Ron is a nice guy, I liked his playing on classic and chinese material, and you have to appreciate his decent fan-friendly approach.
But his original work is not inspiring, nor is DJ's in my view, but the latter had more verve and overall appeal than the former.
I'm happy both have since departed.
Considering there was never any concrete news of Axl & DJ ever writing together, I'm not convinced he believed it was a good idea.
Three alternate versions of Better likely didn't materialize out of thin air or without provocation.

I've never listened to it.
I bought it on sale when Best Buy started liquidating inventory and I hate the final mix.

Im not sure he heard DJ remixes of CD and thought they were good.
The idea itself is fucking looney toons.
You have a vault full of different approaches by superior guitarists. Put those out.
If he wanted production experience, they could've you know, written new material.
the only explanation i could ever give for dj ashba is that the label caved and finally gave axl the greenlight for a new album, but only if he hired someone who could just fully commit himself to pretending to be slash.
Axl preferred DJ over Bumble as a songwriting partner, that was clear as day.
The only explanation in my book is cutting the old guys off of royalties and circumventing legal red tape.
there's no way you can ever convince me that dj was brought in to write songs for an album. i refuse to believe that.
I disagree.
I don't like DJ Ashba as a person but he is a marketable guy with a proven track record and his own fanbase.
Bumble? Not so much.

I still can't believe Axl thought re-releasing DJ Ashba version of CD was ever a good idea.

I've literally never played GTAO and only played online on GTA IV a handful of times due to bizarro internet issues.
I know that's the cat's meow at the moment and I fully admit the DLC like Cunning Stunts and Transform Races look pretty cool.

Robin's little guitar fills were awesome. No reason to lose them.
And Tommy's bass was fucking killer on those leaks, now it's buried under loads of guitar.
The whole saga defies logic but even if they had re-recorded the whole thing in one go in 2006, it would've sounded pretty killer.
Tommy's bass was more prominent in the live mixes as things went on, one reason the Rock Am Ring version of IRS is quite good. It's just a series of missed opportunities that make you want to pull your hair out. And not even because of hindsight bias, all of us grandpas saw that horror show unfolding on the spot.
I just don't understand Axl's thought process on the final mix. He could've sold me a ketchup popsicle in the middle of summer up until that point.
And as much as I love Buckethead, can you imagine Prostitute 1999? It makes me hyperventilate. I bet that sounds like the edge of a serial killer's hot knife.

The feedback of the guitar simulates the effect and then they ring slightly in the background.
It's so much stronger than the final version, we hear the ambience, we hear Tommy's bass, and a classic guns dueling guitar setup.
Why did it have to be so hard.

GTA V on PS4 is the same game with a graphical / performance bump and FPV. Your judgment there.
I'm going to pick it up when I get a PS4 because I'm as hardcore about GTA as I am GNR although that too is fading.
I haven't played Arkham Knight either. The reviews turned my off but I loved AA, AC, and to a lesser extent AO.

I was listening to the leaks again the other day and it made me want the 1999 and 2001 versions even more.
The former are rough, textural, and so interesting. It feels like a guerrilla underground operation at times, notably with that beautiful attack warning siren on IRS.
The latter has many weird ambient flourishes between the increased effects on Better, the reverb outro on Riad, and the extended intro on If The World.
In short, both have so much more character than the final thing. I really hope it's re-released some day and some more work is put into it. Brian Wilson's Smile this beast, kick out a box set, and let us all enjoy the history.
It's the kind of thing where I think fans could probably do it more justice than Axl and crew could ala the Star Wars Despecialized Edition that got rid of the unnecessary bullshit.
