Yeah very positive, here's another one about the Gibson shows. I thought that the review was well-done.
Live Review: Guns N' Roses in Universal City, CA
December 19, 2006 03:45 PM
By Paul GarganoIf there are any questions regarding the return of Guns N' Roses [ tickets ], any cynics who still want to doubt frontman Axl Rose, or any suggestions that the current band is but a shell of the former lineup, they can all be laid to rest after Sunday night's (12/17) performance at the sold-out Gibson Amphitheater, in Universal City, CA.
Lay them to rest alongside grunge, rap-rock and emo, and in the vicinity of every other fad that has come and gone since Guns N' Roses last ruled the planet rock more than a decade ago. From top to bottom, the band's first of three nights in Los Angeles offered a two-hour-and-20-minute primer in rock-and-roll retribution, cementing the return of Axl Rose and showcasing a lineup poised to vault Guns N' Roses back atop the hard rock pantheon. From the moment Robin Finck's truncated guitar riffs shot through the amphitheater like shards of shrapnel introducing "Welcome to the Jungle," a standing room-only crowd of more than 5,000 hinged on every note. Notes that Rose nailed with increasing--and remarkable--proficiency as the late-night set progressed into early morning.
While the iconic frontman has never been known for his range, his performance Sunday demonstrated a vocal maturity that surpassed even the most optimistic of expectations, running the gamut from the seductive color of "Sweet Child 'O Mine," through the pissed-off vehemence of "Out ta Get Me." While he hasn't transformed into a crystal-esque crooner, there was barely a sour note throughout the 20-song set. Clearly, Rose has markedly increased his command over his voicesince the band's L.A.-area show in September (at the KROQ Inland Invasion, their first So-Cal appearance in more than a decade).
"You Could Be Mine" offered an early highlight, the normally sedate L.A. crowd ripping through every word like it was 1992 and Nirvana never existed. Rose offered ample reason to revel, as he cut through a repertoire of now-classic hits like he'd been rebuilt and recharged in his time out of the spotlight, with his comeback, until now, serving as little more than fine-tuning.
It seemed as if nothing would rival the mid-set, epic build of "November Rain," but the fine showings kept mounting, Rose whistling the intro to "Patience" before putting in one of his more memorable performances of the night, then ripping through set closer "Nightrain" as if he had crossed the Hollywood Hills and returned to the Sunset Strip circa the late-'80s. All but the final three songs on Guns' "Appetite for Destruction" debut were performed.
It can be presumed that the five previously-unreleased songs will be heard on the upcoming and long-awaited "Chinese Democracy," which Rose announced last week will be hitting stores March 6. The encore-opening title track was a turbo-charged adrenaline rush befitting of the heaviest "Use Your Illusion" moments, while the Asian-tinged intro to "Better" and the mid-tempo flow of "Madagascar" demonstrated an understanding that while the punk rock madness of the band's early appetites may have been tempered by time, the residual grit is still resounding.
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" proved a fitting segue into new ballad "The Blues," while "I.R.S." did the same leading into "My Michelle." Opener Sebastian Bach has become a tour fixture on the latter, but the manic, metallic onslaught of the duo sharing lead vocals was quickly overshadowed by the introduction of original GN'R guitarist Izzy Stradlin, who joined the band for "Think About You," "Patience," "I Used to Love Her" and "Nightrain," then returned for the encore-closing "Paradise City."
Of the current band--which features "Illusion"-era keyboardist Dizzy Reed, ex-Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarists Finck, Richard Fortus and Bumblefoot, drummer Frank Ferrer and keyboardist Chris Pitman--Finck, Fortus and Reed each received time in the solo spotlight.
Reed manned a center stage piano as he bled a solo run through The Rolling Stones' "Angie" into the new ballad, Finck did a commendable job of making people forget about founding member Slash with a blues-hued solo that led into "Sweet Child," and Fortus merged an arena-rock shredfest into a blues duet with Finck, and finally into "Out ta Get Me." As could be said of the entire band, each paid dutiful respect to the GN'R legacy without sacrificing their individual flair and unique personalities.
In an era where nostalgia would be just fine, Guns N' Roses circa 2006 deliver much more. Sebastian Bach, meanwhile, knows the power of nostalgia and played it to his advantage in an hour-long opening set that was heavy on Skid Row hits.
Opener "Slave to the Grind" was delivered in double-time, and followed by "Big Guns" and "Here I Am," proved more than capable in engaging the packed house. A handful of new tracks fit nicely with the more recognizable material; "Stuck Inside" and "American Metalhead" (think Judas Priest crashing head-on with Accept) embraced his band's heavy metal mindset, while new ballad "By Your Side" fit better alongside "I Remember You," which proved his strongest vocal showing.
Has it been mentioned that Guns N' Roses went onstage on time, to the minute? Don't bet on that becoming an everyday occurrence, but take this much to the bank: Judging from Los Angeles' response to "Chinese Democracy," another era of Guns N' Roses domination is imminent.
All hail, the triumphant return of Axl Rose.

