#411 Re: Guns N' Roses » Now on sale for $7.99 at Best Buy » 821 weeks ago
Define failure.....
The only reason it can be perceived as failure is the expectations behind it. Gold isn't failure. However, when you see it was expected to go multi platinum here, gold certainly reeks of lukewarm success.
Best Buy clearly made a mistake buying so many upfront copies, and that falls on them. However, they bought into the forum hype like everyone else did. Once D day arrived and even nutswingers who said it was gonna destroy Contraband for years started saying "sales don't matter", it was obvious that all parties involved were between a rock and a hard place.
The album's buzz out of the gates(what little there was) was immediately destroyed. This album should have went on sale in its second week of release, and stayed on sale until every last copy was gone.
Best Buy would have had better luck trying to sell a bottle of goat piss for 200 bucks than selling Chinese Democracy for $15.99 in December 2008. Trying to sell LPs that had been plucked from ground zero of a nuclear blast didn't help their cause either.
They didn't react to the facts on the ground, so now they're stuck with almost a million copies.
Good thoughts, James.
Gold is indeed not nessesarily a failure. For every album in the store you got to buy, there's 100 others you never even heard of. For every album in the store, there's probably 500 albums not even sold there that have people trying to start or keep their careers going. Made up numbers, of course, but the amount of music produced is STAGGERING.
But Chinese's launch wasn't what we expected, but it seems like it didn't have anywhere else to go based on what was and wasn't happening. The ingrediants add up to what we got.
Failure after a hard push is one thing ("wow, wild ride"), lukewarm with no push is just dissapointing ("what happened?").

Maybe if Axl made a guest appearance on Hannah Montana as Uncle Axl, they could drop a few hundred thousand in a week doing that.

Fan edits being hoarded?
Comedy gold, Jerry. Comedy gold!
That's how fucking stupid the fan base is. No wonder they hate us.
No kidding.
Wait, meaning the band?
Or the hoarders?
Cause I imagine both to be true.

And when he mentioned a trilogy, when did he ever say they'd be released simulataneously? Excuse me if I missed that, but I don't ever recall hearing or reading that. In that radio interview he mentioned the 3 albums that would be released one by one followed by touring.
When he himself described "The Plan" -
On 08/26/02, during the last European show in Docklands Arena, London, the album issue was brought up again.
"There's been some concern. That if we play five or six new songs, then there can't that many more on the album. Au contraire, mon frére. We're just playing the songs we're not considering putting out as singles or anything. So, you'll get 18 songs, and about 10 extra tracks. And when that, when the record company feels that has run its course, then you'll get it all over again. By that time, I should be done with the third album. So we'll see if all goes well boys and girls." (Axl, Docklands, 08/26/02)
A total number of around 60-70 songs was said to have been in the works at the time, with 41 of them A-listed. Axl's numbers implied that after CD would be out along with the extra tracks, there'd be around 13 tracks left on the A-list, with another 20-30 on the B-list. Another album (without another EP) with the same amount of material would've left 15-25 songs in reserve, which would've been sufficient for three separate albums.
Obviously, somethings didn't work so well boys and girls.
No bonus tracks/B-sides, only 14 song album, and they actually DID put out the live show material as a single (Chinese).

Thanks for putting that up there, James. I feel like many fans have a short memory when it comes to that (or just weren't around for it). It's been like a broken record.
Yes, indeed, Axl is the source of every 'trilogy' rumor/thought/speculation, and he's the source, ultimately, of whatever insane number of "songs" that are "done" talk.
For people to say "Axl never said that" are out of their mind.
Yeah, what's realistic NOW and what he'd like to see NOW may have changed, but it's not like the fans made it up. He started it. And he can tell us otherwise any time he'd like.

Though I doubt the song is about the fans, or self-referential regarding Chinese Democracy, I cannot make a good interpretation of:
"When you should have turned to the hearts of the ones that you could not save"
'ones that you could not save' is repeated, but I cannot figure out what that means.

That may have been the only time in the history of the universe that Neil Diamond, Christmas Album, and Guns N' Roses were ever used in a coherant sentence together. And I'm very happy about it.
#418 Re: Guns N' Roses » Rapidfire Recordings for sale (5 Unreleased Axl Demos from 1983) » 823 weeks ago
Too Much Too Soon and Just Another Sunday would have been cool Axl solo album cuts.
I think theyy would have been a better cut than Get In The Ring....
Does anyone know if those were Izzy songs or Slash songs or Axl songs, what were they?

The only GnR demo I ever liked was Crash Diet, so yeah joining the rest of you on this, they have historical interest at best, but probably sound like monkey-kack.
I bet they sound better than the UYI demos we have.
Aren't the UYI demos we have copies of copies? This guy is cashing in on his original multitrack masters.
Even if it was home done, etc... I bet it's better than Shannon Hoon's cassette of 'Don't Cry' he got back in Indiana in the 80's .

A thread on HTGTH-
http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/boar … ic=54744.0
There was a Facebook note sent from "GNR" about new official merchandise page. Sure enough, the Interscope site ALSO links to it.
(Of course GunsNRoses.com isn't updated about it).
Then elsewhere in the thread people link to other places to find GNR merchandise, which has OTHER stuff this store doesn't have, and it's "official".
Why and how can there be multiple online shops/retailers/makers? I assume there's probably warehouses full of old, old stuff from 2002 even.
And didn't Slash design the classic logo? Wasn't that going to be discontinued? Didn't Axl make a note about Merck making a buck off of old-themed merchanise?
I'd have posted this there but I'm banned.
