#541 Re: Guns N' Roses » When will we hear more vault material? » 298 weeks ago
I'd say it's more like this:
Yes, probably accurate.
Beta said the album was done Christmas 2007 and negotiations were on-going throughout 2008 IIRC.
But there’s a marked split between 2006 “finished” songs and the 2007 “finished” songs so I went with the simplification “2008” because it’s easier to remember and still approximately correct.
Anyway, I think these two versions probably have the highest likelihood of leaking due to the trading of hands.
We can only cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Place your bets.
Think of all that remains:
- 1995-1997 old Guns sessions
- 1997-1998 Youth / shadow band sessions
- 1998-1999 Rumbo Sean Beavan sessions
- 2001 Village sessions (additional discs not included in Zutaut locker)
- 2002 RTB Village sessions
- 2004 mystery sessions
- 2006 Andy Wallace double album sessions
- 2008 Axl Caram double album sessions
- 2010 CD2 release candidate sessions
- 2014 Axl/Pitman sessions
- Misc. sessions (Oh My God, This I Love)
There’s likely a mountain of discs still out in the wild.

I’ll be happy to listen to reworked CD era songs by the current line. The more appealing prospect is older versions leaking around the same time.
But for all the pretense of Axl’s Tegridy, Guns N’ Roses is a traveling bank at this point who will be releasing an album comprising of material written by 10+ writers from 20+ years ago.
No different from say... Beyoncé.

It took approximately 2 months and 8 days for the entire lot to leak. #Lockergate2019
That’s 2 months and 7 days too long for my liking but I’m glad that it’s finally all out.

P.P.S.
After listening to "Shankler's" a couple more times (still hold that this was a typo) I'm convinced that Buckethead was inspired by slasher movies, serial killers, and Hitchcock movies when he wrote this track.
The guitar stings are reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann's work on Psycho and bring to mind a stabbing motion. The solo which has the unfortunate metaphor of consisting of "elephant noises" seems to be screams from the unfortunate victim. That is, the song is musically structured like a killing spree before the Shackler gets his titular revenge.
I really like Axl's overdubs on the final album version. Very demonic and expressive.
I wonder if there's a 2002-2006 version of this before Bumblefoot go to it.

It seems to fit the bill.
I can’t imagine a song about Cuban cigars being anything but a nice, down to earth jam song not unlike “Going Down” or even “Box” by Izzy.
So take “Nothing” from RMCD#4, add some acoustic and flamenco guitars, jazz brushing the cymbals, a dash of new Axl lyrics, and you get a “Ben”-esque track that is secretly about suckin’ on a Cuban.
Any thoughts or informed commentary?

P.S. Fuck Bob Ezrin.
If I go off the songs with vocals he has a killer record which maybe lacks a “wow me “ lead single but is on the whole sufficiently poppy.
It gets your boat out on the water which would have only picked up steam from there...

I need another spin tomorrow but these versions are like 95% there for me.
I like the additional lyric in “If The World” but miss the drum and guitar stings, the la la la interlude, and extended synth intro. The album version bridge slows it down and gives it more of a thematic arc. Mostly better here but missing some of those good decisions.
“Sorry” is by and large superior in every way. Missing that Bucket outro solo and the bridge solo is a little more raw and sloppy but everything else is incredible. The heavier synth gives levity to it but retains that groovy gloomy flavor. The pounding riff just knocks you over the head. It’s so Motörhead we’re playing at 10 and fuck you tock n roll.
“Shankler’s” is another hatchet job by re-recording and Caram and Axl poor decision making. The riff is way heavier the stab riff has a serial killer Halloween vibe instead of obnoxious riffing feel of the finished album. The bass and reworked sections on album give it a more funky danceable vibe. That’s actually a theme of further re-recording. Axl tries to stick a hook on the “TWAT” prechorus (thinking about it makes me physically sick) but the better example are Bumblefoot’s “Oh My God” and “Silkworms”. More funk and disco in search for of hooks.
I still don’t care for PRL. Crystal Method rip-off. Real Doll sounds dated but I dig the riff and is better than PRL.
I want to hear Cuban Skies out of morbid curiosity. And older This I Love.
Come to daddy.

If GNR were cool, they would've had Rick do the McBob intro at the gig.