It's probably not on HTGTH because I doubt even Beta likes Jarmo. Wasn't he somewhat responsible for the some of the leaks? Maybe he's in the doghouse a little?
Anyway, I suppose it's good news. Anyone get Classic Rock? If so please post scans asap!
#43 Re: Guns N' Roses » Eddie Trunk on Chinese Democracy » 909 weeks ago
If the CD was in the record company's hands, we'd get a leak. If we don't get one, it was never in their hands.
Frankly, I hope the record company does have it and the whole fucker is leaked and Axl has no more say in its release. Once it does leak, he'll have to let it go.
I don't understand your logic? I mean I would understand that if were in mass-production or something along those lines where non-essential personnel have accress. But I doubt Jimmy Iovine is exactly passing out copies to people while there is squabble over whatever there is squabble.

I don't think that anyone was really bashing the record company, but its pretty much a general consensus that they are the reason for the delay the last couple of months since the record has been done.
Granted a lot of the delay of not having this record can be placed on Axl's shoulders, but the fact remains he doesn't owe anyone anything. Was the carrot dangled in front of us? Yes. Does life go on? Yes.
As much as I would have had liked to have the album now or years ago, it's Axl's life dude. Once art is released that's when it becomes 'someone elses'. He can do whatever he wants and whether we think that's fair or not it's not our business.
Blaming anyone isn't going to help the situation. Go live your life.

Yeah everything Bumble said was a joke. Recording is done. Anyway, I'm making T-Shirts, who wants one?
The first one is Geffen taking a piss on the fans, the second one says 'pissing all over the fans since 2007' and the last two say 'Chinese Democracy.....Starts When We Get Our Money'. Personally I believe this rumor. Maybe not her post, but the rumor.
#46 Re: Guns N' Roses » Axl was recently in New York for two months? » 909 weeks ago
He recorded stuff with Baz @ Electric Lady in NYC I thought?

Yeah, see that's what I like. Good clean, honest opinion. Sure maybe someone has something I don't necessarily agree with or whatever but as long as they aren't pulling punches then I'm fine with it.
I dig M.I.A. too, probably not as much as you though.
I finally got to hear a little bit of her new album @ a friend's the other night. Once I get some coin I'm going to probably pick it up. How does it compare with Arular?

