It's funny, Monsters is a more immediately "catchy" song, but after several listens The General has definitely grown on me to the point where I think I prefer it. I really like the off-kilter, horror movie sound.

Me too.

I love the "rant" part of monsters in scream voice, but there's not a lot of song to go with it - just kinda a little bit of a rap chorus. I mean I like it but it gets old quick waiting for that part each listen.  I think the high parts of The General are more haunting. It's funny too as on first listen the general didn't really work for me, but now I really like it.

I think it needed a "breakdown" or "locomotive" style outro though. Like slash seems to be warming up to something right when it ends.

Same thing happened circa 2009 and 2010.

In the 2009 Asia shows Axl was doing stuff like TWAT and If The World, but by 2010 they were mostly gone again.

Do we have agreed upon chorus lyrics for the general?

I see a lyric site online has it as:

My only regret
Is that I never took the time to forgive
All those unspoken feelings
That were never spared
And those who understand
And lack self respect
And not the sordid meaning

I'm unsure about those last two lines, I hear all kinds of other possibilities in my ears - phrases like "laughed at your distress" or "not disordered meanings"  but it could be i'm just overthinking it????

You know how it goes with this stuff like if you listen to it with something in your head it sounds like that so I could be full of shit. Just wondering if there's any type of confirmed version or consensus?

What of State of Grace?

It had fairly completed vocals compared to a lot of he locker leaks...it would be weird if they just abandoned it. I would also like to see a Silkworms2Absurd style remake of Eye on You into a rock song.

I have long been a fan of both bands.

But I think people who dislike Slash are letting their preferences colour what they hear - Slash has long been capable of the occasional shred style run - yet every time he does one in a song - be it in Snakepit or here people rush to say it must be an overdub of someone else or maybe the rhythm guitarist stepping up or whatever.

The truth is while he's generally more 'aerosmith' style than a van halen style shredder, and while he doesn't have paul gilbert speeds like bucket, he DOES have sufficient speed to smash these licks as demonstrated by live versions of songs like Anastasia, Wicked Stone and others. He's shown on multiple occasions he can drop a modal scale run, or a harmonic minor in at blistering speed even if he isn't a 10 finger tapper and even if a lot of his famous riffs are varations on pentatonic forms.

My thoughts are:

1. The sound of the intro wah-riff over the verses is VERY slash style. The sort of dirty vibe he brings to songs.

2. The outro solo is also very Slash considering the repeatred phrases with Wah (this is a thing Slash does - like repeat a particular phase over and over with minor vatiations).

3. The speed might be off putting to 1990s era slash but is well within the types of solos he's been doing live since at least 2010 onwards.

3. The mood of the playing is very much like Slash does on 'Darker' songs - see 'Vengance is Mine' by Alice Cooper or 'The Unholy" on Slash's WOF album. Also consider how he plays on the Universal Monsters soundtrack he did for Halloween Horror Nights. Listen to those and it doesn't seem a stretch that he recorded these. Listen to Wicked Stone live circa 2014 and you can see he has the chops.

4. Other than doubting slash - there's not much to suggest it IS bucket - if it is bucket - where's his signature stuff? Why no tapping? Why No kill switch? Why no whammy pedal? Why none of his signature vibrato and tremmlo picking mix (like that beautiful passage in soothsayer etc) . Plus if it was bucket wouldn't the fast bit be even faster? wouldn't the scale run part be repeated more gilbert style like his nighttain solo? Its laid back for the likes of a bucket/bumble shred. Listen to TWAT or IRS and tell me it's the same guy. I dunno sounds closer to slash in style than those.

5. Likewise - what does Robin play that's similar to this style? There's a lick at the end of monsters that is similar to one of his runs on street of dreams i'll grant, but I'm not hearing much on general itself. All i hear are things that seem to be slash's general MO.

6. If it wasn't slash - why is his live version so accurate? It's not note perfect in the solo but then he doesn't cover himself that way normally either - but its got the general mood the same - unlike songs like TIL and TWAT where love or hate it he has replicated some phrases but tends to go his own way.

7. Not sure what you are saying about a super-strat? are you talking the pickup sound and tone? I don't hear notes at the 24th fret or whammy dives or anything non-gibsonish to me. But my ears could be missing something. Can you elaborate. But nevertheless as said by others - Slash has been known to mix it up in the studio of late.

For these reasons I think it seems logical to assume that the studio take that leaked is Slash - but maybe I will be proven wrong one day.

#46 Re: Guns N' Roses » The General and Monsters » 86 weeks ago

Putting it another way.

I thought the studio take had some Slash hallmarks, particularly newer Slash (myles eta) but it was plausible it could be the others happening to ape his style a little given bucket is somewhat of an all arounder.

Slash on the other hand doesn't really tend to ape other people's styles. Even when he plays a cover he plays it as himself not them and brings what he does to the song, rather than bringing the song to what he does kinda. Not saying its a bad thing his covers are great.

Here live slash was getting into it and playing in his natural style, and yet it sounded like it does on the record, thus seems its most likely the record was also him.

I don’t understand why playing the song live makes it more likely the leaked versions are Slash and Duff.

I believe it can be them, just not seeing why the odds are higher because they played it live…

Because what they played is too close to the studio take.

Like on TWAT and TIL slash plays some of the same phrases but you can hear his style differences from the studio version. On General live it just sounds so close.

I have noticed a few soundtrack albums don't seem to show up on spoitfy. So i assume its some type of rights/royalities collection issue.

But it sucks with OMG cos I liked it and want the convenience of it on my streamed playlist without messing around with files.

#49 Re: Guns N' Roses » If GNR goes on hiatus, NuGuns should reunite » 86 weeks ago

I think if anything happens for any anniversary of CD it's going to be Slash and Duff rerecording the CD songs they do live. And I doubt that will happen. OR live cuts of the CD songs released maybe.

Mind you I would take a studio version of TIL with Slash doing the solo and the 'scream vocals' that were used in the brain version leak. But I dont think i'm that lucky lol.

Interesting, I never noticed he said there were new lyrics as well as new guitars.

I personally think the classic lyrics are awesome.

Like there's something "so Axl" about them, the fire, the passion, the headfucky trip, and the analysis of it all. I always thought that lyrically it proved he "still had it" even if the production of the song and the guitar parts were not to everyone's taste.

I didn't care for the 'disco' version I must admit....but I'd love to see this song with slash guitars...more along the lines of Monsters or The Garden...like make it feel like one of Axl's dark mood pieces. It deserves some kind of reissue cos it kicks ass and I dont even think it's around on streaming these days is it?
