GnR is every bit as international as AC DC; their big advantage here in the states was market shrewdness.
It's not even marketing shrewdness. It's marketing common sense. Release a classic sounding single + do a video + tour behind it + promo the fuck out of it. Nothing earth shattering there, but apparently that's over Axl's head.
I agree 100%. There is some undercurrent we are not privy to; Axl is unhappy, the band is breaking up, a reunion is in talks, Axl is pulling away from UMG.....
I fully expect a shake up to occur at some level in the near term.

AC DC's people are great businessmen. Always have been.
In that article Brett linked, this caught my eye:
One interview we missed earlier in the week was Zane Lowe talking with Angus and Brian recently on BBC1. I highly recommend you give it a listen because, for once, the disc jockey doesn't try to make himself the star of the chat and he actually asks some intelligent questions of the guys. Just a note, the interview starts at approximately the 1 hour and 7 minute mark into the 2-hour broadcast and you must have Real Player installed to hear it.
It would have been nice to hear Axl talk about the state of the world too.

So the album sold less worldwide than Black Ice sold in its first week in the U.S.?
Sure puts things in perspective.
Like I mentioned in the week 2 sales thread, GNR need to monitor these worldwide statistics and aim promotion in the areas that are interested.
Well, apples and oranges. What did Black Ice do in the rest of the world compared to GnR?
The Walmart promotion was handled incredibly smart and roped thousands of rednecks into a banal, completely redundant trip down memory lane. But it was promoted well and made very accessible to people.
Promotion means a lot. A tour and press as well.

Great post Mr. Wonderful(Paul Orndoorf?). Cool to see a 'non die hard' offer their perspective.
I do agree that the album itself as a whole is its main selling point. I mentioned this weeks ago, but its like Led Zeppelin II(or maybe III) where the entire album has to be digested instead of being able to just cherry pick singles from it as the album's representation.
However, we live in an era propelled by catchy singles. So in that aspect, they have to grab a few songs and hope one sticks. Its an album without any guaranteed singles though.
Its an album that exists in the wrong time.
Well, I think in retrospect, the goal was to essentially pay off the label and move forward. Too much burnt advance cash relegated this to a strip it down and recoup what you can.
The US market didn't respond well to a progressive rock album but the rest of the world has fitfully enjoyed it. Good sales world wide, not spectacular.
Moving forward, I really wonder what happens to Axl's new band. Unless he has an ace up his sleeve, he has not caught America's attention. He needs to regain that focus or he simply cannot sell an acceptable number of records to justify the high cost of production. He may find that he needs to give the old band a call to get that kind of advance from the music industry.
#456 Re: Guns N' Roses » Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread » 864 weeks ago
Axl made his own bed.
It's a good album, I am disappointed a proper case isn't/wasn't made for people to hear it.
#457 Re: Guns N' Roses » Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread » 864 weeks ago
Not good to say the least.
Axl used CD to pay off his UMG credit card essentially.
I hope his reputation survives but I think even platinum is a stretch now. It is tough to make a case for this band to survive.

I don't think he made out on that 01/02 fiasco. I suspect Clear Channel may actually sued him to get back his advance.
#459 Re: Guns N' Roses » What did you expect? » 864 weeks ago
To put a positive spin on it, it is the top rock album in the US and should be the world No. 1 album when sales are released this week.
Unless Corky Butcher slipped in a new release this week without my knowing....

I saw the post on youtube and thought it was kinda funny and relevant.
Youtube is basically a troll factory. I don't think its a great sampling of the public. It COULD be, but the troll infestation prevents that.
Piss off loser.
C'mon Bono. You know better than that.
I'm sorry but a guy who follows my every post for the last week and responds to everything and anything they deem negative in their own little mind is a.... well let's move on.
I post on youtube here and there. I don't find all of the people who do so to be trolls. The post was relevant. KV can't comprehend that so oh well.
please finish your thought about my 'little mind'....
I seem to recall asking everyone to have a little patience and an open mind while you have been preaching doom and destruction based on your judgment of the album and its first week sales.
