Wow, everyone's on the ledge on this stuff. You should just jump now because this is what we're getting. Not sure why'd you want to stick this out after hearing 10 cd songs. There's no reunion coming either. The best you're getting is Slash's attempt to be Carlos Santana. Another original idea there. Like I've been saying, I like the new ideas here. I'm past the gnr of old. I don't want the same ol, same ol. I want something that challenges everyone involved, including us.
Very good, sir.
Personally, I'm fed up with Appetite. There are some catchy songs in there, yes, but it's an album of its time like many others. Listening to songs like If the World makes me realize how frustrating it must be for the band to be considered a nostalgia act and all the while there has been new music like this in the making. Certainly explains a lot about some of the comments made by the band members in the past years. If the public perception of GNR today is determined by AFD, an assumption which Axl backs with his traveling retrospective, the new tracks are certainly something completely different.
It's a no-win situation, though. GNR can't be conceived at large to exist in their own private bubble outside the studio setting and CD is bound to be compared to its contemporaries along with the AFD legacy. When you think about it, that's only common sense as the music world keeps shifting and evolving. Maybe for a split second in the early 90's, GNR were the top of the heap, but they no longer incite fear (so to speak) amongst their peers - many of which have been replaced since the hey-day by other acts.
Of course, Axl brought a lot of that upon himself. While it would be biased and unjust to blame him for all the things that happened within the band eversince Farm Aid, he took it all for too long. Had he released the Sean Beavan album in '99, it would've probably gotten a mixed reception, but many people would've still embraced it and he could've gotten away with balancing the live performance with the golden oldies. In '02, he could've made a return to form by putting out a classic rock album with Buckethead in the fold. '06 could've by then marked a tent-pole release of a band which the public would expect to be ready to abandon all excess baggage of the past and embrace completely new soundscapes.
But none of that happened, which is why If the World sounds so daft to so many.

I was shocked to see Jeff Conaway on there. I had no idea he had any addiction problems.
Last I saw Jeff Conaway (this was the Babylon 5-era), he was a born-again Christian and seemed to lead a reasonably healthy lifestyle. Alas, nothing like an austere lifestyle to provoke temptation.
The fuck's Rodney King doing there anyway? He's a repetitive offender who should be incarcerated rather than put on TV. Then again, that applies to many people more famous than him as well.
Gary Busey's the only one has a certain level of class no matter how long he sinks.

GNR is more like Dream Theatre now, which were heavily influenced by Rush. So is GNR a modern day Rush?
I fell on my ass laughing that because it reminded me of this:
"Merck also told me the news that the Guns 'n Roses cd is done and it rocks (not his exact words)... Well, he did say it has four rockers like Appetite For Destruction - the rest of the tracks are "challenging and epic", Meaning they're boring or Axl thinks he's joined Rush...
It was a long time for everyone
But I guess I'm about to see for myself

Even the '99 OMG has a disco beat in it.
It's always been like that, pick up a general direction to where you're heading (industrial, classic rock...) and blend everything you want into it.

James means the re-recorded rhythm guitar tracks, which Ron said were lacking.
"Are you gonna be included on all tracks?
Not on all, but on a good chunk of them, definetely. I played a lot of rhythm parts to the stuff - To me, it felt like a lot of the rhythm tracks seemed a little mechanical and just didn't have that kinda sleazy thing that GNR always had... Also, I was pretty much given a hundred guitar solos for each song to find the thing that's gonna work best - we made sure that every possibility was there.
How many tracks have you been working on?
I don't know... we've done so many songs and not all of them will be on the album. I don't wanna know too much about the album - I want to be surprised myself. Like even the final mixes - I haven't heard them yet!" - Maximum Threshold, 04/13/07

2. The biggest movie ever is Titanic and it's 3 hours, 15 minutes long.
Godfather, pt. 2. 200 minutes.
Then there are movies even longer, like Bertolucci's Novecento, which is screened with an intermission due to the epic 315 minute running time.
And most importantly, Chris Nolan is one of the world's best movie editors as well as a great director.
He knows how to kill his darlings, but I wouldn't call him an editor - let alone a great one. Film editing is a work of its own and requires craftsmanship few directors possess.
Having said that, The Dark Knight will probably be the industry event of the year. Funny that, I always feared my interest in Batman would wane in my later years, as I was confident they'd eventually get the Joker story right.

julia (babydolls) wrote:Anyone else think that Axl's vocals sound very Bowie in the first phrases of this song? Unmistakenly Axl, but still very Bowie-esque. Beautiful outro...
Hey sic, madagas, etc. which song was described years ago as being a cross between Bowie and something else?
Atlas Shrugged.
Jeff Leeds has spoken to Splat about some 'new' tracks he encountered during his recent investigations for his GN'R article in the NY Times .
The first track, 'Atlas Shrugged' is described as being somewhere between 70's glam rock and 'November Rain'. Another new track, 'Quick Song', is a rock song with a riff similar to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit. The last track, 'Zodiac', is described as an electronic, industrial song.
It is likely that these tracks are older GN'R tracks, so it is unclear whether these tracks will have been A-listed for the forthcoming Guns n'roses, 'Chinese Democracy'. -HTGTH

As alexh0618 pointed out, the piano melody is something Axl has played as an intro to November Rain. The first time he did that was in House of Blues 01/01/01. Since this is likely an Axl composition, the piano tune has been around a long time. So it's an old song, at least from 2000.
It's not This I Love, nor is it likely Prostitute. Here's how orchestrator Paul Buckmaster described the latter one:
[It's a] mid-up, kind of biting 4 minute song with an aggressive rhythm section. The way I wrote for the string section (32-piece, consisting of ten 1st Violins, eight 2nd Violins, six violas, and eight cellos) gave the song another dimension. [The song is] powerful, like fire and ice. - GNRSource
It could be one of the songs Marco Beltrami made orchestrations in 2002, which included The General, Seven, Leave Me Alone and Thyme.
Or it could be Oklahoma, which ironically was mentioned in the original 01/01/01 setlist.

Not This I Love methinks.
Cool song, though.
