending on Twitter today and I have no idea why.

Maybe because of the crowd deaths at the Travis Scott gig? People were throwing up comparisons all day to responsible artists who stopped shows to allow the crowd room to breathe. Of course, GN'R famously had those crowd deaths at Donington, and Axl inciting a riot in St Louis… but they also had multiple instances of Axl stopping the show and telling the crowd to "take two steps back".
