Great topic indeed. Interesting version!
There is more...

Just look at Silkworms..thanks to the Bumblefoot version we know the structure had been changed before Slash & Duff came on board. And the same thing could have happened with Hard Skool. Maybe the section after the first chorus that was new to us now wasn't something Slash & Duff brought to the table, but was already there with Robin/Bucket or at least with Bumble/DJ... Also in terms of complete vocal tracks, I think we're down to Atlas and Perhaps. By putting vocals on some of the other tracks the song structures could easily have been rearranged by 2004/2006/2008
I think the drums may be a giveaway on whether the arrangement is new or not.
On Hard Skool, even though the structure hasn't changed radically compared to the Village demo, the arrangement is quite different, so they couldn't have kept Josh Freese's drums. And the fact that they didn't use Brain's drum track from a presumed post-Village version either (like they did on Absurd), indicates that the arrangement of the Slash/Duff version is new.
Good call! That could indeed be a major hint..

But I'm glad we're getting the left over tracks with Slash and Duff...but it does sound like the plan is they just mute the original bass/guitar lines and over dub slash - which is a shame cos songs like Atlas and so on would be awesome but need a rearrangement IMO.
I agree, better this way than none of the stuff. Releasing it this way might also open the possibilities for a Chinese Boxset one day in 2050 with the original players...

…oh. They stuck a screen up at the start of KOHD.
Seriously guys? I mean, nice gesture. But if there's one thing I thought we could fairly guarantee, it's that the members of Guns N' Roses could cobble together a fucking Rolling Stones cover on the night.
Like, really. Just slap that graphic up on the screen and belt out Jumpin' Jack Flash or something. You all know how to play it.
Up to 15 min these days? If they keep touring and continue like this they could reach 30 min of KOHD in a couple of years...

Randall Flagg wrote:So does the release of Absurd "count" as "new music?" Just curious what the consensus is. My opinion is a rehashed song played live in 2001 before being canned doesn't, but that's just my opinion.
Have we really reached the point where GN'R put out an actual new song, and people are splitting hairs over whether it constitutes a new song?
Most definitely yes. It's a new release alright, but not a new song, as it was played live 20 years ago. If they release 'Goodnight Tonight' or 'It Taste Good', they wouldn't really be considered new either, would they?

I love that 2 min Intro thing. Who knows where they have taken it or what else might have become of it...

I hope this single does ok though. I want this band to be successful now so we get more new music. Last thing we need is this single failing and the band going into a 20 year reboot mode.
If they were truly aiming for success they should have chosen a different song. Hard School or Perhaps. The general public and the casual concert attendees who want to hear SCOM and NR won't dig this track. The song won't get any radio airplay with these lyrics.
Don't get me wrong, I like the song and I'm glad they finally put something out, but they surely can't expect it to be the next Paradise City or Jungle...
They should call the album Not In This Lifetime, cuz this being the first single with Duff and Slash back in the band is a bigger surprise than the reunion tour itself. It's literally the most absurd thing they could have done for a release..

I've done a full 180 on it - underwhelmed at first but now loving it on all levels. The band are kicking ten tonnes of ass on this.
Surely that is Duff and only Duff? Frank is as replaceable as a session muso, but surely Duff as a founding member and one of the "big 3" insisted he play the bass parts?
You hear a bass riff melody on its own at a certain part of the song, but I can’t differentiate if that’s him from Stinson. Doesn’t necessarily have the signature Duff chorus bass sound. But I could be mistaken…
Well I guess there is no way to be 100% sure, but since that bass part is new in comparison to the Bumblefoot version it's most definitely Duff.

I think the surprise release is great news! The song choice is highly 'absurd' though. While I'm happy Axl hasn't let go of his vision of the rest of the CD sessions, they would have had "safer" choices in order to create a positive buzz. Oklahoma, Quick Song, D-Tune, well even Hard School. Maybe they chose 'Absurd' because it's the one song where Axl knows he can sing properly live? It wouldn't look good if they put out a new song and Axl can't sing it.
With it being an alternate in the set, just as Hard School, maybe it however also was unplanned and actually happened by chance. Literally a cointoss between the two. Maybe they decided to put out the mp3 only after they noticed that the press were picking up on them playing a new song. That might also explain the sloppy artwork for the single, if it was put together in a hurry.
It's interesting that they haven't changed the song that much from the last leak. It's basically the same just better guitars than what BBF had to offer. Personally I still prefer the 01 version with the other intro and the longer bridge, but it's fine.
What it also shows us that literally nothing is off the table for an album.
Just imagine...
