I can't believe some of the posts I'm reading.  Axl and Robin have grown together?  Doing what?

On-stage chemistry.

Frontman and lead guitarist are pretty vital members in a band like GNR. Both had been uneven before the '06 tour.

I thought Bucket was unreplaceable. He was replaced on stage, while he's still featured on the record. Ironically, Robin would turn out to be even harder to replace.

How would that work out PR wise uh? You release an album as a band but your main guitar player is busy playing for another band? To me that sounds like asking for trouble with the media in all aspects. And Axl needs all the positive PR he can get. It doesnt look good when your main guitar guy is off somewhere playing for Nince Inch Nails.

Oh yeah, this is so new.

'94-95: Robin in NIN
'97-99: Robin in GNR
'99-00: Robin in NIN
'00-08: Robin in GNR
   '08-: Robin in NIN

For one, NIN is respectable band, even moreso in the media due to TR's hatred towards major record labels and his unorthodox record release and distribution tactics. Everybody knows TR = NIN, so playing in the live band is a separate issue of being in the studio outfit. Just goes to show that Robin's a qualified performer capable of playing alongside Reznor. Trust me, Robin doing a NIN gig ísn't exactly bad publicity. If anything, he should now be able to continue forging a more distinct identity as a player.

Particularly in early '01, he was visibly still in the 'NIN phase', which isn't exactly a surprise given his renewed stint in the band. On the other hand, GNR had people with either a very distinct and defined visual outlook from the getgo (Buckethead), a more unassuming yet equally self-confident one (Tommy, et al) and lastly, a terribly undecided one. Without a frontman acting as a centerpiece and pulling the act together into a cohesive unit, everybody else is free (and perhaps even expected) to explore their own tastes and come out with something that might strike a chord with the audience. Not really that different from the way the record itself has been worked on for several years.

People like Tommy and Bucket knew what worked for them and didn't bother fixing what wasn't broke, but Axl and Robin were a pair of chameleons in '01-02. Sometimes they looked fascinating, other times horrible. At times just plain weird. In '06, both Robin and Axl took their places in the band without hesitation, not standing out as the freakish frontman and gothic guitarist but as the two key members of a solid band.

Now Robin looks like he's taken his GNR look, shaved a little facial hair and taken it to NIN. The funny thing is, I wouldn't mind if he'd look like that in GNR. Axl and Robin have grown so together in the past years, I personally think it's a great opportunity for both to have Robin check out the NIN camp again, pick up some new tricks and try out his wings as someone who has a chance to challenge Trent as far as stage presence goes, and then come back to Axl at least one more step away from all those Slash comparisons.

Get Baz, blow the dust off those songs written with Izzy before Scott came aboard, have Izzy write the lyrics and release it as the third studio album. It'd actually give a good idea what the UYI-lineup might sound today, given we'd be lacking some of Axl's characteristics. But I would like the idea of Baz doing Izzy/VR songs, some GNR covers and Scott's material like Messages.

Milk every other GNR connection to death and the record sales will be boosted by the prospect of a pseudo-reunion.

Since when has a lead guitar player left GNR without any comment?

Slash left in '96, Axl sent a fax to MTV.

Robin left in '99, Axl spoke about the matter within three months to Kurt Loder. A label spokesperson also commented the matter the minute Robin's departure became official.

Bucket left in '04, in a matter of weeks Axl sent out an open letter on the subject.

If Robin has left for good, someone will eventually take a stand on the matter. Robin himself realizes his own situation and appreciates the fact that the GNR fanbase as a whole is a bunch of anxious motherfuckers (face it, we are). I trust he'll be personally commenting the situation as it develops, as he's a stand-up guy, he did it before with the RIR4 cancellation, for example.

I understand that you want to remain positive and maybe you are right. But it is doubtful that Reznor would hire Finck for just one leg of a world tour.
Obviously at this point it's all about speculation, that's why NIN fans are already hoping that NIN with Finck will play in Europe in 2009...

I do want to see Finck with NIN in Europe. 19

However, this may also be a temporary solution for Trent. While wrapping up the tour last year, he spoke about exploring new avenues for the live shows.

"The idea of five guys playing loud music two hours, while it's the culmination of fine tuning over a lot of years, has got to change once finances come into play, especially performing in markets outside of the mainland U.S. I want to whittle things down." - Starbulletin

By now, there was supposed to be a new lineup or a "new configuration" for NIN Live. Instead, Jeordie White return to Manson after getting fed up with Trent (now that's a first) and Aaron North was replaced by Robin. Otherwise, the live band remains the same. Trent toured the US last in late '06, six months before the release of Year Zero. Therefore, I'm sort of worried that Trent postponed the final kiss-off of a traditional five-piece live band in order to do one more US tour, a one final hurrah with Robin, his dearest lead guitarist.

NIN may go on to Europe in '09, but I'm not all that certain who'll go with Trent and what sort of a performance it'll be.

Interesting that this is the 2nd time this has happened with Robin.  I would think he'd have to have Axl's ok to do it, which means IF CD is coming out, it isn't going to be anytime soon.

It almost happened with the With Teeth tour. It's a well-known fact in the NIN community that Robin was still Trent's first choice for the lead and he could've done a years worth of touring, completing three whole legs and still managed to come back to GNR with over a months time to rest & rehearse. Trent has told people Robin did consider quite carefully before giving it a pass. Trent felt pretty much the same way Axl felt in '99, which should tell you something about Robin.

