Luck - tv series
Cancelled after just 1 season ten years ago. I think this is the last great show to come out of HBO. Cast is fantastic, directing top notch and writing almost as good as Deadwood. Final episode is a pinnacle of television. Horse race is brilliant, just incredibly well shot and edited.
This type of quality does not exist in tv anymore far as I know. In movies you may get it from the few old time directors like Scorsese and Scott, but those guys are past their best now.

Yes I'd almost forgot about that movie but I remember it was good. I can't imagine Hollywood didn't want him for projects and for whatever reason he didn't do much of that at all. Part of the appeal with a Clint Eastwood movie, they always feel a tad different from the big studio productions yet delivers a similar level of brilliance you don't find in most independent efforts.
I guess it makes sense for a guy like Clint to be turned off by the Hollywood environment but I don't know if that's the reason he kept away from it. Maybe he just wanted to do his own thing.

The great rocker was probably Better and that was exactly the disc that leaked in 06 I'm guessing?

Just saw Unhinged.
Russel is another one of my favorite actors. Always had massive respect for both his movie star persona and his acting skills. Obviously I didn't expect to see anything ground breaking in a movie like this but the dude kinda impresses me here. He sells the role completely and I'm left wondering who else in Hollywood could pull this off? Most of the hot shot actors today can forget about it. Leo couldn't do it, maybe. Bale even less so. Tom Cruise? Nah, he would channel is Collateral character I think.
As a movie though it is just okay. They really needed a strong name actress here to pull off all those intense emotional scenes. Emily Blunt would have been perfect. The script it pretty good, the director less so. Lack of directing talent these days in Hollywood. The ending was pretty terrible. You can't have a cliched happy ending in this movie because there's no way you can bring yourself to hate Russel Crowe. He's the reason you are watching the movie in the first place, because you want to see him. He's gotta win somehow.
Talking about Clint, do we know why he basically always did independent movies? He's the only major name in Hollywood I can think of that basically never did a Hollywood movie.

I saw The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent in the theater tonight. It was me and 2 other people in there so I don't think the box office is going to be great.
It was good to see Nic Cage in a real movie again but it was not more than okay. Apart from some mildly funny bits the movie dragged. Good performances, good cast and sort of a good idea but in the hands of the wrong script and a director not up for the task.
Thinking about it they could have made a very funny movie when they got Cage willing to lampoon himself. The guy is a meme and they did not manage to capitalize on it.

It was 2005 I'm pretty sure.
The fact they played a leaked gnr song on the radio and nobody fucking recorded it is mind boggling.

My friends dug the Better demo too.
Could have released it in summer 06 with Better, CD and The Blues as singles. 01 would have been even more favorable. Could have had a few albums with Buckethead then maybe an earlier reunion in the late noughties. Before they polished off all the edge CD was a good album, could have had decent success. Like VR did in 04-05. Still a market for hard hitting rock n roll then. So many wasted opportunities.

There's a new Russel Crowe documentary out. Looks to be quite good!
I'm going to watch the new Nicolas Cage movie tomorrow. He plays himself as a fading actor. For once my expectations are quite high.

Bruce Willis will always be one of my favorite actors. Seeing him old and frail is a depressing reminder where we are heading. On the other hand you can always put on a movie and enjoy these actors when they are young and bouncing. The unique charm of movies. Take you to another place and another time.
The Silence
This movie is a good example of taking you to another time. Probably the strongest aspect it has. Looking at the career of Scorsese he didn't write a lot of movies, but those he did write are the best. He did write this and while it isn't great it is alright. He really should have written more himself than failing so often with other peoples ideas.

Thelma is...good, but the feminist angle feels incredibly forced. Ridley has come a long way since then.
Funny, I think Tom Cruise is much more of a natural playing a bad guy than a hero. Matches his personality somehow. What ruins the movie for me is the ending which feels tacked on. After the two first daring acts we suddenly land in a cliched action finale and I think it's a wasted opportunity.
The Insider - to date the only movie I watched in the theater completely alone. It was just me and my father and 500 empty seats around us. Strange because this movie is just perfect. Everything is 10/10. Fantastic cast, great cinematography, music, writing. Perhaps Mann's best work. This type of movie just doesn't exist anymore.
