In '02, Axl established a pattern of not completing a perfectly releasable album.
The VMAs were the nail in the coffin.
The gossip on the streets was a release was finally imminent.
Axl biffs it and then gives an unequivocal "we're gonna do another round of recording" and "soon is not the word".
A dog ate my homework on live TV after a shaky performance.
Ouch.
The last train to CD redemption went away with the Dec '06 letter about CD's release and Merck's dismissal. Team Brazil had taken over.
I think it was March 2007 to be more incisive.
It's the equivalent of a new restaurant saying come back in three months as a filibuster to open up shop and then ducking under the register when people actually show up. What a fucking horror show.

Gossiping about the worst guitarist and shows in New GNR history.
This is getting depressing guys.

It finally kicked in what Sorry is about in the greater framework of the album.
I miss that guy who used to post obscurant industry whispers.
What an album. Thanks again, Axl.

Relevant quote from the China Exchange:
Audience:
The music industry is going through a pretty tricky time. And obviously different artists seem to be dealing with it different ways. You have Radiohead self-releasing things, then you have people like Morrisey that really wants to have- belong to a label and have that security. Where do you stand on that and where to you see the music industry going into the future business wise.Axl:
Well, to me, in the late 90s to now, it's like the heads of record companies realized- and it's not just my opinion, they've said it to me. It's like I tell people- I don't get fights with people in the music industry I get in fights with people that are the music industry. They realized that for their business they don’t- why deal with a band. All they need is a star and a producer. Somebody that they feel is a star and a producer. And if they- they don't even care who writes what or how [???] or what it sounds like. They can be a genuine fans of music. Say the record company owner/president, whatever, but when it comes to their business it doesn't have anything to do with that. It just has to do with what is going to be the easiest, what is going to make the most money and work, make their company and shareholders happy and stuff like that. Which I can respect that in a sense, but as an artist and a musician and working with bands it doesn't help me, you know, at all, and I don't think it helps music. It doesn't help the bands become self-sufficient and successful. They've got to work a lot harder 'cause the labels more are worried about them making the money.
.
They could, quite possibly, just say "hey, I got thirty songs, let's re-record them with a rawer sound."
I doubt it.
It's red tape and it's Chinese Democracy II repackaged. The label wouldn't want this. Slash and Duff wouldn't want this. Rick Rubin wouldn't want this.
It's in everybody's interest to strike while the iron's hot. CD II could be in play down the road but once the music engine has more steam behind it but really it's gonna get the most interest after Axl's retired or in the great Taco Bell stand in the sky.

I suppose an argument could be made that Axl is warming to being a public-facing persona but the new music thing needs some combination of interview rounds, the award shows circuit, and a non-iconoclastic music video, all of which are borderline sacrosanct to Axl's personage.
He will have to be in the right headspace, offload some to his cohorts, and probably dig deep into the cellar in the personal fitness department.
It'll be interesting.

I like Rubin's work considering I own a lot of it.
In particular, I like his work with Johnny Cash and the production on Audioslave's debut album. He stripped it back and brought influences Johnny never would've thought of (Bonnie Prince Billy, NIN, etc). The former pleases GN'R purists and the latter pleases Axl. So if true, it seems like a good fit.
The whole band sounds sharp on TSI and the production shows this off. Clink doesn't have the clout of Rubin but they're not dissimilar in their production styles.
I'm not holding my breath for Jesus, either.

Hey Walker, can you be a bro and post Silkworms?
I wanna hear that song
#440 Re: Guns N' Roses » Potential for a politically charged album? » 399 weeks ago
The common cutdown is that musicians, artists, and so forth tend to be "champagne socialists".
I don't know with any precision what Axl, Slash, Duff's political views and personal beliefs are but I found Duff's screed a year or two ago to be generally embarrassing and intellectually vacuous.
I think no album is to be forthcoming and even worse, this thread will be another reason for people to get into forum wars over nonsense.
