I just wanna say it's a fucking pleasure to be on this forum at the moment, despite the shitty circumstances which are being discussed. It's amazing to me that we can have a thread like this one imparticular where everyone has a decent, relevant contribution, without loads of spam fanboy or hater messages, and nobody gets cranky because someone disagrees with them.
Massive props to tylerdurden for that hilarious long post on page 48. And also to Lofton: 'I don't care if they put Nat King Cole on it. Mix the shit properly.' LOL
It's just occurred to me that when the rest of the band hear the CD for the first time, they will probably all be gutted for various reasons, not least the production and mixing. As someone said, there are several things that point to what seems like a final 3-day rush job at the very end, with Axl fucking off all the engineers out of the room and just fucking about with shit trying to make it perfect and just totally wanking it all up.
All of this talk has reminded me of a heated debate I had with a good friend last May. I was blasting the leaks of that time in a private lock in in my pub and my friend was enjoying them, particularly things like the horns on Maddy, but when I told him these songs were from 1999 to 2002 mostly, he balked and basically said 'Well he's fucking missed it then, he's mental. He should have got it out years ago, this'll all sound ancient by the time it's out'. And I thought he was just talking shit and didn't understand how great Axl was, that the songs would sound timeless and that he's worked on them slowly over years and that they'd be as great as any old Floyd/Zappa shit he had when he was young.
I hate to say it but he was pretty much right. And that review (was it Classic Rock) was right when it said that people like Bowie put out records that sounded incredible and was this epic and innovative once a year back in the day.

It's so fucking bad it sounds like the fucking track is skipping!!!
FUCK, people.

I just gave in and downloaded the whole thing and listened.
I can't figure why people are raving about Riad. People made it sound like the intro was some Pitman masterpiece and had loads of crowd noise and that the track was substantially different. What I REALLY can't get over is the new pasted in lyrics after the solo right before 'Somewhere in time...'. They run right into the next line and it sounds absolutely ridiculous! I was really sceptical about Lofton's statements that the editing/pasting was so bad that new solos had been dropped in, starting and ending in different placfes to the original and therefore fucking up the flow/timing of the song but he's absolutely right.
I'm gobsmacked. Please, go and listen to Riad right now and pay attention at exactly 3:24-3:25 where there should be a pause between the lines 'If you had wove so well/Somewhere in time'. I'm absolutely staggered that this new line has just been dropped in when it doesn't physically fit and just runs right into the next line.
How the fuck is that possible?! Lofton is suggesting the album was forced out as an explanation. But surely, way back when they were sat there editing on pro tools and dropped the line in they must have played it back and gone 'Oh, that doesn't work...click undo!'. Or surely during what must have been countless hours of mixing and mastering, SOMEBODY noticed it?!!
Christ. It's so glaring that I can't believe it hasn't been picked up in any reviews.

Until you get to TIL
I completely respect your opinion and think it's great that every loves different songs, but I can't fathom how you don't like TIL's vocals. They are absolutely wrought with emotion; the really long 'goodbye' at the end absolutely killed me the first time I heard it. And the first verse, the way he goes from that beautiful new clean lower register straight up into a rougher high register is just perfect to me.

Over at Mygnr there's a review/interview with the singer from Pigeons of Death Metal and he has this to say about the sound/production:
Hughes, whose band recently released its third album, Heart On, was especially taken with the musicianship on the record, which he called "unparalleled." The LP's overall sound also impressed him.
"The production values had to be probably at the highest level of anything, and you can hear that immediately," he said. "There is not a lot of magic going on, in terms of making sh-- from nothing. These are real players, and this is the greatest karaoke band ever assembled. He pulled together some of the greatest talents from the last 16 years, so it's a lot of talent in one spot."

