#491 Re: Guns N' Roses » GNR, Rock Band, the VMAs and 4 albums » 883 weeks ago
Everything's always a big fuckin' question mark with GNR. Why? Because they don't communicate with their fanbase actively. There's no official message board where rumors could be addressed amongst the fans - it's not difficult to set one up. No need to make a big brouhaha over a reality show or a lost bike. Just one person regularly answering the fans' questions. They could say 'no comment atm on the album' and everybody could live with that. But they could come half-way through as far as rumor control goes - their stance is still rooted to the era where rumormongers were confined within snail-mail clubs and fanzines. Sorry Axl, that shit just don't cut the mustard in the 21st century.
Their relationship to the fanbase goes on to show how painfully disorganized the camp has been in the past. While I'm certain Azoff and co will eventually push through some major changes in the PR side of the band (a necessity if the album comes out), so far this saga has been a very complicated mess as all effort has been put into keeping Axl in a good mental state and painstakingly pushing forth with CD. Hell, even the 3DRealms people converse with their fans (and have done so since Day 1), despite the fact that the release of Duke Nukem Forever is still up in the air.
But we have rely on some Mysteron or whomever to grace us with updates (as that's obscure enough to go unnoticed for most investigative journalists), which is hardly a healthy situation with a band as prominent as GNR. But I guess there's no point in doing at least one photo shoot with the band before Axl can figure out which lineup will be representing CD upon its release.
Not to mention the world would learn Slash ain't in the band anymore.

Catcher in the Rye would make a nice album title, with all the Salinger allusions that come with it. Not to mention it's strong enough to be a title track. This guy's likely full of it, but unless Axl wants to call three different studio albums the CD trilogy and will actually name one of them after CITR, you read it here first.

Keep your cool, dude.
The first and foremost reason Ron is currently viewed in a slightly condescending manner next to Bucket is that Ron's not on the leaks as prominently as Bucket (if at all), Ron's not the one who wrote Shackler's Revenge (whether he performs on it is right now a moot point), and Ron's not the one who single-handedly turned the CD sessions around back in '00 and had Axl dive in and make a guitar album worthy of (if not similar to) Slash.
Bucket made a huge contribution to the CD saga. He left. We were left pissed.
Ron came in, is a talented bloke and seemingly an out n' out nice guy, but face it, he's still to earn his spurs as anything other than a live musician, a necessary attempt to fill the void Bucket left into the touring band. Before you go and say that he's recorded material for CD, I say fair enough, but the jury's still out on his contributions.
Come to think of it, Ron's situation actually reminds me of Fortus. And what about Paul Huge, the man without whom 'there would be no Guns N Roses'? Never gives interviews (check), recorded an insane amount of guitar parts (check), was replaced by a more approachable musician (check). Already he sounds like a soul mate to Bucket.

Its good to see some of the more sensible, normal folk from there, and elsewhere come over here for objective discussions and the ability to read about what actually happens in GNR land than be blinkered or given crap filtered information. They couldnt even mention the new leaks over there.
A good chunk of the people here are HTGTH alumni, which should you tell something.

I find it laugable that Axl would o.k. Jungle for this piece of shit and not let them use it in Black Hawk Down. Maybe he's woke up to the fact that promotion is a good thing.
As far as I know, Axl's not the one behind it. The back catalogue licensing rights are currently split three ways with Slash, Duff and Universal Music Group. Axl sold his share to Sanctuary Publishing in early '05, and Sanctuary was later acquired by UMG.

Such a thing exists, apparently. Add it to the pile which already consists of Perfect Crime (the tour-spanning documentary) and all the shows that were shot by the GNR video crew.
RAW: It's weird, on the face of it, I would have thought a tour as long as the GN'R have just finished would have been enough to drive anyone over the edge, but actually the band all seemed to slow down on the excesses and find other ways to occupy themselves - at least according to the sneak preview I've had of the tour diary.
Duff: 'You've seen that? I wish I had.'
RAW: Yeah, I can for instance, tell you what you were doing on 16 June 1992.
Duff:'What was I doing?'
RAW: You were having a row with a fan at Gateshead until Axl Rose stepped in and advised him, '˜I wouldn't mess with Duff he hasn't had a drink in two weeks! Duff laughs long and hard.
Duff:'I do remember that!'
RAW:What was that row about?
Duff:'It was just some asshole that kept throwing stuff at me. I get that a lot '˜cos like you were saying, people picture me as the Punk of the band so they figure it's cool to throw shit at me or spit at me or whatever! But no, no, I don't like it! But this guy kept throwing shit and I was about to jump in. it's such a wimpy thing to do '˜cos I'm a tall guy and an easy target.'
[...]
RAW: I can also reveal that on 10 June 1993 you went to an Oslo dentist to have a tooth removed! Do you remember that?
Duff:'Yeah, I still have it! It's a big ugly fuckin' big-ass three fuckin' rooted tooth! It doesn't look human, man, It's like this THING but it came out of my mouth and now I have this huge gap. They coulda saved it, but I didn't have the time to undergo six weeks of root canal shit and it hurt so bad I just said, '˜Please, please get it out!!! And it was so big and ugly I had to keep it!' - RAW Magazine, Sept. 1993

Just figured I'd put up all the latest confirmed meetings between Axl and the rest of the old lineup(s). Might be of some interest.
Izzy: Last seen with Axl on 12/20/06 at the Gibson Amphitheatre, Universal City. Has rang his doorbell more than once over the years and has been let in on occasion.
Steven: Last seen with Axl on 09/17/06 after the show at The Joint, Las Vegas. Has been hoping for a reunion move actively than most board members.
Matt: Last seen with Axl on 04/12/06 in two separate parties in New York. Changes his opinion on Axl more often than his own socks.
Gilby: Last seen with Axl on 06/22/00 at the Cat Club, LA. They duetted on Dead Flowers, which rather fittingly describes Gilby relationship to GNR.
Duff: Last met Axl in late 1998, the year following his resignation from the band.
When was that you had contact with Axl last time?
A year ago. - Duff, Burrn Magazine, 12/99
First time I saw him, everything seemed to work out fine, but it looks like things have changed. [...] I think Axl is really pissed at me now. I think he's getting more and more pissed. Duff, 2000
Slash: Officially, is still to meet Axl since his resignation in October '96. Met with his maid in October '05.

Thought I'd share.
We were taking a break at a film shoot, and one of the camera guys was wearing a Slash t-shirt, which I hadn't even noticed. This led to an impromptu discussion on Slash himself. The soundman recollected he was in Roskilde '95, the last day of the festival. Around noon, he hovered around the area and heard some racket on the main stage. He approached the stage and found around 10 people there, moshing to Slash's Snakepit! He reckoned they got "the shittiest slot on the whole festival". He got in less than 10 feet from Slash without even trying, though, which he considered a rare commodity.
Second time he met with Slash was when VR played back here in 2004. He thought the band was tighter now than the Snakepit act, but even so, Slash amused the concert-goers by yelling to the engineers between every other track: "More geetar!"
Not exactly spectacular stories, but it was amusing to notice that the people involved were seemingly quite knowledgeable about Snakepit, which was never exactly even a VR-level band in terms of recognizability.

So it's fall, late fall.
Now where have I heard that before?
But yeah, they'll be pushing for a pre-Xmas release. There's no point in putting out a single through one of the most anticipated video game releases of the season without capitalizing on it. In 2006, the proposed single had a tentative date penciled for Labor Day (Sept 4th), with a release likely desired for November. Rock Band 2 fits the same bill, so better dust off those November hats. Pre-Thanksgiving release if it all works out.
