I think I bumped into that Tommy interview you mentioned just a while ago. A pretty kicking account in all its honesty.

Tommy wrote:

It was a bummer. Most of the songs that are on the record now were done 10 fucking years ago. But all the talking heads in the mix were saying, “Make ’em sound better! Make ’em sound better!” So we kept redoing this and that. And it ended up coming back down to the same fucking songs that they were 10 years ago, except that now they were a super-dense mishmash of a bunch of instrumentation.

I remember Tommy saying earlier on that most of the songs were written before/during the Beavan era. But, at the time, Josh Freese and Beavan said there were around 40 songs being tinkered on, with Axl saying 70 songs in total... Tommy doesn't contradict that, nor the additional stuff written with Bucket & Brain.

What Tommy does suggest is that Guns stopped writing new songs in around 2000/2001, and merely screwed around re-recording the existing material for 7-8 years. 18

And that is why the leaked versions were way better than the album cut. Because they are not just cut and pasted with redone parts over the 2002 songs.

I would love to hear the 2002 version of the album before all the tinkering was done.  Just look at songs from 2002 like Chinese democracy, madagascar, and the blues. Those versions live are way better live than the current live and album versions.    The blues went from being a great track to a shit track because they ruined it.  CD the song is also a mess because of all the extra layers they added.

Nothing IMO can still touch the amazing HOB version of Chinese Democracy, that version was amazing.

Wasn't his art to leak. If Axl never wanted to release it.. that would be his right.

Its one thing to say it wasn't his art to leak. But its another to say leaking it hurt the album when it helped it.

The problem with the album is it was not promoted and the final mixes were not very good. That is why the album failed. If the album was good, then it would have been a bigger hit.
The leaks had nothing to do with the album flopping.

If it wasn't for Skewl then BB may never have giving $15m of the exclusive rights to the album. If that never happened and lets say Axl released the album a year later instead to all stores, then the album never would have gotten their money back.

BB by paying them $15m for the rights basically let he label break even so to speak.

Not to long ago at BB i saw CD selling for like 4.99.

They still haven't sold all their copies on it

Skwerl has that Martyr complex and doesn't have a grasp on reality and exactly what kind of damage he caused this record. I think he deserved whatever punishment and then some. I don't like when people try to profit off of someone else's art or legend/mystique.

You have to be kidding me. If it wasn't for him, we would probably still be waiting for CD.  What damage exactly did he cause?  Because the leaks he had were way better than the album version of the songs.

If anything the leaks helped the album.  When ever we got leaks from any source MSL or Skewl the internet always blew up and I don't just mean the Gnr forums.

Random events and contracts resulted in the release of CD. UYI was a forced release as well

No future release will happen unless events dictate it. Will disquiet among the band members be enough, I do not know, but I heavily doubt it

Unless anyone knows otherwise, there is no noise just now showing Axl is doing anything himself towards a new album. Band members, yes. Axl, no.

It will be another year of touring, that is where the money is

I agree with this, in 2013 the rumor was, oh guns will release an album in 2014 and tour for that.  The tour came  up and people were thinking oh this will be for the album.

Now we hear new rumors that the album won't be release now until mid 2015.

And even if they release the CD left overs, do we really want to hear it with Ron, Frank and DJ replacing BH, Brain and Robins parts?  We already heard how terrible DJs better was.  And Rons stuff on CD IMO always was crap. BHs versions were always better (at least the stuff we can compare).

The band should just, release the CD sessions with BH, Brain and Robin this year, then for the whole year write a new album with the current band. Then release it next year.

Until this band writes their own songs from scratch, its just a cover band of the AFD era band and the BH era band.

The Feds came out pretty daft, considering they nearly incriminated Billy Howerdel for leaking discs burned in 2006. He'd been away from the project for around... six years.

Skewrl wrote:

We started with a list of people that had a copy of the record, according to the FBI’s information. It was very short. Three names: Andy Wallace, whose relationship with GNR was apparently strained for a time due to money owed to him; Merck Mercuriadis, Axl’s former manager, who had played the songs for Interscope in 2006; and, impossibly, Mister Saint Laurent, who had claimed to have gotten a copy from “some guy in Portugal.” One of these things is not at all like the others, and as I said, MSL’s claims were discredited and removed from this list... At some point in 2008, I’m not sure when, we found an email from Laurie Soriano to Jensen Penalosa, telling him that it had come to her attention that Jimmy Iovine “does in fact have a copy” of the tracks, and that his name should be added to the list of possible sources.

It's nice to get confirmation that them leaks were in fact Wallace's mixes, the ones Rolling Stone bragged about when there were x Tuesdays left in 2006.

The Iovine connection does tickle the funny-bone, when one takes into account how Guns were walking on eggshells when commenting on the leaks as they happened. Axl showed unusual restraint, just having the usual "leaks are devastating to the band", while the official line was something along the lines of "we don't really care about the AntiQuiet guys, our concern is the original source". If Iovine was the guy, those remarks were squarely aimed at him - and given Laurie Soriano is Axl's lawyer, Guns had their sights set on Jimmy as the culprit for a good while. Move on to 2009, Axl gives out interviews voicing his disenchantment with the label, while Tommy ups the ante by telling the world it was Iovine who sunk the album.

Looking back, both Axl and Tommy pretty much shovel the dirt at Iovine's feet by blaming him on everything aside leaking the album, and they do it because, well, Iovine may have leaked the album, but they can't say it outright.

I can see why they didn't care about Skwel and wanted the original source since there are 90 songs that original source could have, and if all of those leaked they would be fucked.

No GN'R album this year unless circumstances propel it. A mid 2015 release is looking likely

I know you have a reputation as being an insider so this is kinda disheartening if true sad Seems like neither Axl or the label cares to put out a GNR album anytime soon, and given the state of the music industry I can't say I really blame either of them.

Axl's probably making more money from touring than he would from an album release, and the label are happy to not put out an album just so as to keep Axl under contract awaiting their not in this lifetime reunion album.

I'd be as happy as a pig in shit if I could just pay $0.99, just once, and legally download just one new song from GN'R 16 At least we know Guns might play 2-3 new songs on their next tour, but I'm expecting only 2 songs - Going Down and acoustic Better - and they're not new if you're a downloading motherfucker like me (and the rest of the Evo/MSL/MyGNR/HTGTH members!)

I've got my fingers crossed that Izzy puts out an album this year, seems to make the years waiting for GNR releases a little easier, for me anyway izzy

There are a lot of good bands out there, you just need to know where to find it.  Indie bands are the way to go right now there are a ton of good indie bands. Check out bands like the birthday massacre, the royal concept, foster the people, and of monsters and men to get you started.

Guns n roses are dead, All the talent of the current band has already left with Finck, Buckethead and even brain.

The band should just release the CD era stuff with BH and Robin the write a new album with the current lineup.  NO one wants to hear songs that were written in 98-2002 redone by the current band.

And the stuff this current band would write is going to be shit anyways.  I know I don't to to her the generic crap that DJ and Ron come up with

#567 Re: Guns N' Roses » Leaked GN'R Songs Thread » 618 weeks ago

There was a time acoustic would only be cool if it was BH. If it was Ron, who cares.

I want BH and Finck ERa songs, before RON and DJ ever touched them.

Silkworms fan remix?  Fan remix or not, I like this a lot.  The person that did the remix did a great job esp theway they did Axls voice.

would have been a better fake if they didnt lift the outro from Adagio in D minor
