yup. Bumble almost joined during that era, but still Axl expected Bucket to return until the very latest point in 2006 when the tour was booked and starting, then Bumble was invited again (much to some discomfort of the rest of the band who didn't want him in the band at all). crazy shit, considering it's 2017 now, ChiDem is forgotten and nobody except nerds like us cares about it, and nearly all the guys who were in the band during that time are long gone.

not sure how this fits in the general picture, or if it fits at all.
what the hell was Axl doing during the time BH left? I (a bit) feel that the only thing he did was narrating a DJ in GTA San Andreas and it's kind of forgotten episode of the ChiDem era, because even Chinese Whispers doesn't mention this escapade (or I'm stupid, which is possible).
I mean, how the hell did this thing even happen, then went on and got totally forgotten again?
lol, Axl as some random guy who gives his voice to a virtual DJ in a videogame.
and now, he gave his voice to a nostalgia band.
funny, eh?

heh, @Ragnar you are so damn right. he's making so many good jokes! too bad nobody really gets them during the last 10 years or so...

hmm speaking of Mickey, I think it's the second reason why we're in shit. 1) Axl's unability to get anything done (unless someone else is 100% in charge, like Angus in Axl/DC), and 2) Axl's voice has gone in the poo-poo during the last 10 years. remember those mighty live shows during 2006-7 tour? well, they're history, altough there were some flashes of rasp in the 2009-10 legs, for example TWAT from Tokyo 2009 or Estranged don't-remember-what-show-that-was.
anyway - for me, there are two reasons why I don't give a damn about this era of the band - 1) I want new material, not a nostalgia sellout act, 2) I can't stand the voice, which is extremely bad during all the bootlegs I listened to (the rest of the band is perfect, and it has always been perfect since 2006, no matter who was in the band at the moment). the vocals just hurt me A LOT, it's like a day and night compared to pre-2009 bootlegs, yeah, probably also including 2001-2 era, which was... kind of special... but helium >>> Mickey anyway wink

Once the 2002 implosion happened, he should've walked away from Chinese. It was quickly becoming an albatross. Its saga defined the second half of his career.  Its not worthy of such distinction. While it may come across like a bad dream now....it shouldn't be the swan song of his discography.

If Axl wanted his career and the "Chinese Democracy" project to survive, he should've decoupled it from the Guns N' Roses brand.

The problem is he like all the greats are filled with objectively delusional self-belief and cut-throat ambition. It's how they can get to such great heights in the first place and what allows them to survive and overcome grueling stretches of touring and mental and physical anguish. Axl also lacks any sort of formal training in professional matters and even consistently told the professionals to go fuck themselves.

So going along with your premise, if he walks away from his two album opus, a near miraculous event, where does he walk to? Back to a label that had already lost interest, to his arthouse band comporting to be one of the biggest bands in history, or to the public with record lows of popularity?

The only thing he could walk back to is right where he came from.

In the end, it was doomed from the start.

true. and I don't really think that 2002 was like "the peak" of ChiDem era and subsequent years were "mocking it" or something, no. there just were multiple iterations of ChiDem, we can call it "eras" - the origins like 1998-2000, we can safely call this 2000 Intentions Era. then Bucket era, then 2006-2008 era, then 2009-2014 era.
as for the rest, yeah Zilla, exactly as you said. too complicated and ambitious, too much mental tensions and disrespect to other people, and it was al doomed from the start.

nor Bucket stuff, unfortunately. no matter what anyone else does, people are there just to see the Big 3. and what's sad, people would pay insane amounts of money, just to see them poop onstage or whatever else, and they don't really care about setlists, solos etc. just those "old" guys playing the old hits. which is kinda sad.

I loved Fortus' james bond spot....was the best of all the solo spots to me (well ok slash is always better...)...but I preferred it over Matt/Duff/Robin/Bucket/Bumble /DJ spots in the set....even though I'm a bumble fan.

in my opinion, all 3 guitarists had enjoyable solo spots during the Ashba era, I actually really liked each of them. and that was a huge difference compared to the old times, where I hated those half-hour drum solos followed by another half-hour drum/guitar solos. I purely hated that part of UYI setlists. during Bucket era, yeah, it got a bit better, altough Bucket's solos were rather stunts than solos, Robin's solos were trash and Paul/Fortus had no solos. during 2006/7 era... let me try remembering what solos were they even playing... ehh... nope, I can't remember. only those blues jams snippets maybe, and the special Bumble solos before Christmas 2006 (loved Mr. Grinch!). as much as I adore the 2006 era, the solo spots are completely forgetable for me. and as much as I dislike the Ashba era, I really really loved the solos, how ironical.
during the current era, they took the good from the previous era and keep it, which is good for me, also Wish You Were Here is a special thing for me.

Fortus was making great solo spots during the Ashba era - remember the James Bond Theme?

I feel like Axl is kinda venturing off into that ecclectic, Liberace/Elvis post-fame mode.

he's pretty much doing it since Robin left the band... the so-called Ashba era was just endless touring without even a hint of any progression.

yayyy, that's even better. first I wanted to caption like "and then in 2002 I told them / By that time, I should be done with the third album." classic!
