To put it in GnR terms, I sort of think of Madden as the Slash of color commentary.  He's not a perfect player and sometimes makes mistakes but he puts a lot of heart and personality into what he does and he's been able to create a bigger than life image out of it.

Since I got asked about LA Guns on the "introduce yourself" thread and since Axl Rose and Tracii Guns have played together in both GnR and LA Guns I thought I'd start a thread about the band since I don't see one already.  Another fun fact, Gilby Clarke has also recorded and played live with LA Guns.  He was credited as an additional guitarist on LA Guns "Shrinking Violet" which featured Jizzy Pearl on vocals.  He has also played live with Tracii's version of LA Guns recently.  Anyway, let's talk some LA Guns here.

After Tracii Guns left LA Guns to pursue Brides Of Destruction he gave his blessing to the remaining members of LA Guns to carry on without him and they did.  Phil Lewis, Steve Riley and Adam Hamilton brought in a lot of fill in guitarists to gig with until they hired Stacey Blades to record with.  After two great albums, Hamilton left and they hired Scott Griffin to replace him last year.  I've seen the latest incarnation of that band twice and it's the best live version yet IMO.

Last year Tracii decided to put together a second version of the band with "original" members Paul Black and Nicky Alexander to celebrate it's 20th anniversary and has continued to tour (pretty successfully) with his version of the band.  I have yet to see them live but from what I've heard from other people and seen on YouTube it's a mixed bag of good and not so good.  Nonetheless I'd definitely pay to see them live if they ever come close to Charlotte.

Charlotte NC?  I lived in Rock Hill, South Carolina breifly and lived on the coast in a town called Manteo (near Nags Head).

Yep.  I'm familar with Manteo too but I haven't been to the NC coast in 20 years now.  I definitely miss it.

BTW I started an LA Guns thread in the "There Was A Time" section so as to not jack this thread.

I'm a flip-flopper when it comes to Madden though, just when I start to like him he says something that makes me want to toss something through the tv.

I still remember this exchange from a few years ago:

Michaels: He had all kinds of time to throw that ball.
Madden:  Yeah, the key word there is "all kinds of time".

Given, it's live tv and they don't have the luxury of a script, so dumb things will come out from time to time, but they happen A LOT with Maddden.

This is one of the things I like about Madden actually.  It's entertaining to me to hear him say stuff like that.

One thing I always hated about Madden is how he is a bandwagon jumper. In the 80's his team was the 49ers, in the early/mid 90's Dallas, late 90's the Packers, list goes on and on. Whichever team is winning is who he likes. I know alot of people do that, even other broadcasters, but Madden is so blatant about it and its nerve wracking. I haven't liked him since the 80's, and the way he was practically giving Aikman blowjobs from 92-95 was vomit inducing. Since then I have had no desire to listen to him during a game. Then when Dallas started to slide, he jumped on Favre's crotch. Pathetic.

I hated the 49ers and Cowboys but I understood why he came across that way.  As the lead announce team for CBS and Fox, Summerall and Madden were assigned to cover the best teams in the NFC year in and year out so they were close to those teams during their prime.  Madden is a football guy through and through and when you're watching the best team in football live and in person week after week, getting to meet the players, etc, etc it's not hard to get to like the team, players and organization, especially when those guys know you as a Super Bowl winning coach and the best color analyst in the business.  Another reason I Madden was so blatant about liking those teams is that it helped sell those teams to the casual viewer and helped hook them in.  When I first started watching football as a kid, I hung on the words of the commentators in order to understand the game and the league.  I take a lot of that for granted now but when I was a kid, guys like Summerall, Madden, Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen made it easy to appreciate the teams I was watching by being more insightful than just explaining the Xs and Os.  They really brought the teams and players to life while explaining what was going on during the game in such a way that a kid could understand that.  I'm 36 now and I sometimes forget when I'm listening to one of these guys "over simplify" something or ramble on about something aside from the game that they're doing it for the casual or inexperienced viewer and not for me.

I didn't get to watch the games yesterday but generally speaking I think that both Michaels and Madden do a great job.  I think John Madden doesn't get enough credit for his insights because of his personality in the booth and the fact that he occassionally makes mistakes.  For years he carried Pat Summerall on CBS and Fox and breathed life into Summerall's nuts and bolts play by play style.  Al Michaels has been the class of the NFL play by play guys for years now and I think that he and Madden make a good pair.

What other tandem does as good of a job or a better job than Michaels and Madden?  The MNF crew isn't very good at all and I can't think of any network announce teams that consistantly deliver like Michaels and Madden.

It seems like Obama is the early favorite for sure but then again the same was said about Dean in '04.  Nonetheless, whether it's Obama or Clinton that wins the nomination I believe that John Edwards will be asked to be the VP on the ticket.  Obama and Clinton are the two front runners but there's no way that a Presidential ticket with a black man and a woman can win the Presidency at this point.  I'm not bashing here I just believe that America is just not ready for that.  John Edwards is the kind of guy that voters are used to and he'll bring a sense of normality to the ticket that is needed for the Democrats to win the White House in '08.

Hey I'm Q.  I'm a long time fan of early GnR/Hollywood Rose (pre UYI) and anything with the name LA Guns on it.  Those of you that read the Metal Sludge boards know who I am and those of you that read Metal-Blast.com have seen my interviews and the Van Halen Instant Review we did on the first night of their big reunion tour.  Anyway this is a cool site and I'm glad to be a part of the forum.

Any of you MySpacers that want to add me can go to www.myspace.com/the_metal_blast_page or www.myspace.com/the_cusack and send me an add request.

Good to see you here Cusack. Yeah, Metal Blast is a cool site. Saw the link while lurking at Sludge awhile back and signed up.

Thanks man.  I've been meaning to check this site out for a while.  GnR used to be my favorite band and I've still got a few old bootlegs and care about the history of the band and that sort of thing so it's cool to see a site like this in existance that looks great, seems to have quality content and provides a place for people who care about the phenomenon that was (is?) Guns N Roses.  I'm still getting acclimated to this site and starting to rework our site so I'm not sure how much I'll post right away but I'll definitely be around.  21

I've posted at various forums in the past but since I got sucked into the music forums by Metal Sludge I've signed up at a lot of different places but I stick to Metal-Blast (the site that I help run), LAGuns.Net, Tracii's LA Guns board, Metal Sludge and I signed up here because Mr. Jameslofton signed up at our forum at Metal-Blast.com and has been posting occassionally.
