I can't wait to hear the Blu-Ray audio ...
... as isolated tracks when they become lossless FLAC leaks!
(See what I did there?)

Very interesting. I tried to isolate the voices using the audio program Audacity, but that only removed the dialogue and left the music!

Axl was right that Guns needed to do something outrageously ambitious to be seen as moving beyond its initial success. Lies was a placeholder, a way to buy the band some time between albums. The practice really dates back to the 1960s, with the "extended play" records of about four songs that The Beatles and others would release. U2 used to do the same things with mini-albums like Under a Blood Red Sky and Wide Awake in America (They should probably get back to doing that again). It gives fans something to enjoy so they don't forget about a group.
A single GNR LP would have been compared against Appetite and inevitably (unfairly) been written off as weaker by comparison, even though they're very different projects by a band at very different stages in its career. Releasing two CDs took that argument off the table. All the music press, and mainstream press, could talk about at the time was the audacity of the band to release such a huge project.
It also made them seem like songwriting machines, able to crank out tons of material. That, too, boosted the group's reputation, and by extension it defused a lot of frustration that had built up during the years of waiting for UYI to finally come out after repeated missed deadlines and broken promises in interviews with Slash and company. The sheer volume of music justified the delay.
I agree that a single disc would have been stronger (I usually listen to a mix CD of my favorite UYI tracks rather than the whole thing) but it's like Paul McCartney says about The Beatles' White Album: "Sure it's too long and at times it's strange, but come on: It's The Beatles' White Album!"

It's interesting to compare the "Casualties of War" speech as it appears in the movie vs. how it appears in "Madagascar."
In the film, music plays behind Michael J. Fox as he speaks:
However, in "Madagascar," all we hear is his voice.
Did Axl reach out to the movie producers for the original recording? Is it just a bit of studio wizardry through which he extracted the dialogue?
I was always impressed by the detail in this post from 2006, outlining exactly where the quotes come from, two years before the album came out: http://www.mygnrforum.com/topic/69170-m … nt-1247883
I first got to hear this song live in 2002 and it never grows old!

He's supposedly doing a followup interview with the same podcast.
That's great news!
Considering his health issues, it'd be nice if Axl does release the ChiDem box set so many of us are hoping for. The pride of having his unheard music released, and the extra income, are both sure to help Bucket.

I hope to save up money for it before the end of the year. God willing, it will be on sale with a big discount before then!
If he has no intention of recording with Slash and Duff and no designs on doing a solo record he should just dump the Chinese Democracy Vault. Every last thing of it.
Agreed!

in my opinion, there's not much left for UYI to be included in some kind of box set. AFD era had MASSIVE amount of recorded demos, various takes... UYI had nothing like this - the tracks were mostly recorded in one take, with only various small tidbits added later. and INSANE amount of DAT tapes existed later during the mixing process. I don't think the boxset would be interesting, if it included X various mixes of the very same take of most tracks.
Wow. It says a lot about how prepared they were to record the album.
That being the case, maybe what we should hope for is a Rockband game release of UYI, with multitracks of each person's contribution.

Best of all worlds: New GNR music with Duff and Slash.
My preference between new GNR music with Pitman in the band vs. a nostalgia tour that adds nothing to the band's songbook: Pitman!
Axl's a frigging genius, and to have him just do the same songs over and over is like Einstein writing "E=MC2" on a chalkboard a thousand times. We need another album from the man, regardless of which musicians are the ones to bring it out of him.
Regarding Fleetwood Mac, my wife and I saw them with the original five members a few years back. Really good show, and they played for a long time. The basic core of the band is still Mick and John. Without them, it's not Fleetwood Mac whether on a name level or musical heritage. Stevie, Christine, and Lindsay seem to rotate in and out every few years!
If they ever do a final tour I hope it will be a true career retrospective going back to the Peter Green era.

I keep thinking about the podcast interview, and what an amazing guy he's turned out to be. As much as the Buckethead mystery has been fun to participate in as a fan, I'm hopeful that he'll do more interviews in the future to let us know about himself, and his music. With no exaggeration intended it's easy to believe that his work will be studied a century from now, like people study Beethoven or Mozart today. He's that innovative.
What a brilliant performer.

zombux, this is exceptionally great work. Immensely helpful. I'll be spending quite a bit of time going over this item by item. it's also a great reminder of the kinds of treats we may be in for, if a UYI box set is released. Thanks a lot!
I had no idea the two Ashba tracks ("Mi Amour," "Ballad of Death") had leaked. Has anyone found them online? I looked, without success.