While I'm not negative nor frightened about the current situation, I'll be the first one to point out what I call the curse of Paul Huge.

'01: The RIR3 lineup becomes the first 'new era' live band.

'02: Paul Huge quits.

'04: Bucket quits.

'06: Brain quits.

'08: Robin... goes out to tour with NIN. big_smile

What currently remains of the RIR3 lineup is Axl, Tommy, Dizzy and Pittman, which is kind of mind-boggling, if you think about it. Here's hoping that the CD release could revert the curse and give us back the 2001 lineup with a bunch of new songs.

Currently, one can assume Robin will do the first leg, which runs from late July to early September. It's April now and it takes 2-3 months to properly set up an album release. Since no announcement has been made (as I'd expect one would be made fairly soon), Axl and Universal are still in talks. This means CD is in mid-June/mid-July territory at the earliest. A silly moment for Robin to walk away from a decade's work unless he'd gotten the OK.

Remember Tommy during the VGH tour? He kept saying he might on the road when CD comes out, which would've suited him just fine. After returning to the fold, he expected GNR to embark on a long tour to promote the album.

CD may now be already pencilled for November at the earliest but that's alright. If the movement goes on, we're in for an interesting year, albeit with no touring.

Honestly, I thinkt his is great. Aaron North shit all over the NIN catalogue and this is really Robin's thing. He is the undisputed best lead guitarist for NIN ever. If Trent is sober, and Robin's on stage with him, it'll be one hell of a show. Can't fucking wait. I HAVE to go to Toronto for this.

Werd.

Robin's the man when NIN Live is concerned. I really would've wanted to see him last year alongside Trent, Josh Freese and Jeordie White (now happily back with Manson - funny how certain groups begin to be reunited). Instead I got Aaron, who didn't kill the mood but didn't exactly "piss on Robin's shoes" either, no matter what Trent tried to tell us back in the day.

Been listening to Ghosts I-IV recently, and some guitar parts ring so much like Robin, it was eerie to read he's now back with Trent. I hope Robin makes it to Europe with NIN, as I so want to see him back in the saddle and blazing March of the Pigs.

Really, if I sound like I'm none too shocked, I'm not. Robin could've patched up with Trent and done some touring without compromising GNR a long time ago. Now, Trent's released his most exciting album since The Downward Spiral and I really feel like Saikin observing the recent VR melodrama.

I love Robin, regardless which band he's in. However, I seriously doubt he would've copped out on Axl this late in the game, having stood by him through thick n' thin. Axl and his management obviously knew about the situation beforehand, as Robin's a contract player. Either he let the renewal option lapse in favor of Trent or all parties worked an agreement for Robin to have the best of both worlds.

I'd wait for a comment from Irving Azoff before jumping into too drastic conclusions. Come ol' boy, this is your first on GNR damage control! Show some of that professionalism!

3. The refrence to Sebastian. I assume this is supossed to imply that they are stuck in the 80s and retro and old and whatever else.

Maybe, but the word back in '03 was that the choice on the VR frontman ultimately came down to Scott and Baz, so I'm thinking that's what Scott might've alluded to.

Also, I found this to be rather funny in the light of recent events. Remember, this was before Rock Star: INXS was even shot.

"So you wanna be a rock & roll and TV star? The former members of Guns n' Roses might just have a job for you. Guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, drummer Matt Sorum and newcomer guitarist Dave Cushner are holding tryouts in Los Angeles to replace Axl Rose -- who splintered the original combo in the Nineties -- and VH1 is filming the proceedings for a new show.

"I was on my way to rehearsal and thinking about all these reality shows," says Slash. "I thought, 'You know what would be fucking cool? To show a band as it goes through all this bullshit.'" The band had placed ads in everything from local circulars to Rolling Stone, reading, according to Slash, "Unnamed artist looking for singer-songwriter somewhere in the realm of early Alice Cooper/Steve Tyler, the harder-edged side of McCartney and Lennon."

"We were getting between 200 and 300 CDs a week," Slash says. "We listened to every single one of them. You have to, because you never know. That one that you throw away could be the shit." In all, more than 500 singers sent demos, and the band has so far auditioned about fifteen of them. Only one finalist, former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach, knew the band beforehand, but he doesn't necessarily have the inside track. "He's busy on Broadway, isn't he?" jokes Sorum. "Seriously, we haven't found the one yet."

"I absolutely love [Sebastian]," says McKagan. "He's amazing, but we've just got to be really careful with who's going to front this thing."" - RS, 02/16/03

#630 Guns N' Roses » Small CD mention by Sean Beavan (from '06) » 899 weeks ago

From a time when there were too much GNR activity to notice this:

NINa: The newest album of Guns n' Roses titled "Chinese Democracy" is supposed to be released this year. What made you decide to work with Axl and the band?

Sean Beavan: My friend Billy Howerdel (Guitarist of Perfect Circle) was Axl's guitar tech and he and Robin Finck (NIN, GNR) approached me about producing Axl's record. They were great friends and it was good to work with them. I also met Tommy Stinson there (Replacements and GNR bassist) and we became great friends.

- Fabryka, 08/15/06

Beavan doesn't seem to have that many horror stories. Robin had had hands-on experiences with Beavan before, as he'd served as NIN's Front of House engineer. Still, kind of funny that a guitar player and a guitar tech are the ones contacting a producer in Axl's dream project. Does make it sound like Axl was getting anxious in landing a producer after Moby and Youth both stepped out.