The reward might be Chinese Democracy....
Karma for you.
#49 Re: Guns N' Roses » 2006 Tour Retrospective - Resurrected » 909 weeks ago
I was saying that I have a good idea of what they'll develop into. Yeah I've heard the UYI/AFD/Lies Demos and those are raw and very interesting to listen to. But those can be much more finished than today's music with the convenience of the digital age.
And about the songs, I wouldn't classify those as close to final tracks. I can't speak for Better or The Blues, but the other tracks seem to be from 2002. You can atleast confirm Chinese and Madagascar as from the 02 Era. See the Boston Promo video for reference.
And no, I don't want to punch people because they have an opinion. I'm just tired of going into forums and seeing people be either burning hot or scathing cold. If you don't lick nuts over at HTGTH, you are an anti-new GNR hater and some other places people rip on Axl or the new lineup for whatever reason. That's what pisses me off.
Don't believe that the album will be a success? Fine, but quit holding onto the past. The old lineup is gone and the way things are looking, gone for good. Really like the new band? Fine, but don't paint Axl as a martyr who never did anything wrong and nothing is his fault. For example: people are talking about Better and how it supposedly sounds like 'different songs put together'. Okay, do you think November Rain is two songs mashed together when it transitions from the piano to 'don't you think...' and Slash's guitar solo. What about Dead Horse where it goes acoustic at the end? If you say that about the new stuff there's certainly many examples of the old stuff where that happens too.
I just think it's foolish to judge these songs before anyone hears the final product. For example I.R.S. on the demo is much more poppy and soft-toned and high-pitched. When it was played live in 2006 it was much harsher, had a funky, sonic-whallop undertone and Axl grinding over the top. What if 'Better' was made into a soft-acoustic song and half-way through kicked into electric? I'm not saying it will, but there are a lot of options. We know Axl is a whore for layers, so maybe he adds some really interesting stuff?
I do agree that the 'There Was A Time' intro sounds too cluttered, but it's unfair to say that the whole album will be cluttered and top-heavy because of a demo track. That's my point.
There's a difference between having an opinion and fact, being honest and being critical. I'm not saying people can't have opinions. As one of my favorite lines says, "There's a difference between being frank... and being dick."

I think it's a good summary and good speculation for the most part.
The recording in January was most likely recording Baz on 'Sorry' and maybe Axl re-recording his vocals to play off Baz's. Who knows. And regardless of 'Better's' great hook, I'm not too certain on it being the lead single. In it's demo form it was a nice poppy song to get some people like "who is that...sounds interesting...", but lead single? Why? Because it was the first "new leak" and some hipster blog said so? Remember someone told chubby Madison in 2002 what the lead single was going to be, but of course she didn't fess up to who or what song.
I do agree that 2006 would have been a great time to release the album, but I think it's erroneous to think that the momentum cannot be regained. Lets see, biggest band in the world to 7 years of silence, replace every member but Dizzy, there's momentum....aborted tour in 2001, momentum again... aborted tour in 2002, amazing momentum...and a great tour in 2006. Granted 2006 had the most momentum and the most active GNR year since 1993, but hey, who am I to doubt Axl. He's proved me wrong enough times already.
They just need to get the album out and play some shows. Snap, crackle, pop, Axl's back in the saddle again-nuhhhh.
Oh and people dissing the new songs, did you notice that they are demos? Demos as in "not finished"? You make me want to punch you in the mouth. I like the songs and I'm still going to like the songs when they are finished. I dig the lyrics and I have a good idea of what they're going to develop into. Fact remains though, they aren't done yet. If you don't like them when the album comes out, that's fine, but atleast you won't be making an erroneous judgment.
And Buzzsaw, sorry dude, but you should probably take a breather. By your logic, most of the songs on the Illusion albums aren't good because they're 8-minutes. Breakdown, November Rain, Estranged, Coma, etc. Afterall, those songs are bad because they're too long. Right?
What about Led Zeppelin's 'Achilles Last Stand' or 'Stairway to Heaven' or 'Kashmir'? Those are 8+ minutes?
GNR has always been over-indulgent, but does that mean the songs are bad or no one wants them? Nope.
Some of you need to take a break. Rather than getting all pissy at Axl or whoever why don't you just listen to the music when it comes out and take it for what it is? I'm sure that you'll like it more and be more happy than getting wrapped up in politics that we, for whatever reason don't have the best vantage point on.
What we do know is that the album is finally done and having some birthing pains getting out of the womb. Hopefully the bitch will finally pop out and then we can be over the misery of all the hormonal bullshit of the last 10 or so years.
I hope that you'll look for any truth in what I say and forgive any directness, I mean the best. Regardless of what you think about new or old lineup, I thing Axl is one of the greatest song writers and lyricists ever and even though I have my reservations about certain things, he's not some talentless hack walking in off the street making this CD. That's why I think the CD will be great. Because your biggest critic is yourself and he's been fighting that one in the ring for 15 years. And if he's confident about putting something out, I'm inclined to think that it will be great. Whether it sells 10 copies or 10 million.
"In the end, it's just an album, but it's one that I, the band, our record company and all involved believe and feel is a true Guns N' Roses album. "