Olorin wrote:Terrible mixing on Catcher and TWAT, ruins the songs.
Yeah I noticed the same thing, cant believe those shit bells and whistles things are still on the TWAT intro. As a whole the demos of these 2 were much better. Catcher though would be amazing if they'd left Brian on it, but we all know that. TWAT just lacks something that the older versions had IMO.
One thing that this album does lack is really punchy, catchy intros. Instead we have intros like Scraped, IRS, Better (all TERRIBLE intros IMO). The only real stinker though here for me is This I Love. The vocals for Madagascar also sound pretty damn poor, it still sounds like a demo. Funny, but the let downs here for the most part are Axl's vocals and Ron's solos.
I couldn't disagree more; I love the Twat intro. I want to try and explain what I think it is/means, although it's kinda hard. You know in the Estranged video where they filmed Axl in the kid's room when he climbed up on top or the wardrobe(?) and went to sleep during the shoot and said it was the most peaceful sleep he'd had? Well a lot of the emotional shit he'd dealt with on the record goes in tandem with all his baggage about being abused, going through regressional therapy etc. The sounds in the Twat intro bring to my mind the sound of broken toys, kinda like the soundtrack in a manchild's head as he's emotionally cowering in some dark place or going back in his head to some time long ago.
I think that all of the pain over Steph that comes out in Twat will have resulted in serious despression (well, we know this for a fact) and that at times he will have been catatonic, like a beaten child, and just emotionally broken. That intro, the choir and those sounds are like a little soundtrack to that place.
What these idiotic music critics don't understand is that Axl is not some sodding kid in an idie band playing guitar and singing silly pop songs. The guy deals in heavy emotion. He gets severely clinically depressed and takes years to get over failed relationships. All of the sweeping, grand arrangements in the songs convey his mental and emotional landscapes. Just because you don't have those ups and downs doesn't mean they don't exist.
As for punchy, catchy intros, I couldn't give a toss. This isn't Appetite, it's not a bunch of songs about birds, drinking, drugs and sex. The Better intro is superb. Maybe the first and only time Axl has ever sung true falsetto ( funny that he doesn't sing falsetto when doing it live). It sounds completely unique and was magic last night when Zane Lowe played it. Like nothing else he played. When the songs ki9cks in with 'The hardest part...' that's the friggin punchy intro for you right there!
I love the IRS intro. Again, sounds so different to me. It's kinda cool to have a lower key beginning and intro to a song that, like Better, is a fairly standard verse/chorus/bridge/screamy bit format.
And lastly, how you can criticise Axl's vocals is absolutely beyond me. I too was hoping that Sod and Maddy would have amazing new vocals; I really thought those were rough, one-take demos. I'm especially cheesed off with the cut and paste job on the new SoD lyrics at the end. However, it is absolutely indisputable to me that Axl's vocals are overall totally magnificent. Go and listen to any of his contemporaries, whether the vocally bankrupt and shot Jon Bon Jovi or the monotonous Hetfield and compare their most recent efforts. Axl uses about 20 different fucking voices on this album, probably more, and uses technology and layering etc to create so many amazing sounds with his voice. You reckon Hetfield/Jovi etc could pull off an acapella intro like Scraped?! Dream on. If there's one thing that every fan, critic and hater should be able to agree on it's that Axl has just jumped up a hell of a lot higher in the list of all time greatest singers.

Just reading over this thread it's incredible how mixed the reviews are. I honestly think there's one point in this thread where each song is absolutely praised and then absolutely destroyed by someone else.
Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great thing and it only continues to whet my appetite for hearing it on Thursday!
Great point and something everyone should keep in mind. Remember when Axl said 'You'll like at least a few songs...'? This is an absolute melting pot of sounds across a record with great depths. I love most kinds of music and I love every single song on the record. I'm not getting hung up on the details. Imagine if we'd never heard a leak except that atrotious quality I.R.S from 5 years ago, we'd all being beating ourselves absolutely stupid right now without worrying about who plays which solo.
I really hope the other 10 or so unheard tracks out there don't leak and that for the next albums we all get to hear them for the first time the week before they're released.
Yes, we were absolutely fucking desperate, but in many ways, hearing all these leaks and demos has completely fucked up our enjoyment of the finished product and we're being ungrateful sods!

I'm not gonna bother with 128kbps files. If it doesn't leak in Flac before it's released then I don't wanna listen to low quality files and pretend it's anything like the vinyl.

Maddy is fake? Fuck. I guess I should test drive something before announcing its in the show room.....
I gotta say, this Maddy sounds so close to the older leak I reckon people are right and it's fake. Everything else so far has had more than enough changes to prove it's final, this is near identical.
On another note, I'm getting really cheesed off how none of the reviews are giving Axl any real credit for his vocals. I mean for FUCK'S sake, the range of voices he pulls out on this album is insane. How the fuck can anyone say 'he sounds old' or 'he sounds this/that/t'other'?? He sounds COMPLETELY FUCKING DIFFERENT on almost every track! On some tracks he uses 3 or more completely different voices, singing across a vast range in countless textures. The most anyone has said is 'still virile' and 'growling yelp' and some other bollocks. Critics fuck me off so much. And the biggest joke is that these fuckheads are meant to know what they're on about. If they had some kinda fucking clue then they wouldn't all praise completely different songs and aspects of the album based purely on knee-jerk reactions to what they like and dislike. You'd get a far more informed AND objective review from an intelligent hard-core fan in my opinion.
