The drumming is pretty awesome and much improved from Sorum's nondescript work on the Illusions albums.

But I think I would've preferred Freese on 80% of the finished record and the drums much higher in the mix.

The early leaks sound good for a reason. Tommy/Josh were on their way to becoming the new Duff/Stevie.

This one captures the meaning of the title on more than one level.

I think when I looked into it back in the day that the 2nd cover Apex posted above is also Japanese in origin.

Wagszilla, thanks for the background. That puts the cover art in a while new light.

I stand corrected. It is Chinese in origin.

The artwork is "Beating The Princess" from "Peking Opera" series, 1997 by Liu Zheng.

Interesting year. Interesting backstory,.

I don't have much to add here although the random samples seem to me recall Axl's past/childhood.

It sounds like a church choir, dramatic drums, a child's mobile before he tells about his glory days in California.

The tone of the solo reminds me of:

Unskippable intro:
"Go ahead... say something"
"How are we supposed to ______ if you don't say something"

Other Commentary:

  • Supposedly The Scorpions influenced Axl to become a singer although I haven't seen that corroborated

  • "Physical Graffiti" by Led Zeppelin and "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd were named album influences

  • Beck, Trent Reznor, Moby named as Producer influences

  • Axl was taken by DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing..." album and Crystal Method's "Vegas" albums in the early days of the project

  • Axl was reportedly a Nine Inch Nails fan which would've started with "Pretty Hate Machine". Not too much "Downward Spiral" influences, in my view.

Please add to as you see fit.

Commentary:

Axl liked Crystal Method's "Vegas" record quite a bit.

This track reminds me a lot of the bridge in "Silkworms"

Lyrics inspired by ex-girlfriends and Arab terrorists who do horrid things to women

The least finished track on the album reminds me of Axl trying to bridge the gap back to the Appetite sound

And this

I get Praxis vibes from this too but these are more overt

There was also some Beatles reference if I remember a Bumble interview correctly

#399 Re: Guns N' Roses » Dissecting Chinese Democracy: Track 14 - Prostitute » 391 weeks ago

DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing" seems to have influenced Better, Madagascar, and Prostitute with the hip-hop groove and heavy sampling.
